  • Patent number: 7000425
Abstract: An air generation unit includes first and second air cycle machines (ACMs), each having first and second turbines. A manifold is arranged between the first and second ACMs and is in fluid communciation with each of the first and second turbines of the first and second ACMs. A condenser is arranged between the ACMs and is in fluid communication with the manifold. First and second valves are disposed within the manifold and control flow of air between the turbines and the condenser. An actuator is assembly is connected to the valves for moving the valves between a plurality of positions. The valves selectively close off or prevent the flow of air from the turbines of one of the ACMs in the event that the ACM is not needed or malfunctions.

  • Patent number: 6997100
Abstract: An impact plate for use in a component having parts that move at high velocity, such as a piston or valve, controls energy transfer during impact of the moving part. The impact plate has a recessed inner portion that acts as an impact surface and an outer support surface to hold the impact plate within a housing of the component. The impact surface has a selected, controlled spring rate so that it can deflect and absorb impact forces when the moving part contacts it.

  • Patent number: 6994738
Abstract: A snow filter for an airplane cabin air supply system is provided with a coned inlet screen which allows some air to pass through and some snow to be retained. The coned configuration diverts much of the air and snow toward a downstream conical retaining and collecting screen positioned toward the outlet of the snow filter. Snow is retained and collected at this point while air is able to pass through the screen. Downstream of the coned inlet screen and upstream of the conical retaining and collecting screen is an open air flow mid-portion that enables tortuous flow of air as the snow is directed toward the conical retaining and collecting screen in an annular collection volume. The outlet of the snow filter is provided with a contact sleeve that allows the snow filter to be fittingly received by a surrounding corresponding air duct. Thus a snow filter is provided that effectively separates snow from a flow of air while maintaining a clog-free path.

  • Patent number: 6982506
Abstract: A rotary electric machine assembly includes a stator and a shaft including a hollow core. Mounted onto the shaft is an inner-flanged band with an inner hub, a first flange and a first containment band. An outer-flanged band includes an outer hub that nests over the inner hub and defines a coolant passage therebetween. The outer-flanged band includes a second flange and a second containment band. A rotor core is disposed within a space between the first and second flanges. Coolant flowing through the coolant passage absorbs heat from the rotor core. The rotor core includes windings having end portions. The first and second containment flanges radially support the end portions of the windings.

  • Patent number: 6981844
Abstract: A propeller control generates a once per revolution (1P) blade thrust variation through cyclic pitch of rigidly mounted non-flapping propeller blades. The resultant shaft bending moment is used to provide aircraft attitude control. Axial translation of a pitch change assembly including a pitch change yoke along an axis of rotation drives a pitch link attached to each propeller blade to collectively change the propeller blade pitch angle. The pitch change yoke includes a translating pitch change yoke portion and an articulatable pitch change yoke portion. Deflection of the articulatable pitch change yoke portion changes the pitch change effect of each pitch link as a function of its angular position such that a sinusoidal pitch angle is superimposed on normal pitch angle. Cyclic pitch change actuators deflect the articulatable pitch change yoke portion in any angular direction while the linear deflection of the cyclic pitch change actuators generate the magnitude of the cyclic pitch.

  • Patent number: 6971607
Abstract: A mixer includes a fresh air tube defining a passage having an inlet receiving conditioned air from an air conditioning pack. The fresh air tube includes an outlet providing mixed air to a cabin of the aircraft. An outer tube at least partially surrounds the fresh air tube and receives recirculated air from the cabin. A circumferential corrugation in the fresh tube forms multiple lobes in the fresh air tube fluidly connect the outer tube to the fresh air tube. The warm recirculation air surrounds the portion of the fresh air tube to heat it preventing ice from forming. The warm recirculation air entering the fresh air tube through the lobes homogeneously mixes with the conditioned air from the pack to provide a uniform mixture of air within the fresh air tube, which further ensures the prevention of ice build up.

  • Patent number: 6971597
Abstract: A food processor for processing foodstuffs having a base housing, a motor, a drive shaft, a tool, a bowl, a lid and a tray. The tool is rotatably securable to the drive shaft and rotatable by the motor. The bowl is removably securable to the base housing and includes an inner surface area. The lid has an inner surface area. The lid is removably securable to the bowl to create a processing chamber between the inner surface areas of the bowl and lid in an assembled position. The tray is removably securable within the processing chamber and is manually rotatable relative to the bowl and lid, independently of the drive shaft and tool, in the assembled position.

  • Patent number: 6967461
Abstract: A system for enhancing the performance of a carrier insertion sensorless (CIS) position sensing system for a wound field synchronous machine that utilises the positively rotating components (+2?ct) of the carrier second harmonic currents that contain rotor position information before field excitation to serve as a north-south pole indicator that determines if the CIS system has locked onto the north or south pole of the rotor.

  • Patent number: 6957569
Abstract: A method of measuring the presence of oil in turbine bleed air that uses an aerosol sampler/size classifier to do a comparative measurement of the engine bleed air to the ambient air entering the engine on a real time basis by comparing quantity and size distribution of suspended particles of engine inlet air with suspended particles in the bleed air throughout the normal operating schedule of the engine and determining the presence of oil in the bleed air when the quantity and size distribution of suspended particles in the bleed air exceeds the quantity and size distribution of suspended particles in the engine inlet air by a predetermined amount.

  • Patent number: 6955053
Abstract: An annular combustor that has angled effusion holes through at least one surface of the combustor liner with the angle of the effusion holes oriented to cause the flow of air through the holes to facilitate swirling of the fuel and air within the combustor. The effusion holes thereby facilitate efficient cooling of the combustor liner combined with superior fuel/air mixing within the combustor.

  • Patent number: 6942183
Abstract: An air conditioning pack for an aircraft provides primary and secondary heat exchangers arranged in a ram air duct. A third heat exchanger is arranged in the ram air duct and is fluidily connected to the primary and secondary heat exchangers. The overall or combined size of the primary, secondary, and third heat exchangers is less than that of the typical primary and secondary heat exchangers of the prior art. A combination of heat exchangers is used to provide cooling during worst case scenarios enabling efficient use of the overall heat exchangers configuration to provide the desired cooling capacity.

  • Patent number: 6941760
Abstract: A start system for an expendable gas turbine engine includes a pressurized oxygen source and a pyroflare igniter. The pressure source communicates oxygen to a compressor through a first passage to spin-up a rotor and communicates oxygen to a combustor through a second passage to provide light-off oxygen for the atomized fuel within the combustor. A pressure regulator shuts off the impingement flow at a predetermined pressure and blow down of combustor flow continues for an enhancement period to assure continued operation of the gas turbine even at high altitudes.

  • Patent number: 6938504
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for evaluating a liquid dosing process in a container which is at least partially filled with a gas. According to the inventive method, a temporal course of at least one state variable p of a medium contained in said container is determined essentially over the entire duration of the dosing process. The temporal course (40; 40?) of the at least one state variable (p) is graphically or mathematically compared with a pre-determined state variable nominal range (42; 42?; 242) by means of a correlation method, and an evaluation result (S6, S14, S16) is obtained according to the results of the comparison.
