  • Patent number: 4367360
Abstract: A method is disclosed for extracting sym-octahydroanthracene (s-OHA) from a product isomer mixture formed by the aluminum chloride catalyzed isomerization of sym-octahydrophenanthrene (s-OHP). Isolation of the s-OHA product isomer is accomplished by contacting the reaction product mixture with a specified liquid hydrocarbon solvent into which the s-OHA product isomer and unconverted s-OHP isomer dissolve and separate from a residue. The undissolved residue comprises a complex made up of aluminum chloride catalyst and small amounts of the s-OHA and s-OHP isomers. This catalyst complex may be recycled into a fresh starting mixture of s-OHP isomer for catalysis of a subsequent s-OHP isomerization reaction.

  • Patent number: 4360404
Abstract: Enclosure and exhaust apparatus is provided to enhance control and removal of coke-side emissions during a push in the operation of a coke oven battery. The gaseous and entrained particulate emissions are initially confined to a first longitudinally extending containment zone where the emissions are directed, under the influence of its gaseous thermal drive, upwardly and laterally outwardly away from the coke-side face of the battery. The emissions are then transferred, at the peak of the first containment zone, laterally, through a gas expansion throat, into a second longitudinally extending containment zone that is adjacent and parallel to the first containment zone. Contemporaneously with entering the second containment zone, a portion of the emissions is removed therefrom through an exhaust conduit located at the upper reaches or peak portion of the second containment zone.

  • Patent number: 4331448
Abstract: The novel gasification reactor comprises a vertically oriented chamber with an upper pyrolysis section, a lower feed opening, and a primary combustion section. A lateral passage on each side and near the top of said primary combustion section each communicates with a separate secondary reaction chamber where a partially reacted feed is further reacted to form the product gas. In each passageway is a venturi nozzle or preferably a plurality of nozzles which accelerates the gas carrying entrained carbonaceous materials to produce a swirling curvilinear motion in the secondary reaction chambers. The reactor is fed by means of a plurality of hoppers and screw conveyors whereby the flow is regulated and positively fed both by gravity and the screw conveyors into rotary valve cavities in which counter rotating valves travel. The valves feed a piston which charges the reactor.

  • Patent number: 4325841
Abstract: Gel-time drift may be reduced in promoted polyester resin systems by incorporation of an amine salt in accordance with the disclosed compositions and methods. The amine salt is a salt-like reaction product of an amine and a carboxylic acid-containing moiety. For free-amine type promoted resin systems, an amine salt may be substituted for the amine promotor to provide a low-energy curable polyester resin system having the advantages of a promoted system as well as being stabilized against gel-time drift. Comparative data show suppression of gel-time drift of resin samples containing an amine salt to as low as 7 percent of gel-time drift of counterpart free-amine promoted resin system samples.
