Abstract: The present invention allows for effective sharing of the hardware memory of a wireless transmit receive unit (WTRU). The memory will be shared among various buffers of different entities. More particularly, memory will be shared among the MAC reordering buffers and the RLC reception buffers.

Abstract: A multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) beamforming-based single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) system is disclosed. At the transmitter, a fast Fourier transform (FFT) is performed on transmission data to generate frequency domain data. The frequency domain transmit data is mapped to assigned subcarriers. An inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) is performed on the transmit data mapped to the assigned subcarriers to generate time domain transmit data. The time domain transmit data is transmitted via antennas. At a receiver, an FFT is performed on the received data to generate frequency domain received data. Subcarrier demapping is performed to extract data mapped on the assigned subcarriers. A channel estimator generates a channel matrix which is decomposed into U, D and VH matrices. A channel distortion and interference between transmit and receive antennas are equalized based on the decomposed channel matrices to the extracted frequency domain received data.

Abstract: A plurality of data signals are received over an antenna array having a plurality of antenna elements. The data signals are transmitted over a shared spectrum in a wireless communication system. A signal having each of the data signals is received over each antenna element. The plurality of data signals are grouped into a plurality of groups. The received signals of the antenna elements are matched filtered for a first group of the plurality of groups, producing a matched filtered result. Data is jointly detected of the first group using the matched filtered result. An interference correction signal is constructed using the detected data for each antenna element. The interference cancelled result is subtracted from the received signal of each antenna element, producing an interference cancelled result for each antenna element. Data is successively detected for remaining groups using the interference cancelled result for each antenna element.
Abstract: The number of users and data capacity of wireless systems are increased by employing apparatus and method for increasing the number of spreading codes available in the system by providing a mechanism to reuse the already allocated spreading code or use the codes that may correlate to those already being used within the same sector/cell. This, in return, provides capacity improvement proportional to the number of added base station (BS) antennas for each cell. An antenna null steering technique for code allocation maintains the cross correlation properties of the codes only for the desired user and to obtain a gain in capacity improvement.

Abstract: A method for facilitating inter-system handover by a multi-mode wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) is disclosed. The WTRU is capable of communicating in multiple wireless communication systems using different wireless communication protocols. A first wireless communication system provides a hot spot within the coverage area of a second wireless communication system. A base station in a cell in the second wireless communication system generates and transmits a message to inform the WTRU of the existence of the hot spot located in the vicinity of the cell. The WTRU receives the message and is therefore informed of the existence of the hot spot in the vicinity of the cell.
Abstract: A method and system for performing peer-to-peer wireless communication between stations (STAs) within a basic service set (BSS) while maintaining connectivity with an access point (AP) in the BSS are disclosed. A source STA, an AP and a destination STA negotiate a direct link setup (DLS) channel for performing peer-to-peer communication between the source STA and the destination STA. The DLS channel may be different from a BSS channel used for communication between the AP and each of the STAs. The source STA and the destination STA then perform peer-to-peer communication on the negotiated DLS channel.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for multi-user detection is disclosed. A signal is received in a shared spectrum, and samples of the received signals are produced as a received vector. The received vector is segmented into vector segments. Each segment has a portion that overlaps with another segment and the overlapping portion includes at least one chip less than twice a channel impulse response length. For each vector segment, symbols are successively determined for communications by determining symbols for a communication in the communications, ordering the communications by received power and removing a contribution of the communication from the vector segment. The determining of symbols includes equalizing an input vector corresponding to a segment of the received vector using fast Fourier transform. The determined symbols are assembled into a data vector for each communication in the communications.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for improving handover in an IEEE 802.21 compliant communication network. A query is transmitted from a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) to a media independent handover (MIH) server (MIHS). The WTRU includes a target point of attachment (PoA) and/or a preferred mobile inter protocol (MIP) method. The WTRU receives a response from the MIHS indicating the MIP method supported by the target PoA. Based on the received response, the WTRU may make an informed decision regarding handover.

