  • Patent number: 4265486
Abstract: Apparatus for the in-situ retorting of carbonaceous deposits includes a plurality of retorts connected to a common exhaust tunnel effectively free of broken shale into which products of the retorting are discharged. To allow simultaneous mining, rubblization and retorting of the in-situ retorts, the exhaust tunnel is provided with doorways between the retorts. Doors movable in the exhaust tunnel are adapted to seal against the doorways to prevent flow from retorts in which retorting is in progress to retorts under construction. A trench in the exhaust tunnel is provided for flow of liquid products produced in the retorting. A liquid seal under the doorways communicates with the trench to provide a passage for liquid flow past the doorways and to prevent upstream flow of gaseous products through the passage for the liquid flow.

  • Patent number: 4248585
Abstract: An igniter for a flare stack for waste gases is actuated periodically by an intermittently firing spark plug. A fuel gas for ignition aspirates combustion air through openings in a housing enclosing a supply line for the fuel gas. Flashback from the intermittent ignition of the fuel gas is prevented and noise is reduced by closure means responsive to the pressure differential between the interior of the housing and the ambient air. The closure means close the openings when the pressure within the housing is higher than the pressure of the ambient air.

  • Patent number: 4237081
Abstract: Apparatus useful in the manufacture of thermoplastic Olefin polymer fibrils are prepared by a process carried out in a disc mill. A hot olefin polymer solution is fed into the working cavity defined by the discs. In passing through the working cavity, the hot polymer solution is broken up into a plurality of uniaxially-oriented liquid streams which follow tortuous liquid paths through the working cavity whereby each of the streams is attenuated to orient the solute polymer molecules in said streams. A coolant liquid is fed into the working cavity and cools the attenuated polymer streams to a temperature sufficiently low so that substantially all of the solute polymer is precipitated in the form of uniaxially-oriented polymer fibrils. The product recovered from the modified disc mill consists of a mixture of uniaxially-oriented polymer fibrils, polymer solvent, and coolant liquid. The fibrils are recovered and refined in subsequent downstream operations.

  • Patent number: 4231617
Abstract: Shale oil is recovered from an underground oil shale deposit by in-situ retorting of rubblized shale in a retort formed in the deposit. Oil shale in a volume in the range of ten to fifty percent of the volume of the retort is mined from the deposit and delivered to the surface to provide void space for the expansion of the shale that occurs on rubblization to form the in-situ retort. The oil shale delivered to the surface is retorted at the surface. After completion of the in-situ retorting, boreholes are drilled downwardly through the retorted shale and a pipe lowered through the borehole to a level near the bottom of the retort. Spent shale from the surface retorting operation is slurried and pumped into the lower end of the in-situ retort. Pumping is continued to squeeze the slurry into the fissures between blocks of spent shale. The slurry is delivered into successively higher levels of the retort and the pumping and squeezing operation repeated at each level.

  • Patent number: 4230556
Abstract: In a coal liquefaction process the yield of liquid coal is increased with a concomitant decrease in the yield of normally solid dissolved coal by recycle of a product slurry containing mineral residue. In an integrated coal liquefaction-gasification process employing product slurry recycle wherein the net yield of normally solid dissolved coal from the liquefaction zone comprises the entire hydrocarbonaceous feed to the gasification zone, a moderate net yield of normally solid dissolved coal is conducive to an optimized efficiency for the integrated process. However, it is frequently difficult to perform the process at slurry recycle rates which are sufficiently low to be economically practicable because of a pumpability constraint on the solids level in the feed coal mixing vessel.

  • Patent number: 4227991
Abstract: In a coal liquefaction process including recycle to the liquefaction zone of a product slurry containing mineral residue, the minimum slurry recycle rate is determined by a pumpability constraint on the solids level of the slurry contained in the feed coal mixing vessel. If the solids level in the feed coal mixing vessel rises above the constraint level, the slurry recycle rate must increase. For coals which generate a high mineral residue content, adequate dilution of the slurry in the feed coal mixing vessel requires the slurry recycle rate to rise to an economically impracticable level. To avoid a high recycle rate the catalytic advantage of recycle solids is increased by reducing the median diameter of the particles in the recycle slurry stream by passing a portion of the product slurry through a hydroclone to produce a second recycle slurry comprising hydroclone overflow.
