Abstract: Presented are intelligent vehicle control systems enabling external control of vehicles using visible or audible cues, methods for making/using such vehicle control systems, and motor vehicles equipped with such control systems. A method of controlling operation of a vehicle includes a vehicle controller receiving a trigger signal indicating the vehicle is in an automatic control trigger state and, responsive to receiving the trigger signal, activating an automatic control mode that enables an entity outside the vehicle to control the vehicle using visible and/or audible cues. The vehicle controller determines if an on-vehicle network of sensing devices detects a visible/audible cue from the external entity; if so, the controller responsively determines if the detected visible/audible cue is a preset valid command.

Abstract: A method for controlling an operator drowsiness alert system for a vehicle reacts to a sensed or calculated level of drowsiness of the vehicle operator. The method includes entering a first drowsiness alert state associated with a first operator drowsiness alert if the sensed or calculated level of drowsiness is above a first predetermined level for a first predetermined time, where the first predetermined time is greater than zero. Additionally, the method includes transitioning from the first drowsiness alert state to a second drowsiness alert state associated with a second operator drowsiness alert if the sensed or calculated level of drowsiness is above a second predetermined level for a second predetermined time, where the second predetermined time is greater than zero.

Abstract: Presented are control systems for operating dual-independent drive unit (DIDU) powertrains, methods for making/operating such systems, and electric-drive vehicles with fault management and mitigation for DIDU axles. A method of operating a motor vehicle with a DIDU axle includes monitoring first and second drive units (DU) that are independently operable to drive respective road wheels via respective axle shafts of the DIDU axle. A vehicle controller receives an indication of a fault condition in the first DU from a fault sensing module and responsively determines a fault type for the fault condition. The controller ascertains the vehicle's current speed and determines a respective torque limit for each of the DIDU drive units based on the fault type and current vehicle speed. Torque output of the first DU is concomitantly constrained to a first torque limit while torque output of the second DU is constrained to a second torque limit.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for controlling a drive system in a hybrid electric vehicle. In an exemplary embodiment, the drive system has combustion engine and an electric motor, and a method includes: obtaining, via one or more sensors, sensor data pertaining to the hybrid electric vehicle; determining, via a processor, whether cold start emission reduction is required, based on the sensor data; and providing an increase in torque provided by the electric motor, via instructions provided by the processor to the drive system, when it is determined that the cold start emission reduction is required.

Abstract: The present technology is directed to identifying road surface features and underground features using a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) sensor. The present technology may include activating the GPR sensor on a vehicle to transmit a pulsed electromagnetic signal toward a ground surface. The present technology may also include receiving the pulsed electromagnetic signal reflected from the road surface features and underground features by the GPR sensor. The present technology may also include filtering the pulsed electromagnetic signal to generate a shallow-GPR data or deep-GPR data, wherein the shallow-GPR data is used to identify the road surface features and the deep-GPR is used to identify the underground features. The present technology may also include adjusting operational parameters based on at least one of the road surface features and the underground features.
Abstract: The subject disclosure relates to techniques for enabling autonomous vehicles to reason about similarities of features between drivable areas. A process of the disclosed technology can include receiving first sensor data corresponding with a first roadway segment, receiving second sensor data corresponding with a second roadway segment, encoding the first sensor data into a first vector, wherein the first vector represents a first roadway characteristic associated with the first roadway segment, encoding the second sensor data into a second vector, wherein the second vector represents a second roadway characteristic associated with the second roadway segment, and determining a similarity between the first roadway segment and the second roadway segment based on the first vector and the second vector.
Abstract: A system and method of manufacturing an aluminum fuel cell cradle includes providing a negative cast mold having cavities to form the cradle and providing a feeding mechanism disposed about the mold and in fluid communication with the cavities thereof. The feeding mechanism includes a plurality of primary risers connected to and in fluid communication with cavities. The method further includes melting a first metallic material to define a molten metallic material, and moving the mold to a vertical casting orientation about a rotational axis, while feeding molten metallic material through the runner to the cavities, and cooling the molten metallic material to define a solidified metallic material. A second solidification time in the risers is greater than a first solidification time in the mold such that shrinkage of the solidified metallic material occurs in the risers away from the mold.

Abstract: A system for bandwidth saving for wireless cameras using motion vectors includes wireless cameras disposed within the vehicle, and capturing input image data. A control module, having a processor, memory, and input/output (I/O) ports, executes control logic stored in memory. A first control logic receives, real-time input image data from the cameras. A second control logic processes the input image data to maintain (Wi-Fi) bandwidth utilization within the vehicle below a predetermined threshold and maintains and maximizes real-time image data streaming quality through semantic segmentation and background memorization. A third control logic generates an output including background and foreground image portions. The output is transmitted to a human-machine interface (HMI) within the vehicle and periodically replaces the background portion with a cached background scene that is transmitted to the HMI.

Abstract: A first closed lane segment file including a first lane change histogram and a lane closure start point associated with a closed lane segment of a first lane of a road is received from a lane change data aggregation system at a lane change management system. The first lane change histogram includes a distribution of a plurality of lane change points received from vehicles that previously engaged in a lane change from the first lane to a second lane of the road in response to the closed lane segment. A lane change control point is determined based on the first lane change histogram at the lane change management system. A command is issued from the lane change management system to an ADS of the autonomous vehicle to initiate a lane change from the first lane to the second lane at the lane change control point.
