Abstract: A bending actuator and methods for making and using the same. A beam of anisotropic polymer material, such as nylon, characterized by a greater degree of molecular orientation along a longitudinal axis than transverse to the longitudinal axis, has a heating element in thermal contact with at least one of a pair of opposing faces parallel to the longitudinal axis of the beam. The heating element in certain embodiments provides for photothermal activation of the bending actuator.
Abstract: A liquid crystal device includes a first substrate and a second substrate facing each other, a first electrode disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate and adjacent to the first substrate, a second electrode disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate and adjacent to the second substrate, a first alignment film disposed between the first electrode and the second electrode and adjacent to the first electrode, a second alignment film disposed between the first electrode and the second electrode and adjacent to the second electrode, and a liquid crystal layer disposed between the first alignment film and the second alignment film, wherein the liquid crystal layer includes a liquid crystal portion containing liquid crystal molecules, and a hydrophobic portion containing a hydrophobic material, the liquid crystal portion and the hydrophobic portion are phase-separated from each other, and the hydrophobic portion includes fluorine.

Abstract: A C-terminus modification to a binding pocket-modified vancomycin introduces a quaternary ammonium salt that provides a binding pocket-modified vancomycin analog with a second mechanism of action that is independent of D-Ala-D-Ala/D-Ala-D-Lac binding. The modification disrupts cell wall integrity and induces cell wall permeability complementary to the glycopeptide inhibition of cell wall synthesis, and provides synergistic improvements in antimicrobial potency (200-fold) against vancomycin-resistant bacteria. Combining the C-terminus and binding pocket modifications with an orthogonal (4-chlorobiphenyl) methyl addition to the vancomycin disaccharide provides even more potent antimicrobial agents whose activity can be attributed to three independent and synergistic mechanisms of action, only one of which requires D-Ala-D-Ala/D-Ala-D-Lac binding.

Abstract: Provided are a transition metal compound including a novel carbene compound as a ligand, a preparation method thereof, and an application thereof. The transition metal compound according to the present invention may form a structurally stable complex and also have a HOMO-LUMO energy gap and singlet-triplet transition energy which are significantly low as compared with a conventional transition metal compound. In addition, according to the present invention, the transition metal compound may be synthesized in large quantities by a very simple method, thereby having high commercial utility, and thus, an application using the compound is expected.

Abstract: According to the present invention, an organic light-emitting composite and a method of manufacturing the organic light-emitting composite are provided. Abstract: A biosignal-based avatar control system according to an embodiment of the present disclosure includes an avatar generating unit that generates a user's avatar in a virtual reality environment, a biosignal measuring unit that measures the user's biosignal using a sensor, a command determining unit that determines the user's command based on the measured biosignal, an avatar control unit that controls the avatar to perform the command, an output unit that outputs an image of the avatar in real-time, and a protocol generating unit for generating a protocol that provides predetermined tasks, and determines if the avatar performed the predetermined tasks. According to an embodiment of the present disclosure, it is possible to provide feedback in real-time by understanding the user's intention through analysis of biosignals and controlling the user's avatar in a virtual reality environment, thereby improving the user's brain function and motor function.

Abstract: Methods, systems and devices for managing humidity within an HVAC system including a nanostructured desiccant porous material configured to adsorb water from an inlet stream at a first air pressure and to release water from that material when subjected to a second air pressure when the second air pressure is lower than the first air pressure is located within a particular location so as to allow for the passage of wet air over the materials and allow adsorption of the water on to the material. When coupled with a vacuum pump water can be collected and released from the materials and the system, regenerating the material for future use and removing water from a stream at a significantly lower cost than existing processes.

Abstract: Engineered surfaces, such as surfaces having nano- and/or micro-scale features, may provide an enhanced flow boiling Critical Heat Flux (CHF) at ambient or higher pressures, which may enhance cooling. Enhancing flow boiling CHF may be desirable for nuclear reactors, where heat is generated by a heater such as a nuclear reactor core. Enhanced flow boiling CHF may provide larger safety margins and/or better economics of nuclear reactors, for example, because reactor power rating may be increased as cooling is enhanced.
