Abstract: Disclosed is an alkaline extract of shredded pinecones yields a polyphenylpropanoid polysaccharide complex (PPC) that functions as an orally active immune adjuvant. Specifically, the oral PPC boosts the number of antigen-specific memory CD8+ T cells generated in response to a variety of vaccine types (DNA, protein, and dendritic cell) and bias the response towards one that is predominately a T helper 1 type. The oral PPC has potential for use be to enhance the T cell response generated by a variety of prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines designed to target a cellular response.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of an antimicrobial coating solution is described. The process comprises the steps of: (i) mixing a chelating agent with titanium alkoxide and fluoroacetic acid; and (ii) adding an aqueous solution to the mixture from step (i). The antimicrobial coating described is visible light activated. The coating is applied to surfaces and then heat treated to form a transparent layer on the surface. This is particularly advantageous where the surface is glass.

Abstract: Deflection of a free end of one plate-like member, that is caused by uniform stress, is transmitted to an other plate-like member by moving a free end of the other plate-like member. According to this configuration, the uniform stress applied to the one plate-like member is converted into stress induced by a point force in the other plate-like member, and then, the induced stress is concentrated on a fixed end side narrow portion in which a piezoresistor is provided. Thus, a novel structure for a piezoresistive surface stress sensor having high sensitivity to uniform stress applied to the surface of the sensor is provided.
