Abstract: A method for preparing a dehumidifying element including a superabsorbent polymer (SAP) comprises mixing SAP particles with inorganic salt particles, exposing the SAP particles and the inorganic salt particles to a high humidity atmosphere thereby absorbing the deliquescent inorganic salt by the SAP, and drying moisture inside the SAP that has absorbed the inorganic salt. Accordingly, an amount of the inorganic salt absorbed by the SAP is minutely controlled thus to precisely control a degree of an ion exchange therebetween, thereby freely controlling a hygroscopic property of the dehumidifying element including the SAP. Furthermore, since the SAP particles and the inorganic salt particles are physically mixed together, the mixture ratio therebetween is entirely uniform, and therefore, the reliability of the product can be obtained.

Abstract: An 82Sr/82Rb generator column is made using a fluid impervious cylindrical container having a cover for closing the container in a fluid tight seal, and further having an inlet for connection of a conduit for delivering a fluid into the container and an outlet for connection of a conduit for conducting the fluid from the container. An ion exchange material fills the container, the ion exchange material being compacted within the container to a density that permits, the ion exchange material to be eluted at a rate of at least 5 ml/min at a fluid pressure of 1.5 pounds per square inch (10 kPa). The generator column can be repeatedly recharged with 82Sr. The generator column is compatible with either three-dimensional or two-dimensional positron emission tomography systems.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for timing acquisition and carrier frequency offset estimation of an OFDM communication system and an apparatus using the same. For this purpose the present invention provides a method for calculating at least one auto-correlation and calculating an observation value by performing a sliding sum on the at least one auto-correlation, and calculating a peak point of an absolute value of the observation as frame timing. In addition, the present invention provides a method for generating a third OFDM symbol that is generated by delaying a second OFDM symbol, calculating an observation value through the second and third OFDM symbols, and calculating a phase difference from a result of multiplication of the observation value and a conjugate complex value of the observation value such that a carrier frequency offset can be estimated.

Abstract: An apparatus for converting rotational motion into radial motion may include a motor, and arm assembly, and, optionally, a panel. The motor may include two coaxial rotors and a motion generator coupled to the rotors. The arm assembly may include first and second arm attached at their proximal ends to the first and second rotors, respectively. The optional panel may be attached to the distal ends of the arms. The distal ends of the arms may be spatially fixed with respect to one another but rotatable with respect to one another, so that counter-rotation of the rotors can cause both distal ends and the panel, if present, to move radially away from the rotors' axis.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a negative photoresist composition which mainly is composed of a) a polyimide having pendant carboxyl groups, wherein a portion of the carboxyl groups reacted with glycidyl (meth)acrylate monomers to form covalent bonds. The photoresist composition further contains b) monomers having a tertiary amino group and a C?C double bond, which form ionic bonds with the remaining hydroxyl groups of the polyimide. The photoresist composition further contains c) a photoinitiator which is also called photosensitizer. The components a) to c) are all dissolved in a solvent.

Abstract: This invention relates in general to a method for molecular fingerprinting. The method can be used for forensic identification (e.g. DNA fingerprinting, especially by VNTR), bacterial typing, and human/animal pathogen diagnosis. More particularly, molecules such as polynucleotides (e.g. DNA) can be assessed or sorted by size in a microfabricated device that analyzes the polynucleotides according to restriction fragment length polymorphism. In a microfabricated device according to the invention, DNA fragments or other molecules can be rapidly and accurately typed using relatively small samples, by measuring for example the signal of an optically-detectable (e.g., fluorescent) reporter associated with the polynucleotide fragments.

Abstract: A matrix electrode-controlling device for driving a droplet includes a substrate, a dielectric layer positioned on the substrate, a plurality of control electrodes positioned in the dielectric layer in a matrix manner, and a ground electrode positioned at a predetermined position around the control electrodes without generating electromagnetic shielding effect. The control electrodes in the same row are electrically connected to form a plurality of lateral controlling rows and the control electrodes in the same column are electrically connected to form a plurality of longitudinal controlling columns. The droplet is driven to move on or above the dielectric layer by biasing the ground electrode to the ground voltage and applying a predetermined voltage to one of the controlling rows and/or to one of the controlling columns to undergo the predetermined assaying operation.

Abstract: An optical disk primarily includes a recording layer and a viscosity-variable material layer. When a laser beam is irradiated to reproduce a record written on the recording layer, part of the crystalline thin layer of the viscosity-variable material layer is softened to vary the optical constant of the softened region. Consequently, a plane having discontinuous optical constants is produced at the boundary between the softened region and the other region, so that a ring-shaped specific region is produced in a light spot. The ring-shaped specific region allows record patterns smaller than or equal to the resolution limit to be reproduced with the same signal intensity as that of the other record patterns larger than the resolution limit.

Abstract: A nitride based semiconductor laser diode device comprising a selective growth mask with a grating structure is proposed. The island-like stacked epitaxial layers including the P-type cladding layer is formed from the selective growth mask upon the active layer of the semiconductor laser structure. This proposed structure can reduce the strain by the deformation due to the isolate structure. Thus, increase of thickness of the cladding layer and/or increase of composition difference can be achieved without crack existing in the island-like stacked epitaxial layers. The optical confinement can be effectively improved.

Abstract: A method of reconstituting an animal embryo involves transferring the nucleus from a quiescent donor cell into a suitable recipient cell. The donor cell is quiescent, in that it is caused to exit from the growth and division cycle at G1 and to arrest in the G0 state. Nuclear transfer may take place by cell fusion. The reconstituted embryo may then give rise to one or more animals. The invention is useful in the production of transgenic animals as well as non-transgenics of high genetic merit.

Abstract: Methods for inducing a population of T cells to proliferate by activating the population of T cells and stimulating an accessory molecule on the surface of the T cells with a ligand which binds the accessory molecule are described. T cell proliferation occurs in the absence of exogenous growth factors or accessory cells. T cell activation is accomplished by stimulating the T cell receptor (TCR)/CD3 complex or the CD2 surface protein. To induce proliferation of an activated population T cells, an accessory molecule on the surface of the T cells, such as CD28, is stimulated with a ligand which binds the accessory molecule. The T cell population expanded by the method of the invention can be genetically transduced and used for immunotherapy or can be used in methods of diagnosis.

Abstract: The invention presents yttria elements containing high-density chrome based refractory composites, which consist of: (A) Fused polymeric compound as aggregate, containing: 40 to 50 wt % of particles in size from 1 to 4 mm and 15 to 25 wt % of particles in size below 1 mm; (B) A matrix consisting of fused polymeric compounds with particle sizes below 66 ?m, active sintered Al2O3, active industrial Cr2O3 and Y2O3, (C) Binders accounting for 2.5 to 3.5 wt %. Since Y2O3 has resistance to the slag corrosion and penetration with its compatibility with slag, it has been introduced to activate the major component Cr2O3 crystal lattice in favor with Al2O3 so that it helps to reduce the sintering temperature, increase the rate of finished products as well as reduce the manufacturing cost.
