Abstract: A slide cartridge for use with a chemical analyzer includes an upper ring and a lower ring secured together but rotatable with respect to each other. The upper and lower rings define a plurality of reaction chambers between them, which receive dry analyte test slides. A gear track formed in the underside of the lower ring engages a pinion gear attached to a stepping motor of the chemical analyzer in order to rotate the slide cartridge. The slide cartridge is rotated under a sample fluid metering device, which deposits a sample fluid on the test slides through a plurality of spotter ports formed in the upper ring, and above a reflectometer, which performs a colorimetric measurement on the spotted test slides through viewing windows formed in the lower ring of the slide cartridge. A chemical analyzer with which the slide cartridge may be used includes a reflectometer, a sample fluid metering device and a stepping motor for rotating the slide cartridge.

Abstract: The present invention provides canine heavy chain and light chain (both ? and ?) variable domain nucleic acids and polypeptides. The present invention also provides caninized antibodies comprised of the presently disclosed canine variable domain framework sequences and CDRs specific for an antigen obtained from antibodies from other than canines (preferably mouse). The invention also provides methods of making caninized antibodies and using them. This disclosure specifically describes caninized antibodies that are useful in the treatment of canine allergy. The general process of caninization permits the development of useful therapeutics, which includes but is not limited to allergy, osteosarcomma's and lymphomma's.

Abstract: The present invention is a flow cytometry-based hematology system useful in the analysis of biological samples, particularly whole blood or blood-derived samples. The system is capable of determining at least a complete blood count (CBC), a five-part white blood cell differential, and a reticulocyte count from a whole blood sample. The system preferably uses a laser diode that emits a thin beam to illuminate cells in a flow cell and a lensless optical detection system to measure one or more of axial light loss, low-angle forward scattered light, high-angle forward scattered light, right angle scattered light, and time-of-flight measurements produced by the cells. The lensless optical detection system contains no optical components, other than photoreactive elements, and does not include any moving parts. Finally, the system uses a unique system of consumable reagent tubes that act as reaction chambers, mixing chambers, and waste chambers for the blood sample analyses.

Abstract: A method and device for determining pancreatic lipase in an animal blood sample. In one aspect, the device includes a compartmentalized container for storing and reacting the reagents for use in the assay. Abstract: ?-diketone fluorescent tags are disclosed, particularly those enabling the use of excitation energy in the near visible or visible spectrum. In some cases, these tags allow the use of cost-effective excitation devices such as LED's. The compounds form fluorescent chelates (complexes) with lanthanide (III) rare earth metal ions (such as Eu3+). The fluorescent complex may be included in a latex microparticle, such as a styrene latex particle. Ideally, the complex has an absorption maximum ? equal to or greater than 360 nm, and the compound is characterized by a pKa<9.0. Kits and methods for detecting target molecules (e.g. immunoassays) are also disclosed. Such methods and kits typically use a ligand for binding to the target molecule and a labeling agent attached to the ligand. The fluorescent complexes described above are at least part of the labeling agent.
Abstract: The present invention provides compositions and methods for extending the release times and lowering the toxicity of pharmacologically active compounds. The compounds comprise a salt of the pharmacologically active compound with a lipophilic counterion and a pharmaceutically acceptable water soluble solvent combined together to form an injectable composition. The lipophilic counterion may be a saturated or unsaturated C8–C22 fatty acid, and preferably may be a saturated or unsaturated C10–C18 fatty acid. When injected into a mammal, at least a portion of the composition precipitates and releases the active compound over time. Thus, the composition forms a slowly releasing drug depot of the active compound in the mammal. Therefore, the present invention enables one to provide a controlled dose administration of the active compound for a periods of up to 15 days or even longer.

Abstract: An embodiment of a portable veterinary medical record system includes a portable memory storage device that contains both a data structure for medical records and a set of processing instructions related to use of the device. The set of instructions may include authentication instructions for user authentication; instructions for data storage; instructions for updating medical record information; instructions for recognizing host veterinary patient information management software; and instructions for displaying medical record information, for example. According to the embodiment, the set of instructions are automatically executed by a computer that couples with the device. An embodiment provides for authentication cards and authentication PINs to facilitate double-key authentication. The device may be retained by an animal owner. Such retention makes records more readily available in an emergency or during travel.
