Abstract: The invention provides an efficient method to treating a nutrient rich process water, such as municipal, agricultural, and/or farm water. The process water is treated by first extracting one or more P- and/or N-based ionic species from the process water with an extractant phase, resulting in an ion-loaded extractant phase; and then stripping one or more ionic species from the ion-loaded extractant phase to obtain a stripped extractant phase and useful concentrated ionic products. The stripped extractant phase is preferably recycled. A continuous flow treatment process is provided. The process is also capable of inactivating pathogens and reducing odors.

Abstract: A monolithic ultrasonic horn where the horn, backing, and pre-stress structures are combined in a single monolithic piece is disclosed. Pre-stress is applied by external flexure structures. The provision of the external flexures has numerous advantages including the elimination of the need for a pre-stress bolt. The removal of the pre-stress bolt eliminates potential internal electric discharge points in the actuator. In addition, it reduces the chances of mechanical failure in the actuator stacks that result from the free surface in the hole of conventional ring stacks. In addition, the removal of the stress bolt and the corresponding reduction in the overall number of parts reduces the overall complexity of the resulting ultrasonic horn actuator and simplifies the ease of the design, fabrication and integration of the actuator of the present invention into other structures.

Abstract: A wet-film particle impactor includes a housing, a nozzle, an impact surface and at least one water inlet. The housing defines a chamber therein and has an air outlet and a water outlet. The nozzle is disposed on the housing and has a plurality of through holes in communication with an air inlet and the chamber. The water inlet is formed on the impact surface for introducing water into the chamber. Whereby, the wet-film particle impactor is adapted to introduce the particle-containing air stream into the chamber sequentially via the air inlet and the through holes. The particles in the air stream are collected by the impact surface. The water introduced from the water inlet flushes the impact surface, carries the particles collected by the impact surface, and then exits the chamber via the water outlet.

Abstract: The present invention provides pluripotent and multipotent stem cells, including embryonic stem cells, induced pluri-potent stem cells, adult stem cells and other progenitor cells, that have been modified to contain an inducible cancer-specific suicide gene construct that, upon induction, selectively kills stem- or progenitor-cell-derived cancerous cells without significant effect on healthy tissues or other (noncancerous) cells derived from such cells. This suicide gene construct expresses a dominant negative MYC-interfering protein (D-MIP) that acts as a tumor suppressor in cancer cells without significant deleterious effects on healthy cells and tissues. The suicide gene construct can also be used in gene therapies that produce cancers arising in association with the presence of the gene therapy vector and likewise discriminates between killing of cancerous cells and non-cancerous cells modified with a gene therapy vector.
