Abstract: Compositions and methods for adjustable lenses are provided. In some embodiments, the lenses contain a lens matrix material, a masking compound, and a prepolymer. The lens matrix material provides structure to the lens. The masking compound is capable of blocking polymerization or crosslinking of the prepolymer, until photoisomerization of the compound is triggered, and the compound is converted from a first isomer to a second isomer having a different absorption profile. The prepolymer is a composition that can undergo a polymerization or crosslinking reaction upon photoinitiation to alter one or more of the properties of the lenses.

Abstract: The invention provides a method and system for developing and using diagnoses of cancer and sepsis in canine subjects using Thymidine kinase (TK), c-reactive protein (CRP), and C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) as biomarkers. The level of each biomarker may be measured and an index may be computed using a two- or a three-biomarker method. The invention provides a predefined scale for the index where each range of the index matches a health condition. The latter allows a practitioner, through computing an index value of a patient, to determine the health status of the patient by comparing the index value to the predefined scale.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for utterance verification are provided for verifying a recognized vocabulary output from speech recognition. The apparatus for utterance verification includes a reference score accumulator, a verification score generator and a decision device. A log-likelihood score obtained from speech recognition is processed by taking a logarithm of the value of the probability of one of feature vectors of an input speech conditioned on one of states of each model vocabulary. A verification score is generated based on the processed result. The verification score is compared with a predetermined threshold value so as to reject or accept the recognized vocabulary.

Abstract: A motion/vibration detection system and method therefore are provided. The system includes a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter includes a transmit/receive antenna unit and a first oscillator. The receiver includes a receiving unit and a demodulation unit. The transmit/receive antenna unit receives an output signal from the first oscillator and transmits a detection signal. The detection signal is reflected from at least one object under detection into a reflected detection signal, which is received by the transmit/receive antenna unit. The transmit/receive antenna unit injects the reflected detection signal into the first oscillator and accordingly the first oscillator is under a self-injection locking mode. The receiving unit receives the detection signal. The demodulation unit demodulates the detection signal received by the receiving unit into a baseband output signal, to extract at least one motion/vibration information of the objection under detection.

Abstract: The approaches and apparatuses for fabricating cathodes can be adapted to improve control over cathode composition and to better accommodate batteries of any shape and their assembly. For example, a first solid having an alkali metal halide, a second solid having a transition metal, and a third solid having an alkali metal aluminum halide are combined into a mixture. The mixture can be heated in a vacuum to a temperature that is greater than or equal to the melting point of the third solid. When the third solid is substantially molten liquid, the mixture is compressed into a desired cathode shape and then cooled to solidify the mixture in the desired cathode shape.
