  • Patent number: 5078274
Abstract: A system and process for sizing wood chips to provide a flow of wood chips which are acceptable for feeding to a digester of a pulping system. A flow management screen station is provided which divides an incoming unacceptable flow into two fractional flows, neither of which is acceptable for feeding to the digester. One of the output flows from the flow management screen is concentrated in oversized and overthick chips compared to the incoming flow. The other output flow is concentrated in undersized chips and particles compared to the incoming flow. The output flows from the flow management screen are then fed to second and third screening stations which separate "overs" from the respective flows to provide acceptable flows to the digester.

  • Patent number: 5066348
Abstract: A flannelized film and a method of making a flannelized film are disclosed. Layers of plastic film are fed between two rollers meeting at a nip, the contiguous surfaces of the layers being coated with an adhesive or comprising a heat-softened coextruded layer. A layer of creped tissue comprising cellulosic fibers is laminated between the contiguous surfaces of the layers of plastic film to form an intermediate laminate structure. The cellulosic fibers of the intermediate laminate structure are split at the exit side of the nip such that a portion of the cellulosic fibers is adhered to each plastic layer and has components extending in a direction substantially perpendicular with respect to the plane of the plastic film. This gives the plastic film the look and feel of flannel for improving the aesthetics of disposable absorbent products such as diapers, feminine napkins and underpads.

  • Patent number: 5045330
Abstract: An improved container for use in microwave cooking includes an insert which maintains a microwave interactive material in contact with a food product during cooking. The isnert includes flaps or wing sections which bias a central panel towards the food, with the microwave interactive material associated with the central panel. To ease in handling prior to and during packaging, an adhesive restrains the bias flaps until the adhesive is at least partially melted during cooking. The insert may be arranged to prevent excessive bowing or curling of the central panel, and to improve venting or draining of fluids from the food product.

  • Patent number: 5042231
Abstract: An apparatus for folding and filling a plurality of cartons erected from a plurality of collapsed carton tubes includes an end flap alignment device attached to the conveying and folding mechanism of the apparatus. The end flap alignment device folds one of the bottom end flaps of the collapsed carton tube inwardly and in the same motion folds the top end flap which is also provided on the bottom of the carton tube outwardly so that the bottom end flap and the top end flap are aligned in the same plane. The end flap alignment device comprises a generally U-shaped fork comprising a base attached to a plate and two rods each connected at one end thereof to the base. The plate is attached to a reciprocable slide of the apparatus by a pivot rod. One end of the pivot rod is connected to a cam, which rides in a cam track. As the slide is reciprocated, the plate, including fork, is pivoted about the pivot rod.

  • Patent number: 5019406
Abstract: A substantially farinaceous, fiber-containing batter to produce a battered and fried food having reduced lipid retention and increased moisture content after frying. The preferred fibrous additive for this purpose is powdered cellulose; however, various dietary fibers such as oat fiber, soy fiber, pea fiber, or sugar beet fiber, to name only a few, may be used to achieve the same purpose. More specifically, the fibrous additive is preferably present in the batter in an amount of about 0.3-3.0% by weight of the batter having an average fiber length of from about 50-500 microns. The addition of fiber to a batter used for frying will allow food producers to provide a healthier fried food item which will be more appealing to a health conscious consumer. Moreover, the fiber additive can also enhance the appearance of the fried food by providing a golden yellow color after frying, rather than a non-uniform brown color containing brown and black batter particles.
