Abstract: The folding blade spindle of a folding drum is rotatably driven by a single drive train that utilizes only one gear drive pair. The folding drum itself is rotated by a separate drive assembly. The use of only one gear drive pair for the folding blade spindle drive substantially reduces play in the folding blade and promotes accurate folding of printed products.
Abstract: A rubber blanket unit is structured having an underlying support plate with angled end legs, and an overlying rubber blanket with leading and trailing ends. The rubber blanket unit is secured to a blanket cylinder by insertion of the end legs into a thin cylinder slit. The rubber blanket ends are formed each having a reduced thickness and each further having a closure element. The leading and trailing blanket end closures cooperate to form an essentially seamless rubber blanket when the blanket unit is in place. The blanket ends are not dislodged by mechanical or chemical cleaning.
Abstract: The actual position of a leading edge of a transversely folded signature is detected. This actual position detection event is used to trigger an instantaneous measurement of the actual angular position of the gripper system used for receiving the signature. If the leading edge of the signature is predicted to arrive at the gripper system of the receiving cylinder at other than the appropriate time, the speed of the receiving cylinder is corrected.
Abstract: The two beveled ends of a sheet-shaped flexible support, such as a printing plate, are inserted in a slit in a plate cylinder. A bore extends laterally adjacent the slit and carries an inflatable hose. The hose can be inflated to apply a holding force against the plate ends positioned in the cylinder slit.
Abstract: A rotary printing press cylinder mounting utilizes a bearing positioned in an annular bushing and separating the bushing into two chambers. A liquid lubricant is fed directly to the bearing by a feed pipe. A separating wall extends radially inwardly adjacent an inbound side of the bearing. Any lubricant that moves past the separating wall is collected in the inbound chamber and drains to the outboard chamber for return to a sump.
Abstract: The position of the edges of a web or sheet is determined by using an optical system in conjunction with a photoelectric receiver. The location of the sheet or web edge can be measured accurately even if the edge has various anomalies. The optical system provides different images of the web or sheet edge in two directions.
Abstract: A printing system for a multi-color web-fed rotary printing press utilizes a plurality of printing system units that are arranged in a vertical array. Each printing system unit includes a left printing portion, a right printing portion, and a central printing portion. The left and the right portions are supported in left and right shiftable frames which are shiftable horizontally with the respect to a center frame that supports the center portions of the printing system units.
Abstract: A funnel folding roller pair cooperate to form a folding roller gap in a longitudinal paper web fold former. The folding rollers also act as supports for paper web draw-in guide belts. Each folding roller is comprised of spaced folding roller elements which are spaced apart by belt guides for the paper web draw-in guide belts. Each funnel folding roller is shiftable under the control of a computer to set a desired folding roller gap spacing.
Abstract: The amount of a dampening agent applied to a printing unit is regulated by sensing the light reflected from several unprinted areas of a web that has passed through the printing unit. The reflectance of a center blank strip is used as a reference and the reflectance of adjacent strips are compared to this reference. Dampening fluid is regulated on the basis of this comparison.
Abstract: A device for mounting, removing and transporting an easily bendable device, such as a printing plate, to and from a plate cylinder includes a printing plate preparation device which supports the plate, and a cross arm with a plate gripper and pressing assembly. A gripper portion of the plate gripper and pressing assembly acts on the plate and is movable toward and away from a suspension strip of a cylinder. The plate gripper and pressing assembly can be moved to a parked position where it is out of the way and is shielded from contaminants.

Abstract: A flexible plate is securable to a cylinder by insertion of fastening tabs, provided on beveled or angled ends of the plate, into cooperatively shaped end positioned pockets on the cylinder surface. The pockets may be formed by insert strips that utilize spaced tines to define the individual pockets.
Abstract: A cylinder in a rotary printing press is coupled to a driving wheel or gear by the engagement of two coupling disks. One of the disks is shiftable into coupling engagement with the other disk by application of a pressure medium to a work cylinder. A control valve is carried by the shiftable disk and limits the force of the pressure medium by use of a bleed passage that is closed only when coupling has been accomplished. The force of the pressure medium is at a higher level when coupling has been fully completed.
Abstract: The beveled ends of a flexible printing plate are clamped in a cylinder slot by a plurality of spring teeth that are receivable cutouts in the plate beveled ends. The spring teeth are part of a comb plate that is supported by a rotatable clamping lever. These teeth will also function as plate end ejectors when the clamping spindle is rotated in a plate end ejecting direction.
Abstract: A cutting device for transversely severing a printed web into signatures utilizes a collection and counter-cylinder, in cooperation with a cutting cylinder support that carries two cutting cylinders. Each cutting cylinder is rotatable with respect to the cutting cylinder support. These two cutting cylinders are also both axially shiftable on the cutting support cylinder to vary the lengths of the signatures being cut.
Abstract: A drawing roller pair of a web-fed rotary printing press receives a web that is to be conveyed. The axial spacing distance between the two drawing rollers is adjustable by an adjusting spindle. At least one of the rollers carries a resilient transport element whose effective radius will be reduced if the two rollers are moved closer to each other. This will reduce the transport speed of the resilient transport element.
Abstract: A device for fastening a rubber blanket unit to a blanket cylinder utilizes a rubber blanket secured to the surface of a support plate which is provided with beveled ends. These ends are insertable into a narrow slit in the cylinder and are held in the slit by pressure elements. The beveled support plate end lateral surfaces are in contact with each other.
Abstract: A pair of partial paper web receiving superstructure units are placed above a transverse folding unit in a folding apparatus. Either a drawing unit or a longitudinal folder and its associated folder hopper inlet can be placed between the superstructure units and the transverse folder. Use of the two superstructure units allows the folding apparatus to have a low structural height.
Abstract: A drawing roller drive for the conveyance of a web in a rotary printing press utilizes a differential gear to accomplish a very exact change in the speed of the drawing roller. A single drive shaft and a single power take-off shaft are aligned coaxially with respect to each other. The differential gear arrangement includes a ball race gear and a downstream tension shaft gear.
Abstract: A device for fastening a rubber blanket unit to a blanket cylinder utilizes a rubber blanket secured to the surface of a support plate which is provided with beveled ends. These ends are insertable into a narrow slit in the cylinder and are held in the slit by pressure elements. A plurality of resilient ejectors are supported in this cylinder slit and have free ends which support a filler strip. The filler strip closes the gap between the blanket ends when the rubber blanket is attached to the blanket cylinder.