Abstract: A method for processing enhanced dedicated channel (E-DCH) data in a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) includes sending two messages. A first message is sent from a physical layer to a medium access control (MAC) layer, and triggers MAC layer processing of E-DCH data. Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing a handover are disclosed. An Internet protocol (IP) multimedia subsystem (IMS) client registers with an IMS network and establishes an MIH session with an MIH application server using an SIP. The IMS client establishes a session for IP-based service, (e.g., VoIP), with a communication peer using SIP messaging. MIH messages are exchanged for handover with the MIH application server over IP using SIP messages by encapsulating the MIH messages in SIP instant messages. Alternatively, the MIH messages may be exchanged with the MIH application over IP by sending equivalent SIP messages in place of the MIH messages.

Abstract: A method and an apparatus for indicating a temporary block flow (TBF) to which a piggybacked acknowledgement/non-acknowledgement (PAN) field is addressed. A method and apparatus of performing receive processing to reduce the probability of false acceptance of erroneous PANs are also disclosed. A transmit station generates a PAN check sequence (PCS) and performs a channel coding on a PAN field and the PCS. The transmit station scrambles the encoded bits of the PAN field and the PCS with a TBF-specific scrambling code. Because of the scrambling, the PCS decoding at a receive station will pass if the data block is received by an intended receive station, while the PCS decoding will fail if received by a non-intended receive station. Alternatively, the scrambling may be performed before the channel coding. Alternatively, the transmit station may combine the PAN field and a temporary flow identity (TFI) to generate a PCS.

Abstract: A method and system for controlling the transmission power of at least one downlink (DL) enhanced uplink (EU) signaling channel such that enhanced dedicated channel (E-DCH) DL signaling is delivered efficiently and reliably. At least one of the WTRU and the Node-B compute EU transmission failure statistics on the DL EU signaling channel and report the EU transmission failure statistics to the RNC. The RNC then adjusts a transmission power offset of the DL EU signaling channel to be used in determining transmission power level of the DL EU signaling channel at the Node-B based on the EU transmission failure statistics.

Abstract: A transmitter generates and transmits a low rate signal to its intended receiver. Upon receiving the low rate signal, the intended receiver generates and transmits a channel sounding response (CSR), said CSR being a short burst having a predefined transmit format and carrying predetermined information. The transmitter then analyzes the CSR and determines uplink channel response, estimates downlink channel response, and determines appropriate transmit parameter settings based on the analysis and downlink response estimate. Adjustment of the transmit parameters can be made in either the MAC or PHY layer or in a combination of both. After adjusting its transmit parameters and modulating sub-carriers with user-data according to the determined transmit settings, the transmitter transmits the user-data to the receiver on a preferred portion of bandwidth.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting data in code division multiple access communications. The method includes processing spread first data with a channel response matrix using an equalization circuit to pre-equalize the spread data to compensate for a channel response prior to transmission. The pre-equalized data is received and recovered by a receiver. Second data, transmitted from the receiver, is received and recovered using the equalization circuit to equalize the second data to compensate for a channel response that the first data encountered.
Abstract: The present invention is related to a method and apparatus for implementing space frequency block coding (SFBC) in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) wireless communication system. The present invention is applicable to both a closed loop mode and an open loop mode. In the closed loop mode, power loading and eigen-beamforming are performed based on channel state information (CSI). A channel coded data stream is multiplexed into two or more data streams. Power loading is performed based on the CSI on each of the multiplexed data streams. SFBC encoding is performed on the data streams for each of the paired subcarriers. Then, eigen-beamforming is performed based on the CSI to distribute eigenbeams to multiple transmit antennas. The power loading may be performed on two or more SFBC encoding blocks or on each eigenmodes. Additionally, the power loading may be performed across subcarriers or subcarrier groups for weak eigenmodes.
