  • Patent number: 9190596
Abstract: A three-dimensional thermoelectric energy harvester and a fabrication method thereof. Low-resistivity silicon is etched to form a plurality of grooves and silicon columns between the grooves, and an insulating layer is formed on a surface of the groove, and thermoelectric columns are fabricated by using a thin-film deposition technique, so that the thermoelectric column and a neighboring silicon column form a thermocouple pair; and then, a metal wiring is fabricated by processes such as etching and deposition, followed by thinning of the substrate and bonding of the supporting substrates, thereby completing fabrication of the three-dimensional thermoelectric energy harvester. Fabrication of the thermocouple pair structure by one thin-film deposition process simplifies the fabrication process. The thermocouple pair using silicon ensures a high Seebeck coefficient. The use of vertical thermocouple pairs having a column structure improves the mechanical stability of the thermoelectric energy harvester.

  • Patent number: 9190734
Abstract: Technologies are presented for providing circularly polarized antenna topologies based on multiple bent-dipole elements over a ground plane configuration. In some examples, Moxon based cross radiating elements may be fed through a hybrid 90° quadrature coupler. The radiating element may be widened and tapered relative to a standard bent-dipole configuration forming bow tie structures with approximately 90° bends to achieve broadband operation. The tapered branches may be split into two sub-branches and the bend angle increased to further increase bandwidth and gain of the antenna.

  • Patent number: 9187524
Abstract: Arylomycin analogs are provided, wherein the analogs can have broad spectrum bioactivity. Resistance to the antibiotic bioactivity of natural product arylomycin in a range of pathogenic bacterial species has been found to depend upon single amino acid mutations at defined positions of bacterial Signal Peptidases (SPases), wherein the presence of a proline residue confers arylomycin resistance. Arylomycin analogs are provided herein that can overcome that resistance and provide for a broader spectrum of antibiotic bioactivity than can natural product arylomycins such as arylomycin A2. Methods for determining if a bacterial strain is susceptible to narrow spectrum arylomycin antibiotics, or if a broad spectrum analog is required for treatment, is provided. Pharmaceutical compositions and methods of treatment of bacterial infections, and methods of synthesis of arylomycin analogs, are provided.

  • Patent number: 9190961
Abstract: A Programmable-Gain Amplifier (PGA) has a digital value that programmably adjusts the gain of the analog amplifier. A variable capacitor has several switched sub-capacitors that are enabled by the digital value. Enabled sub-capacitors are switched between a sampled input and a virtual ground on one terminal, and connect to a summing node on the other terminal. The summing node connects to the inverting input of an op amp either through a switch or through a double-sampling capacitor that stores an offset. A feedback capacitor is in parallel with a sampling capacitor during a second clock phase when direct-charge transfer occurs, reducing power consumption of the amplifier. The feedback capacitor samples the sampled input during the first clock phase. The PGA gain is proportional to the sum of capacitances of enabled sub-capacitors. The gain can be adjusted for sensor inputs to an Analog Front-End (AFE), such as for an electro-cardiogram (ECG).
