  • Patent number: 8339739
Abstract: A write head structure for use with thermally assisted recording is disclosed. Improved heat sinking is provided for removing thermal energy created by a ridge aperture near field light transducer. Metal films conduct heat away from the region near the ridge aperture to the high pressure air film at the ABS between the head and media. This heat is further dissipated by the media. The metal films have varying thickness to improve lateral conductivity and may be composed of Au combined with a harder metal such as Ru to improve wear characteristics at the ABS.

  • Patent number: 8338006
Abstract: A method for planarizing a magnetic recording disk that has surface features of elevated lands and recessed grooves includes forming two coatings of cured perfluorinated polyether (PFPE) polymers over the surface features. The disk may have a protective carbon overcoat with a surface that replicates the topography of lands and grooves. A liquid functionalized-PFPE is applied over the disk surface and then cured to form a first coating with the functionalized end groups bonding to the carbon overcoat. A liquid non-functionalized-PFPE polymer is then applied over the functionalized-PFPE coating and cured to form a second coating. The combined coatings substantially planarize the disk surface so that there is minimal recession between the top of the coating over the lands and the top of the coating over the grooves.

  • Patent number: 8338742
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for the calibration and use of test glide head gimbal assemblies are disclosed. Calibration is performed by pulse laser adjustment of the flexure mounted to the glide head, while the head is flying above a media test disk having asperities of known dimensions. • Publication number: 20120320473
Abstract: A magnetic sensor having a novel hard bias structure that provides reduced gap spacing for increased data density. The magnetic sensor includes a sensor stack with first and second sides formed on a magnetic shield. A thin insulation layer is formed over the sides of the sensor stack and over the bottom shield. An under-layer comprising Cu—O is formed over the insulation layer and a hard magnetic bias layer is formed over the under-layer. The use of Cu—O as the under-layer allows the under-layer to be made thinner while still maintaining excellent magnetic properties in the hard bias layers formed thereover. This reduced thickness of the under-layer allows the gap spacing (spacing between the top and bottom magnetic shields) to be reduced, which in turn provides increased data density.

  • Patent number: 8333898
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a magnetic tape head having a data sensor and a servo sensor. The data sensor and servo sensor are each separated from first and second magnetic shields by a non-magnetic gap layer, and the gap thickness for the servo sensor is larger than the gap thickness for the data sensor. The method involves depositing a first gap layer over shield structures, then depositing a second gap layer using a liftoff process to remove the second gap layer over the data sensor region. A plurality of sensor layers are then deposited, and a stripe height defining mask structure is formed over the data and servo sensor regions, the mask having a back edge that is configured to define a stripe height of the data and servo sensors. An ion milling is then performed to define the stripe height and to remove gap material from the field.

  • Patent number: 8335051
Abstract: A recording head having a narrowed track has a high recording magnetic field strength and a high recording magnetic field gradient has certain problems which may be difficult to overcome. In one embodiment, a magnetic film, which overhangs from a track width, is provided on a trailing side of a. region retracted from an ABS of a main pole facing a recording medium. Thereby, a magnetic field strength on the trailing side is increased so that a difference in distribution of magnetic field strength defined by a geometrical bevel angle given to the main pole is increased. Consequently, writing performance of the main pole is improved while forming a large magnetic clearance angle with respect to an adjacent track and suppresses writing into an adjacent track when skew occurs. Other systems and methods are also disclosed regarding a head with a high recording magnetic field using an overhanging magnetic film.
