Abstract: A method for central storage and retrieval of user passwords in a computer network is provided. The method comprises entering network user ID and password information into a central database, and registering each network application and its associated password with a LDAP server. When user ID and password data is received from an application login, the data is encrypted and sent to a secure layer to identify the register application. The data is then sent to the LDAP server where the user password is decrypted and the application's associated password is retrieved. The supplied password is then authenticated and a response is sent from the LDAP server back to the application indicating whether or not the authentication has been verified. Access to the application is granted only if the authentication is indeed verified.
Abstract: A method, system, apparatus, and computer program product are presented for management of a distributed data processing system. Resources within the distributed data processing system are dynamically discovered, and the discovered resources are adaptively monitored using the network management framework. A network or system administrator configures some mission critical endpoints with multiple network interface cards (NICs) and specifies mission critical endpoints, non-mission critical actions, etc. During status collection activities associated with network or system management activities, the categorization of an endpoint as a mission-critical or non-mission critical endpoint affects the manner in which the status collection activity is performed.
Abstract: An arrangement for adapting statistical parsers to new data using a mathematical transform, particularly a Markov transform. In particular, it is assumed that an initial statistical parser is available and a batch of new data is given. The initial model is mapped to a new model by a Markov matrix, each of whose rows sums to one. In the unsupervised setup, where “true” parses are missing, the transform matrix is obtained by maximizing the log likelihood of the parses of test data decoded using the model before adaptation. The proposed algorithm can be applied to supervised adaptation, as well.

Abstract: A method, apparatus and program for updating client computers with user specific application enablement are provided. The invention involves creating a component control file on a network server, which defines the actions to be performed to install an enablement component needed to run an application on a client and creating an installation control file which contains a list of the enablement components needed to run the set of applications that have been assigned to a user. The enablement components are changes to the operating system's configuration. When a user logs onto a client computer, a mechanism in the client reads the user's installation control file from the server and then installs the necessary enablement components on the client operating system, if those components are not already installed. In one embodiment, the user receives a prompt before the components are installed, in case the user does not want to use the entire set of assigned applications.

Abstract: A method for characterizing average performance in a data processing system is provided. This method consists of adding meta-tool level variables to a verification tool. These meta-tool variables keep track, at once, of all concurrent streams of execution that the tool is considering in its reachability analysis. The image of an initial state variable is found and then divided into a frontier of new states and a set of previously reached states. The previously reached states are ignored and the image of the frontier is found. This process continues until the frontier is empty and all possible states have been reached. In one embodiment of the present invention, the probabilities of the paths can be considered by sampling and holding input data using SMV (a model checking tool) variables.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods for managing temporal parameters of computer programs to enhance the accessibility of the computer programs to disabled persons are provided. The apparatus and methods provide a mechanism by which computer program data is analyzed to determine the presence of predefined temporal parameters. When the predefined temporal parameters are encountered during the analysis, the values for the temporal parameters are modified based on a user profile. The modified temporal parameters provide a different temporal output for the computer program data from that of the original computer program data. In this way, the temporal output of the computer program data is adjusted to take into consideration the cognitive disabilities of the user.

Abstract: An apparatus for cooling selected elements within an integrated circuit, such as active transistors or passive circuit elements used in a radio frequency integrated circuit is provided. In one embodiment, the cooling apparatus includes a cold plate thermally coupled to the region proximate the integrated circuit element, a thermoelectric cooler thermally coupled to the cold plate; and a hot plate thermally coupled to the thermoelectric cooler. Heat is removed from the integrated circuit element through the cold plate and transmitted to the hot plate through the thermoelectric cooler. In one form, the hot plate is located or coupled to an exterior surface of an integrated circuit, such that heat transmitted to the ambient from the integrated circuit element is dissipated into the atmosphere surrounding the integrated circuit. In another form, the hot plate is embedded in the integrated circuit substrate to locally cool elements of the integrated circuit while dumping the heat into the substrate.
Abstract: A thermoelectric device with improved efficiency is provided. In one embodiment, the thermoelectric device includes an electrical conductor thermally coupled to a cold plate and a thermoelement electrically coupled to the electrical conductor. The thermoelement is constructed from a thermoelectric material and has a plurality of tips through which the thermoelement is electrically coupled to the electrical conductor. The thermoelectric tips provide a low resistive connection while minimizing thermal conduction between the electrical conductor and the thermoelement.

Abstract: An image display apparatus with a display device for displaying images and a viewing device for viewing an image in the left eye and a different image in the right eye. Two smaller images, a left image and a right image, are created from the same two-dimensional image. The left image includes, as it''s left most part, the left most part of the two-dimensional image, the right image includes, as it''s right most, the right most part of the image two-dimensional image, and both the left and right images include a common central part of the full image. When the left and right images are displayed such that the left eye sees one image and the right eye sees the other image, the viewer sees the two-dimensional image as a virtual image that can be wider than the viewable width of the display device. The width of the virtual image can be varied to accommodate the viewer.

Abstract: To address the requirements described above, the present invention discloses a method, apparatus, article of manufacture, and a locking structure for supporting parity protected RAID in a clustered environment. When updating parity, the parity is locked so that other nodes cannot access or modify the parity. Accordingly, the parity is locked, read, generated, written, and unlocked by a node. An enhanced protocol may combine the lock and read functions and the write and unlock functions. Further, the SCSI RESERVE and RELEASE commands may be utilized to lock/unlock the parity data. By locking the parity in this manner, overhead is minimized and does not increase as the number of nodes increases.

Abstract: Phase selection mechanisms for the optimal sampling of data at the receiving end of a SSC interface. The receiver is allowed to choose between several phases of its local clock, to best synchronize the transmitter data to the receiver clock domain. It results in a minimum depth first in first out (FIFO) register to accomplish the handoff of transmit data from the transmit clock to the receive dock. It avoids the requirement of a delay locked loop (DLL) to bring the transmitter clock into a desired phase relationship with respect to the receiver clock. At least one embodiment of the present invention provides a solution specific to the DDR or full rate clocking SSC interface.

Abstract: A method, system, and computer program for updating firmware in a data processing system as a background operation allowing a user to utilize the computer for other purposes during the update process is provided. In one embodiment, after an operating system has been loaded and control has been transferred from the service processor to the host, the service processor determines whether the level of a firmware copy on a system component, such as an SPCN card, matches the current level of firmware stored on a non-volatile memory accessible to the service processor. If the level of the firmware copy in the component is different from the current level, the service processor transfers the current level of firmware from the non-volatile memory accessible to the service processor to the system component.
