    Abstract: An optical phase shifter according to an embodiment for achieving the object of the present disclosure includes a first semiconductor layer formed on a substrate, a second semiconductor layer having opposite polarity to the first semiconductor layer, an insulating layer formed between the first semiconductor layer and the second semiconductor layer, and including ferroelectrics, a first electrode connected to the first semiconductor layer, and a second electrode connected to the second semiconductor layer. According to an embodiment, the introduction of ferroelectric materials to a semiconductor-insulator-semiconductor (SIS) optical phase shifter brings about improvement in charge collection efficiency resulting from the negative capacitance effect, thereby achieving higher phase modulation efficiency and lower power consumption. Additionally, it is possible to realize a new structure of optical switch or modulator device through design changes of the type of ferroelectrics and the structural variables.

    Abstract: A controllable shape memory alloy (SMA) hinge apparatus comprises multiple SMA elements to effect a first angle of rotation and a second angle of rotation between a first object and a second object. In one example, respective SMA elements are independently activated by Joule heating to rotate the first object and/or the second object. SMA elements undergo a three-dimensional transformation, and a pair of elements may undergo antagonistic transformations so as to provide for a multiple-use bidirectional non-continuous rotary actuator. SMA elements may be trained to achieve different angles of rotations between the objects (e.g., zero degrees and 90 degrees). In some examples, the first object may be a spacecraft (e.g., a satellite) and the second object may be a deployable structure (e.g., a robotic appendage, a deployable solar panel, a deployable aperture, a deployable mirror, a deployable radiator, and at least one actuator to steer an antenna dish).

    Abstract: A dielectric barrier discharge reactor for catalytic nonthermal plasma production of hydrogen from methane. The dielectric barrier discharge reactor includes two end pieces connected by a dielectric tube, two steam generators, two catalyst cages, two perforated tube center electrodes, a center electrode rod, a grounding electrode. In one aspect, the end pieces and the dielectric tube are fabricated from ceramic and fused quartz respectively. In another aspect, the dielectric barrier discharge reactor further includes catalyst cages. In yet another aspect, the catalyst cages contain catalysts in form of pellets. In an alternate aspect, the dielectric barrier discharge reactor acts to cause a reaction between incoming reactant gases. The reaction is achieved under a plasma which is generated between the perforated tubular center electrode and the ground electrode. In yet another alternate aspect, the dielectric barrier discharge reactor is used at home to generate hydrogen from methane.

    Abstract: A low-temperature quick-freezing freeze-drying system provided by the invention includes: a compressor unit, a first heat exchanger, an air cooler, a second heat exchanger, a throttling element, a third heat exchanger, a circulating fan, a drying chamber, a third valve, a fourth valve and connecting pipelines, and the above elements form a refrigeration circulation loop, a quick freezing/freeze-drying circulation loop, and a desorption drying circulation loop, thereby realizing the low-temperature quick-freezing and freeze-drying of materials. The invention adopts the heat exchangers with a cold storage function, so that the refrigeration capacity of the compressor is stored and used intensively to achieve rapid cooling of the materials.
