  • Patent number: 6675544
Abstract: A composite wood panel having a first and second longitudinal edge, wherein the first edge includes a groove and the second edge includes a tongue for interlocking and engaging the complementary edges of an adjacent tongue and groove wood panel. The groove has two sides and a base transverse thereto, and the tongue has two side walls and a head extending outward from the second longitudinal edge, thereby forming a juncture between the side walls of the tongue and the second longitudinal edge. A shoulder is located at the juncture between one side wall of the tongue and the second longitudinal edge. Upon assembly of two complementary wood panels as described above, a novel tongue and groove joint is formed wherein the shoulder will abut the first longitudinal edge, thus preventing the tongue from being completely introduced into the complementary groove.

  • Patent number: 6634729
Abstract: In an apparatus for applying ink patterns on oriented strand boards, the boards are serially moved closely adjacent to and past ink jets, and ink is deposited on the boards. To deposit the ink accurately on the boards they are advanced by pinch and drive rollers which also ensure that the boards are flat as they move past the jets. Detectors are used to detect boards which cannot be flattened or are irregular in shape and in such a case the ink jets are moved to avoid impact by an irregular board. During printing, the panels and the ink jets are about 0.0625 inches to about 0.125 inches apart, and the panels are moved at a rate of about 150 ft/minute to 600 ft/minute.

  • Patent number: 6558748
Abstract: A process for forming a polyurea coating on a wood composite substrate comprises the steps of applying an isocyanate to an edge of the wood substrate to form a pretreated edge and applying a polymer latex to the pretreated edge to form the polyurea coating. This polyurea coating provides excellent protection against the penetration of water through the edges and into the interior of the wood composite material and wood composite materials having this polyurea coating have significantly less edge swelling and adsorb considerably less water than wood composites that have no such protective coatings.

  • Patent number: 6479127
Abstract: The present invention relates to the manufacture of a multi-layered board having a stable, and moisture-resistant surface. To accomplish this and other advantages of the invention, an improved binder system is used in the production of the surface layers of a multi-layered board which combines an. excellent resin penetration inside the wood constituents of the board's surface layers, with a strength, durability and resistance to ambient water and moisture. The improved binder system used in the production of the board surface layers according to this invention involves contacting wood pieces with a binder composition comprised of a curable powdery aldehyde resin and a curable isocyanate resin in the substantial absence of free water to provide a composite mixture that can be formed into a surface layer for assembly and lamination together with other wood and resin composite layers.

  • Patent number: 6419174
Abstract: Abrasive compositions comprised of water-insoluble abrasive polishing agents suspended in a liquid medium in combination with humectant, and methods for making same. The inventive abrasive compositions are rheologically stable, settling-resistant, and re-agglomeration resistant, even during and after transport and/or storage before end-use, such as incorporation into dentifrice formulations or other oral cleaning compositions. The high settling-resistance of the inventive abrasive composition makes it possible to avoid the need before end use for temporary stabilizers such as inorganic suspending agents (e.g., clays, fumed silicas) or organic binders (e.g., polysaccharides). Also, the abrasive compositions contain abrasive particles having improved brightness as compared to abrasive particles made via drying and dry comminution processing.
