Abstract: An electrode assembly for an electrochemical cell that cycles lithium ions is provided. The electrode includes a current collector, a binder material layer disposed on or near a surface of the current collector, and an electroactive material layer disposed on or near a surface of the binder material layer that faces away from the current collector. The electroactive material layer includes a plurality of electroactive material particles having an average specific surface area greater than or equal to about 1 m2/g to less than or equal to about 30 m2/g, and average particle size greater than or equal to about 0.1 micrometer to less than or equal to about 10 micrometers.

Abstract: A system for authenticating communications from a vehicle to a remote assistance unit includes a connectivity module (CM) installed in the vehicle. A security device is adapted to transmit messages when the security device is within a predefined proximity of the CM. A security cloud unit is configured to validate the security device based in part on a first pair of complementary keys, including a first factory key stored by the security device and a second factory key stored by the security cloud unit. The first pair of complementary keys is configured for asymmetric encryption such that the first factory key is solely decryptable with the second factory key. The remote assistance unit is configured to authenticate an integrity of the CM based in part on a second pair of complementary keys which are dynamically generated by the security cloud unit.
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for controlling thermal conditioning of a battery system associated with brakes of a vehicle towing a trailer. In one embodiment, a method includes: determining, by a processor, that a temperature of the battery system is outside of a defined temperature range; determining, by the processor, a delta value between a brake request and a battery charge limit; generating, by the processor, a control signal to at least one of a heater and a compressor of the vehicle based on the delta value; generating, by the processor, a control signal to the battery system to initiate regeneration braking; and generating, by the processor, a braking reduction request to reduce braking by the trailer.

Abstract: Vehicles and related systems and methods are provided for controlling a vehicle in an autonomous operating mode. One method involves determining a current value for a range of view associated with a sensing device onboard the vehicle, determining a target value for the range of view based at least in part on a speed of the vehicle, and in response to determining the current value is less than the target value, determining a dropback adjustment distance based at least in part on a difference between target value for the range of view and an estimated distance to a closest in path (CIP) vehicle ahead of the vehicle within a current lane of travel, determining a longitudinal trajectory for the vehicle based at least in part on the dropback adjustment distance, and autonomously operating one or more actuators onboard the vehicle in accordance with the longitudinal trajectory.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides an electrolyte layer for use in an electrochemical cell that cycles lithium ions. The electrolyte layer includes a porous film that defines a plurality of voids and includes a plurality of solid-state electrolyte particles and a plurality of polymeric fibrils that connect the solid-state electrolyte particles. The electrolyte layer also includes a gel polymeric electrolyte that at least partially fills the plurality of voids in the porous film. The porous film has a thickness greater than or equal to about 2 micrometers to less than or equal to about 100 micrometers, and a porosity greater than or equal to about 10 vol. % to less than or equal to about 50 vol. %. The a gel polymeric electrolyte fills greater than or equal to about 0.1% to less than or equal to about 150% of a total porosity of the porous film.

Abstract: Methods and heat-treated cast aluminum alloy components for a vehicle formed from an aluminum alloy having high levels of recycled aluminum scrap are provided. The alloy may have, by mass, silicon at ?5% to ?11%, magnesium at ?0.5%, iron at ?0.2% to ?1.1%, copper at ?0.5%, zinc at ?0.5%, titanium at ?0.2%, chromium at ?0.02%, manganese at ?0.05%, strontium at ?200 ppm; an alloying element at ?50 ppm to ?500 ppm selected from the group consisting of: barium, lanthanum, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, and combinations thereof, and a balance aluminum. The heat-treated cast aluminum alloy component is substantially free of faceted iron-containing intermetallics having a platelet shape and at least one region has a yield strength of ?180 MPa and an elongation of ?7%.

The electrochemical cell includes a porous positive electrode that includes a positive electroactive material represented by: LiM1xM2yM3zM4(1-x-y-z)O2, where M1, M2, M3, and M4 are transition metals independently selected from the group consisting of: nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), aluminum (Al), iron (Fe), and combinations thereof, 0?x?1, 0?y?1, and 0?z?1. The electrochemical cell also includes a porous negative electrode physically separated from the positive electrode, and an electrolyte disposed in pores of the positive and negative electrodes. The electrolyte may include a lithium salt, an electrolyte additive having one or more alkene amide groups, and a solvent. The negative electrode can include a silicon-based negative electroactive material.

Abstract: A control system for a vehicle has a powertrain system that includes electric power propulsion system and a second propulsion system, a geographical position sensing system, a geographic map database, and a controller. The controller monitors a geographic location of the vehicle determine the geographic location of the vehicle in relation to a first predefined region and a first user-identified region. The powertrain system is controlled to generate propulsion power employing only the electric power propulsion system when the geographic location of the vehicle is within the first predefined region and when the geographic location of the vehicle is within the first user-identified region. The powertrain system is controlled to generate propulsion power employing the second propulsion system when the geographic location of the vehicle is outside the first predefined region and outside the first user-identified region.

Abstract: Thermal management in a vehicle involves a compressor to output a refrigerant in vapor form for circulation in a refrigerant loop. A thermal management system includes a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system in the refrigerant loop including an evaporator and an HVAC condenser, and an exterior condenser in the refrigerant loop configured to vent heat to an exterior of the vehicle. A first variable refrigerant flow valve controls a flow rate of the refrigerant output by the compressor into the HVAC condenser, and a second refrigerant flow valve controls a flow rate of the refrigerant output by the compressor into the exterior condenser. A controller controls the first refrigerant flow valve and the second refrigerant flow valve based on a target output temperature for the HVAC condenser.
