  • Patent number: 8310789
Abstract: An integrated conductor/suspension structure for supporting and electrically connecting a write/read head in a hard disk drive and methods of making the conductor/suspension structure are provided. The integrated conductor/suspension structure may allow for an increased characteristic-impedance range, greater interference shielding and a reduction of signal loss that is contributed by a lossy conductive substrate. The suspension structure includes apertures formed therein that result in a reduction in the lossy material and its effect on the electrical signals. In addition, the conductor/suspension structure of the present invention provides shielding to reduce the interference from external electric fields.

  • Patent number: 8301948
Abstract: A method for adaptively applying an error-correcting code to a storage device is disclosed. A determination is made that a system is in an idle state of input/output requests. First data symbols are copied into a first location within a buffer. First data symbol errors corrected using a first error-correcting code. Second data symbols including corrected bits are written in a second location on the recording media with a second error-correcting code. An error number for the second data symbols in the second location is determined. If the error number is below a first threshold error number, the first data symbols are deleted. If the error number is above the first threshold error number, the second data symbols are deleted.

  • Patent number: 8300337
Abstract: A method for measuring change of clearance between a head and a disk. The method includes reading a preliminarily written data string for clearance measurement on a disk to obtain a first measured value corresponding to a clearance, and writing a new data string for deterioration check onto the disk and reading the data string for deterioration check to obtain a second measured value corresponding to the clearance. The method also includes determining a deterioration of the data string for clearance measurement from a difference between the first measured value and the second measured value, measuring a clearance change using the data string for clearance measurement by a normal operation if the determination is that the data string for clearance measurement has not deteriorated, and measuring a clearance change by an operation different from the normal operation if the determination is that the data string for clearance measurement has deteriorated.

  • Patent number: 8296930
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a magnetoresistive sensor that results in the sensor having a very flat top magnetic shield. The process involves depositing a plurality of sensor layers and then depositing a thin high density carbon CMP stop layer over the sensor layers and forming a mask over the CMP stop layer. An ion milling is performed to define the sensor. Then a thin insulating layer and magnetic hard bias layer are deposited. A chemical mechanical polishing is performed to remove the mask and a reactive ion etching is performed to remove the remaining carbon CMP stop layer. Because the CMP stop layer is very dense and hard, it can be made very thin. This means that when it is removed by reactive ion etching, there is very little notching over the sensor, thereby allowing the upper shield to be very thin.

  • Patent number: 8300360
Abstract: A compliant, flexible air bearing slider (ABS) reduces the contact forces between the slider and disk, thereby reducing excessive burnishing and wear and increasing the reliability of the slider. According to an embodiment, an ABS has at least one “compliance-enhancing feature” which reduces the bending mode vibration frequency of the slider. By causing the slider to flex, and bringing the bending mode vibration frequency closer to the pitch 2 eigenmode frequency, coupling of the different vibration modes can be obtained. Thus, the different vibration modes can effectively dampen each other and result in reduced contact forces between the slider and disk.

  • Patent number: 8300358
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention help to suppress broadening of a write field of a main pole of a perpendicular recording head and realize high-quality write operation. According to one embodiment, a main pole of a write head extends to an air bearing surface or a medium-facing surface and has an inverted trapezoid in cross-section. First soft magnetic films called side shields are separately disposed through a nonmagnetic film on both sides of the main pole. The air bearing surface side end of the first soft magnetic film is provided to recede from the air bearing surface. The first soft magnetic film and the main pole are formed in the same layer. A second soft magnetic film called a trailing shield is provided above the main pole on the air bearing surface side via a nonmagnetic film.

  • Publication number: 20120261640
Abstract: An electronic device employing a graphene layer as a charge carrier layer. The graphene layer is sandwiched between layers that are constructed of a material having a highly ordered crystalline structure and a high dielectric constant. The highly ordered crystalline structure of the layers surrounding the graphene layer has low density of charged defects that can lead to scattering of charge carriers in the graphene layer. The high dielectric constant of the layers surrounding the graphene layer also prevents charge carrier scattering by minimizing interaction between the charge carriers and the changed defects in the surrounding layers. An interracial layer constructed of a thin, non-polar, dielectric material can also be provided between the graphene layer and each of the highly ordered crystalline high dielectric constant layers to minimize charge carrier scattering in the graphene layer through remote interfacial phonons.

  • Patent number: 8289653
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling lubrication in hard disk drives. Hard disk drives often include lubrication on the disks to protect the disks from incidental contact with the head slider. Embodiments of the invention include lubrication control surfaces or dams on the air bearing surface (ABS) of the head slider. The dams redirect air flow on the ABS and/or redirects excess lubrication that migrates from the disk to the head slider. By redirecting excess lubrication, the lubrication control dams remove and/or store the lubrication and avoid failure that may occur as a result of the lubrication interfering with the ABS or the read/write elements of the head.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention help to provide a flying height adjusting type magnetic head slider with reduced influence of a heater coil induction field. According to one embodiment, a magnetic head slider comprises a heater, a read element, and a write element, which are formed on a substrate.
