  • Patent number: 7146951
Abstract: A switchable cam follower, comprising two relatively movable, e.g., telescopable, units which can be connected via a coupling which engages over a dividing face between the units such that there is a large valve stroke. It is possible to generate no valve stroke or a small valve stroke if the coupling does not engage. At least one spring, which can be loaded compressively or torsionally, acts as a lost motion spring between the units. A compression limiting device impedes movement of the lost motion spring to the blocked position. In an incorrect switching operation in which the coupled units move undesirably toward each other and in a sudden manner under the influence of a valve spring force, movement of the spring into the “blocked” position to become seated is prevented by the limiting device.

  • Patent number: 7144344
Abstract: A tensioner for a traction drive to maintain a belt under tension includes a base part and a pivot arm connected to the base part for swinging about a rotation axis and having a free end for rotatable arrangement of a roller which is supported on the power transmitting member. A torsion spring acts on the pivot arm for urging the roller against the belt and applies an axial force on a damping unit for damping an adjusting movement of the pivot arm. The damping unit includes a slitted friction bushing constructed to have a wedge ring with conical inner and outer surfaces for formfitting engagement in a circular ring shaped recess of the base part or the pivot arm. The recess has contact surfaces to complement the inner and outer surfaces of the friction bushing for formation of two conical contact zones.

  • Patent number: 7096837
Abstract: The invention proposes a valve train of an internal combustion engine comprising a cam (1) and a directly driven cam follower (2), such as a roller tappet. This valve train is additionally designed for effecting an internal exhaust gas recirculation at an exhaust valve. A housing (4) of the cam follower (2) comprises two relatively displaceable elements (8, 9). The cam (1) is configured as a high lift cam (1a) for the inner element (8), and at least one low lift cam (1b) configured out-of-phase to the high lift cam (1a) is provided for the outer element (9). When it is desired to carry out an internal exhaust gas recirculation, the two elements (8, 9) are coupled to each other by a coupling element (10), so that, at the end of the base circle of the high lift cam (1a), the low lift cam (1b) protruding thereinto enables a slight post-opening of the gas exchange valve concerned and, thus also, an exhaust gas recirculation.
