Abstract: A method and apparatus for uplink transmission is disclosed. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) transmits, to a Node-B, a first type message, a second type message, and a third type message. The first type message indicates that the WTRU has uplink buffered data available for transmission. The second type message includes a plurality of indications, wherein each indication indicates an amount of uplink buffered data associated with at least one priority. The third type message indicates an amount of uplink buffered data and has less information than the second type message. The WTRU receives, in response to the transmitted first type message, the transmitted second type message, or the transmitted third type message, an uplink data scheduling message. The WTRU transmits uplink data over an uplink channel based on the received uplink data scheduling message.

Abstract: Enhancements are provided for the radio link control (RLC) protocol in wireless communication systems where variable RLC packet data unit (PDU) size is allowed. When flexible RLC PDU sizes are configured by upper layers, radio network controller (RNC)/Node B flow control, RLC flow control, status reporting and polling mechanisms are configured to use byte count based metrics in order to prevent possible buffer underflows in the Node B and buffer overflows in the RNC. The enhancements proposed herein for the RLC apply to both uplink and downlink communications.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for receiving at least one IP-based registration message from a first UE is disclosed. Abstract: A method and apparatus for combining space-frequency block coding (SFBC) in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system is described herein. A transmitter, according to one embodiment, may include four antennas and circuitry configured to transmit in an OFDM symbol time period using both frequency diversity and SFBC. For frequency diversity at least one first data element may be repeated producing at least two second data elements and the two second data elements are transmitted using different subcarriers. For space frequency block coding, a pair of third data elements may be space frequency block coded producing four fourth data elements. The four fourth data elements may be transmitted using two subcarriers and only two of the four antennas.

Abstract: A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) may determine channel quality indicators (CQIs) from measurements of downlink transmissions from many cells. CQIs for a first cell of the many cells may be transmitted by the WTRU at transmission time intervals (TTIs) and CQIs for a second cell of the many cells may not be transmitted with CQIs of the first cell. In response to expiration of a timer for the first cell, transmission of the control information may be ceased for the first cell and transmission of CQIs may continue for the second cell. Transmission of the CQIs for the second cell may be ceased in response to a received layer 2 (L2) message while transmission of CQIs for other cells continue.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling an optimization of handover procedures between universal terrestrial radio access (UTRA) release 6 (R6) cells and UTRA release 7 (R7) cells are disclosed. When a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) is moving between an R6 cell and an R7 cell, or between R7 cells, a handover is initiated from a source Node-B to a target Node-B. Abstract: A method for downlink power control for use in a spread spectrum time division communication system having time slots for communication, implemented in a user equipment, includes receiving data in a command per coded composite transport channel (CCTrCH) transmitted over a plurality of time slots. An interference power for each time slot of the plurality of time slots is measured and a single power command for the entire CCTrCH is transmitted in response to a signal to interference ratio of the received CCTrCH and the measured interference power measurement for each time slot. A subsequent data is received in the CCTrCH communication having a transmission power level for each downlink communication time slot set individually in response to the interference power measurement for that time slot and the single power command for the entire CCTrCH.

Abstract: A method for performing cell reselection first determines a current cell selection quality value. The cell selection quality value is compared to a predetermined threshold. Measurements of neighboring cells are taken if the cell selection quality value is less than or equal to the predetermined threshold. Measurements can be taken of intra-frequency cells, inter-frequency cells, and inter-radio access technology cells. If a neighboring cell is found that is better than the current cell based on the measurements, then the better neighbor cell is reselected to.

Abstract: A simple and robust CTL is used for time tracking of multipath components of a spread spectrum signal transmitted over a wireless multipath fading channel. A digital code-tracking loop includes despreading early and late data samples by use of a pseudonoise sequence, an error signal output generated by the despreading, and adjustment for a plurality of on-time, early and late samples, a data rate of a control signal provided as a fractional proportion of a data rate of error signals.
Abstract: A method for taking measurements with a smart antenna in a wireless communication system having a plurality of STAs begins by sending a measurement request from a first STA to a second STA. At least two measurement packets are transmitted consecutively from the second STA to the first STA. Each measurement packet is received at the first STA using a different antenna beam. The first STA performs measurements on each measurement packet and selects an antenna beam direction based on the measurement results.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for selecting multiple transport formats and transmitting multiple transport blocks (TBs) in a transmission time interval simultaneously with multiple hybrid automatic repeat request (H-ARQ) processes in a wireless communication system are disclosed. Abstract: A method and wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) for transmitting data over an enhanced uplink (EU) channel is disclosed. The WTRU receives a scheduled grant and at least one non-scheduled grant. The WTRU transmits a medium access control for EU channel (MAC-e) protocol data unit (PDU) over an EU channel. The MAC-e PDU includes multiplexed data. The multiplexed data includes scheduled data. An amount of the multiplexed data is not greater than a size of a largest supported EU transport format combination (E-TFC) size that does not exceed a size based on the received scheduled grant, the received at least one non-scheduled grant, and a power offset. The MAC-e PDU is transmitted based on a selected E-TFC. The selected E-TFC is a smallest E-TFC that supports the multiplexed data of the MAC-e PDU.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for optimizing the system capacity of an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system that uses with Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antennas. In a receiver, a target quality of service (QoS) metric and reference data rate are set. The target QoS metric may be set to a predetermined value and/or may be adjusted dynamically with respect to packet error rate (PER) by a slow outer-loop control processor. The QoS of received signals are compared to the target QoS. Depending on the comparison, the receiver generates a channel quality indicator (CQI) which is sent to the transmitter. The CQI is a one or two bit indicator which indicates to the transmitter to disable, adjust or maintain data transmission rates of particular sub-carriers, groups of sub-carriers per transmit antenna, or groups of sub-carriers across all transmit antennas. At the transmitter, the transmitted data rate is disabled, adjusted or maintained.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for cell update while in a Cell_FACH state are disclosed. After selecting a target cell, system information is read from the target cell including high speed downlink shared channel (HS-DSCH) common system information. A radio network temporary identity (RNTI) received in a source cell is cleared and a variable HS_DSCH_RECEPTION is set to TRUE. An HS-DSCH medium access control (MAC-hs) entity is configured based on the HS-DSCH common system information. High speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) transmission is then received in the target cell. A CELL UPDATE message is sent to notify of a cell change. The HSDPA transmission may be received using a common H-RNTI broadcast in the system information, a reserved H-RNTI as requested in a CELL UPDATE message, or a temporary identity which is a subset of a U-RNTI. The MAC-hs entity may be reset.

Abstract: The present invention is a method and system for station location based neighbor determination and handover probability estimation. A serving access point determines the location and movement measurements of a station (STA). Neighboring access points report coordinates of cell fringes of the neighboring access points. The STA sends a request for system information to the current access point along with current location of the STA. The current access point provides the system information, and the STA utilizes the system information to determine best handover candidate from among neighboring access points and an estimate of the time for handover.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for scheduling transmissions via an enhanced dedicated channel (E-DCH) are disclosed. A scheduled power is calculated for scheduled data flows. A remaining transmit power is calculated for the E-DCH transmission. A rate request message is generated, wherein the scheduled power, remaining transmit power and rate request message are used to select transport format combinations (TFCs) and multiplex data scheduled for the E-DCH transmission.
