  • Patent number: 4171519
Abstract: A circuit breaker has a thermally sensitive bimetal connected across two lead-in wires in a glass envelope. An electrically conductive bypass element is in parallel with the bimetal and shorts it out. The bypass element can be removed from the circuit by melting it by means of a short duration pulse of high electric current. The bimetal contains means to prevent its ends from welding together should an arc occur when the bypass element is melted.

  • Patent number: 4170769
Abstract: An intrusion alarm circuit including a single electroacoustical transducer, such as a diaphragm-supported piezoelectric element, connected to an amplifier in a positive feedback loop configuration. The transducer functions as both a sound pickup and sound generator. When the ambient sound level exceeds a preselected threshold level, the resulting vibration of the transducer generates a voltage which activates the amplifier, whereupon the transducer vibrations are sustained and amplified in the manner of an oscillator, thereby producing an audible alarm.

  • Patent number: 4170784
Abstract: A circuit for enhancing the operation of a first voltage supply magnetically coupled to and derived from a second voltage supply. A signal source indicative of the voltage developed by the first supply is coupled to a detector. The detector operates to selectively couple a switchable momentary load across the second supply in response to outputs of the first supply below a desired value. The momentary load causes an additional incremental current to flow through an inductive element in the second supply and results in greater voltage induced in a winding of the first supply that is magnetically coupled to the inductive element.

  • Patent number: 4170763
Abstract: An improved conductively cooled laser pumping assembly comprises a metallic housing having an elliptically shaped bore in which a pump lamp and laser rod are supported along the respective focal axes of the bore. The laser rod is mounted on the tapered end of a conductively cooled metal body by resilient strap means at opposite ends of the rod and with a relatively low melting temperature solder between the body and the rod to enhance thermal contact with the rod and to accommodate the different thermal expansions of the rod and body, thereby minimizing rod strain. The elliptical bore is coated with a heat absorbing substance and contains a similarly shaped one-piece snugly fitting removable glass liner or shell.

  • Patent number: 4169259
Abstract: A switching circuit for energizing a load, such as fluorescent lamp ballasts, in response to a control signal of preselected frequency superimposed on AC power circuits which supply the load. A triac is gated to conduct the AC power to the load by a circuit including an impedance element and a series resonant LC network tuned to the frequency of the control signal. The gate circuit is arranged to block the control signal during all but a small portion of each half cycle of the applied AC power, thereby reducing the consumption of control signal power.

  • Patent number: 4169281
Abstract: A photoflash lamp array comprising a plurality of high-voltage type flashlamps mounted on a printed circuit board containing circuitry for sequentially igniting the flashlamps in response to successive high-voltage firing pulses applied thereto. The circuit board has an integral connector tab with a pair of terminals on one side connected to the igniting circuitry. Electrostatic protection is provided by a conductive shield of planar configuration disposed parallel to the circuit board and spaced therefrom on the side opposite that on which the lamps are disposed. The conductive shield is shaped with a portion thereof extending toward the end of the connector tab on the side opposite from the terminals to provide a discharge path for electrostatic charges in proximity to the tab. Preferably the shield extension is narrower than the tab and fits within a slotted recess therein between the tab and a back housing member.

  • Patent number: 4169237
Abstract: A high voltage movie light including a plastic holder, a pair of spaced-apart incandescent lamp units positioned within the holder, and means for electrically connecting the lamp units to an external power source. Each lamp unit comprises a formed glass reflector and a tungsten-halogen lamp located within the reflector and having a planar, dual filament structure therein. The lamp units are positioned within the holder such that the planes occupied by the respective dual filament structures intersect at a predetermined angle, e.g. 90 to 110 degrees, in order that the light output from each unit will be centered on a respective diagonal of the rectangular subject field being illuminated by the movie light. Each unit produces a bimodal intensity distribution, thus further assuring increased illumination levels on the subject field. An incandescent lamp unit suitable for use in the movie light is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4168122
Abstract: A light exposure device including an open-ended housing with trapezoidal side walls and a rectangular top wall contiguous therewith. The internal surface of the top wall and major portions of the internal surfaces of the side walls are light-diffusing while the remaining portions of the side wall internal surfaces are specular reflective. These surfaces are arranged such that the reflective surfaces direct light from the device's light source to the diffusing surfaces whereby only the diffused light passes through the housing's open end. A portable copier which utilizes the above device is also described.

  • Patent number: 4166232
Abstract: In the manufacture of a capsule for a sealed beam lamp or vehicle headlight, two coiled filaments on lead-in wires are supported in a holder with sufficient rigidity to accurately maintain a predetermined spacing between the filaments during a subsequent press sealing operation. The filaments are then inserted into an open-ended glass tube and the open end is press sealed onto the filament lead-in wires at the same time that wire supports are embedded in the press seal. The wire supports are then connected to mounting rods in the finished capsule.

  • Patent number: 4165143
Abstract: Means is provided for expeditiously securing a socket to the finned base of an electron tube. Upon seating the base in the socket, a discretely formed locking pin is positioned within a slanted bore traversing the end portion of a fin, whereby the terminal end of the pin abuts the surface of the socket thus effecting securement of the socket-to-base combination. The invention is particularly useful in electronic equipment wherein cathode ray tubes are employed.

  • Patent number: 4165469
Abstract: A pulsed solid state tunable laser comprises a Q-switched pump laser at kilohertz (kHz) pulse repetition frequencies and a non-centrosymmetric Raman crystal, such as lithium iodate (LiIO.sub.3), through which the pump beam is directed at an angle .theta. to the crystal optical axis. Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) occurs in the crystal to produce Stokes lines at substantial average output powers, which lines react with the pump signal in the nonlinear crystal at predetermined values of .theta. to generate second harmonics (SHG) and sum frequencies (SFG) of the pump and Stokes lines which constitute visible light outputs. Changing the value of .theta. by rotating the crystal, for example, permits the apparatus to be step-tuned to phasematch the signals and produce visible light outputs at a plurality of wavelengths.
