Abstract: Process of carbon fiber manufacture wherein the polyacrylonitrile precursor is stretched prior to oxidation step of the carbonization operation but after the stretching step of the spinning operation in limited temperature range. Process permits greater throughput in precursor manufacture and reduces flaws in the precursor because significant stretching is at lower line speeds typically used for oxidation and carbonization in making carbon fiber.

Abstract: A method for improving the properties of a metathesis polymerized cycloolefin article by treating with molecular halogen in an organic solvent. Degree of treatment can be regulated according to the swelling power of the solvent for the polymer. Improved properties include improved flame retardance, oxidation resistance and surface properties.
Abstract: A method is disclosed for preparing filled shaped articles of metathesis polymerized poly(cycloolefins) wherein an inorganic filler material is treated with a norbornene-substituted silane coupling agent. The norbornene moiety copolymerizes with the metathesis polymerizable monomer and the silane moiety creates a bond with the filler. Products are characterized by improved physical properties.

Abstract: A method of improving the paint adhesion properties of a cycloolefin polymer article comprising exposing the surface of said article to a solution of sodium hypochlorite or a solution of potassium permanganate. Preferably the solution is of sodium hypochlorite and it further contains a detergent solution.
Abstract: A stabilized synthetic polyolefin pulp-cellulose blend is prepared by adding 0.1-1.0% by weight of an antioxidant (a hindered phenolic and/or phosphite antioxidant) to a solution of a polyolefin and solvent wherein the antioxidant is homogenously dispersed therein, forming the polyolefin into a polyolefin pulp, and then mixing the polyolefin pulp with from about 55 to about 90% by weight of a wood pulp to produce the blend. This blend with improved higher ignition temperature is used in the absorbent products industry as an absorbent core, when the blend is heated sufficiently to melt the polyolefin.
Abstract: Rosin esters having improved viscosity stability are prepared by heating a mixture of rosin and a polyol in the presence of a catalyst mixture of 0.1% to 0.6% by weight calcium bis(ethyl 3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl phosphonate) and 0.02 to 1.0% by weight of a second calcium compound selected from calcium carbonate, calcium oxide and a calcium salt of an aliphatic carboxylic acid, all percentages being based on the weight of rosin.
Abstract: Novel thermoplastic compositions are provided comprising a blend of a polyindane resin and an engineering thermoplastic such as polyphenylene ethers, polysulfones, polycarbonates, polyether ether ketones, polyarylates, polyamides, polyimides and polyphenylene sulfides. Blends of thermoplastic block copolymers with polyindane resins are also provided. These blends provide improved processability with good physical properties including high impact strength and high heat distortion temperature.

Abstract: A container for storage of fruits or vegetables wherein the optimum environment, i.e., the optimum carbon dioxide to oxygen ratio, for the storage of said fruits or vegetable can be attained and maintained, thereby retarding maturation and spoilage thereof. The environment is controlled by providing a resin-coated nonwoven panel of limited carbon dioxide and oxygen permeability on an otherwise substantially impermeable container. The size of this panel is a function of its permeability, the amount and respiration rate of the contents, and the ratio of carbon dioxide of oxygen desired.
Abstract: A method for imparting and retaining hydrophilicity and liquid strike-through properties within an essentially hydrophobic polyolefin-containing nonwoven material and the corresponding fiber, fibrillated film, and nonwoven product thereof, whereby essentially hydrophobic polyolefin-containing fiber or film is topically treated with an effective amount of one or more of a water soluble polyalkoxylated polydimethylsiloxane, an alkoxylated ricinolein with certain fatty acids, or corresponding hydrogenated derivatives thereof.
Abstract: A metathesis polymerized cycloolefin article may be improved by treating with halogen halide in an organic solvent. Degree of treatment can be regulated according to the swelling power of the solvent for the polymer. Improved properties include improved flame retardance, oxidation resistance and surface properties.
Abstract: A filament winding system includes a head that selects the number of tows to be within a winding band while winding and positioning the winding band directly on the mandrel according to contours of the mandrel. Half of the tows are conveyed in an upper portion of the head and the remaining half are conveyed in a lower portion of the head with both halves meeting at an applicating roller at the discharge end of the tows. The head includes cut and add assemblies wherein the individual tows are selectively cut and later can be added to the band.

Abstract: An innerliner for tubeless tires is comprised of at least one non-elastomeric barrier layer such as poly(vinylidene chloride) or ethylene--vinyl alcohol copolymer film with each barrier layer sandwiched between two layers of an elastomeric material adhering to the rubber stock employed in the carcass of the tire. The innerliner has the advantage of imparting equal or better air retention properties to the tire with a substantial reduction in the thickness and weight relative to conventional halobutyl rubber innerliners.
Abstract: Rosin esters are used to reduce the tendency of shaped articles made from polypropylene, especially fibers, to form malodorous decomposition products upon sterilization by gamma-irradiation. Other stabilizers normally used to prevent discoloration and degradation of polyolefins may also be present. Stabilized fibers are used for the manufacture of disposable medical products.
