Abstract: A resin-modified fiber filter formulation, fiber filter element, and method for improving dimensional stability, firmness and resiliency of a polyolefin fiber filter element comprised of crimped polyolefin fiber tow, by contacting filaments thereof with a formulation comprising a blend of resin and base polymer emulsions as precursors forming the active formulation "in situ", at a convenient station by removing water, the solid resin component of which must have a low molecular weight and approved softening temperature range to obtain the desired characteristics.Typical resins are polyterpenes and hydrogenated rosin esters; typical base polymers are polyvinyl acetate and copolymers thereof with, e.g., ethylene or acrylates.
Abstract: Disclosed is a new class of polymeric hindered amine light stabilizers based on maleic anhydride modified polyolefins reacted with tetramethyl piperidine derivatives. These materials are more effective than most of the generally used hindered amine light stabilizers, but due to their higher molecular weights and the polyolefin backbone, they are more compatible with polyolefins.
Abstract: Disclosed is a novel process for producing water-soluble, cationic resins containing halohydrin functionality from basic polyaminopolyamides containing secondary amine functionality without the use of epihalohydrin. The process of this invention comprises reacting the basic polyaminopolyamide in aqueous medium with an allyl halide to form allyl substituents on tertiary nitrogen atoms, converting the allyl substituents to halohydrin moieties by reaction with hypohalous acid and then maintaining the resulting solution at a pH of at least 7.0 until the Gardner-Holdt viscosity of the solution at 24% solids and 25.degree. C. reaches at least B.
Abstract: A method of making a thermoset polydicyclopentadiene by first combining a plurality of reactant streams, one containing the activator of a metathesis-catalyst system, a second containing the catalyst of a metathesis-catalyst system and at least one containing dicylopentadiene; then immediately injecting this combination into a mold where polymerization results in the formation of a tough, rigid thermoset polymer with high modulus and excellent impact strength.

The invention utilizes a segmented mandrel which proceeds as a train of endwise joined segments through a composite tube forming machine. Segments are added to and subtracted from the mandrel during manufacture of the tubes.
Abstract: It has been found that excellent quality photopolymer printing plates having resistance to alcohol-based inks can be prepared by (a) spreading a photopolymer composition comprising a chain extended, liquid, terminally olefinically unsaturated polymer; from about 1% to about 50% by weight based on the weight of the polymer of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer; from about 0.1% to about 10% by weight based on the weight of the polymer of photoinitiator; and from about 0.01% to about 2% by weight based on the weight of the polymer of a stabilizer on a support to form a photopolymer element, (b) exposing to actinic light selected areas of said photopolymer composition on said support until substantial cross-linking takes place in the exposed areas without significant cross-linking in the unexposed areas, and (c) removing the unexposed areas of photopolymer composition by washing the plate with an aqueous detergent solution.
Abstract: Disclosed are novel wet strength resins for paper. The resins are produced by reacting an epihalohydrin, such as epichlorohydrin, with a polyaminopolyamide derived by reacting methylbisaminopropylamine with oxalic acid or mixture containing oxalic acid and one or more different saturated dicarboxylic acids or their esters.
Abstract: The froth flotation of ore and coal is significantly improved in recovery and grade of valuable minerals and coal when a depressant combination of an inorganic sulfite and the salts of certain sulfonated compounds are employed.
Abstract: A structural composite beam that extends along an arc is disclosed. The beam has a core in which web and flange portions are unitary and made by filament winding. A method is disclosed in which a plurality of these beams are made during a single layup, cure and cutting operation.
Abstract: Disclosed is a bonding resin composition composed of a blend consisting essentially of (a) maleic anhydride-modified, stereoregular polypropylene having a combined maleic anhydride content of about 0.5-0.8% by weight of said modified polypropylene, and (b) base polymer material at about 25 parts by weight per part by weight of said maleic anhydride-modified polypropylene. The base polymer material is selected from a group of two combinations. One combination consists essentially of stereoregular polypropylene and essentially crystalline, sequentially polymerized propylene-ethylene product having a combined ethylene content of about 25% by weight of the product. The weight ratio of the polypropylene to the product is about 1:3-3:1.
Abstract: A high impact strength, high modulus thermoset homopolymer is formed by the metathesis-catalyzed polymerization of dicyclopentadiene. In a preferred embodiment of the synthesis, two parts of a metathesis-catalyst system, a catalyst/monomer solution and an activator/monomer solution, are combined in the mixing head of a reaction injection molding machine and then injected into a mold. The reaction mixture sets up into a tough, rigid, thermoset polymer with high modulus and excellent impact strength.
Abstract: Non-asbestos elastomeric insulation materials for rocket motors are disclosed. The insulation materials comprise 100 parts by weight of a crosslinked elastomer polymer and between about 10 and 100 (preferably 15-75) parts by weight of an organic fiber selected from cotton flock, Sisal and a combination of cotton flock and Sisal.
