  • Publication number: 20150323538
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide a method detecting and treating cancer, such as lung cancer. In some aspects, the method may include detecting cancer in a subject, which may comprise assessing the expression of a marker in a sample from the subject. For example, the marker may comprise c-Met and/or Fn14. In some embodiments, if the subject is diagnosed as having cancer, the method may further provide administering a therapeutically effective amount of a substance that reduces the expression level of Fn14 to the subject to reduce the invasive and migratory capabilities of the cancer.

Abstract: A precursor for labeling therapeutic agents for liver cancer and a method for manufacturing the same are revealed. The chemical structure of the precursor has a ligand linked to complex compounds of radioisotopes. Moreover, the chemical structure of the precursor further includes a specific functional group soluble in Lipiodol or having properties of Lipiodol. Thus the radioisotopes attached to the precursor are allowed to retain in hepatic tissues of patients with liver cancer for internal radiation therapy of liver cancer.

  • Patent number: 9183993
Abstract: A one-pot synthesis of Nb5+-doped TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) with low cost and high efficiency for dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is disclosed in the present invention. The Nb5+-doped TiO2 NPs with Nb dopants of 0˜5 mol % are prepared by directly mixing TiO2 slurry with Nb2O5 gel obtained by UV treatment of a mixture of NbCl5 powder, ethanol and water in a certain ratio, following by heat treatment without using hydrothermal method. The as-prepared NPs exhibit well-crystallized pure anatase TiO2 phase with uniform particle distribution. The incorporation of Nb5+ leads to a stronger and broader light absorption in visible light range and a decrease of band gap with increasing Nb dopant content, which enhances the efficiencies of light-harvesting and electron injection and suppresses the charge recombination. The present method provides a simple and cost-effective mass-production route to synthesize n-type metallic ion doped TiO2 nanoparticles as excellent photoanode materials.

  • Patent number: 9181114
Abstract: Provided are a mineralizing removal method and apparatus for highly concentrated iodine in radioactive wastewater. According to the present invention, since only a small amount of sludge is discharged as compared to the previous treatment methods, a generation amount of the radioactive waste may be significantly decreased, such that wastewater containing highly or ultra-highly concentrated iodine may also be effectively treated. Further, only iodine may be selectively removed regardless of the presence of competitive anions in the wastewater. Treatment may be performed under a neutral or weak alkaline condition rather than an acidic condition, such that a volatilization of radioactive iodine was fundamentally blocked, and at the time of discharging the wastewater, a neutralization treatment process is not required.

  • Patent number: 9180050
Abstract: An implanted parylene tube shunt relieves intra-ocular pressure. The device is implanted with an open end in the anterior chamber of the eye, allowing excess fluid to be drained through the tube out of the eye. In one embodiment, only a first end of the tube implanted into the anterior chamber of the eye is open. Intra-ocular pressure (IOP) is then monitored, for example utilizing an implanted sensor. When IOP exceeds a critical valve, a practitioner intervenes, puncturing with a laser a thinned region of the tube lying outside the eye, thereby initiating drainage of fluid and relieving pressure. In accordance with alternative embodiments, the both ends of the tube are open, and the tube includes a one-way valve configured to permit drainage where IOP exceeds the critical value. The tube may include projecting barbs to anchor the tube in the eye without the need for sutures.
