  • Patent number: 4923646
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the formation of polymer fibrids. These fibrids are produced by the mixing of superheated water and melted polymer and by passing this mixture through a bank of capillary tubes. The mixture becomes elongated in the capillary tubes and exits those tubes through a nozzle into an expansion chamber where they form fibrids. The fibrids are cooled by the evaporation of liquid water after expansion.

  • Patent number: 4908246
Abstract: A present invention provides a microwave interactive laminate and a process for brush deactivation of such a laminate. A film, coated with a microwave interactive layer is provided. A desired portion of the microwave interactive layer is coated with a mask layer and the entire assembly is then exposed to abrasion means. The coated and un-coated areas are subjected to the application of mechanical forces to form discontinuities in the microwave interactive layer. That portion of the microwave interactive layer that was coated remains interactive with microwave radiation and is a heating area while the un-coated area is deactivated.

  • Patent number: 4883936
Abstract: A patterned microwave interactive element and laminate including a patterned microwave interactive element for use in forming food packaging materials that may be employed to store and subsequently cook the food stored therein are provided. The pattern of the microwave interactive element is selected to focus the heat generated to predetermined areas of the food contained in the packaging. Areas where the microwave interactive element has been deactivated may be formed by a variety of methods, such as by demetallization, by the application of an inactivating chemical, by mechanical means and the like, to create a preselected pattern of inactive areas relative to the active areas, thereby controlling the temperatures produced in different sections of the packaging material. Optimum browning and/or crisping of the microwave heated food product may be achieved by selecting a pattern of microwave interactive and inactive areas tailored to specific food products.

  • Patent number: 4863785
Abstract: A nonwoven composite material comprising a meltblown fabric layer of a thermoplastic polymer sandwiched between two prebonded, spunbonded reinforcing fabric layers of a thermoplastic polymer, all continuously-bonded together to form a composite material. The preferred thermoplastic polymer for both the meltblown and spunbonded layers is polypropylene. The nonwoven composite material contains a minimal number of loose fibers, is highly resistant to the penetration of liquids and would also be expected to exhibit good abrasion resistance, while maintaining tear resistance and softness comparable to non-prebonded materials characterized by discrete bonding patterns. The nonwoven composite material is especially useful as a sterilization wrap for surgical and other health care items.
