Abstract: A received total wideband power (61A) in a wireless communications system is measured a number of times during a time interval. Preferably, also code powers ((C/I)i) are measured, directly or indirectly. A probability distribution of a first power quantity (63A, 63B), typically total received power is estimated from the set of measurements, preferably using Kalman filtering techniques, and preferably also a probability distribution of a second power quantity (62A, 62B) related to noise and interference signals. A conditional probability distribution of a noise rise measure to be determined is based at least on the probability distribution of the total power (63A, 63B). From that conditional probability distribution, a value of the noise rise measure is calculated.
Abstract: A method of estimating the quality of speech information associated with a voice call over a communication system comprising a core network and an access network where speech information is carried between the access network and the core network and within the core network in frames. The method comprises determining a rate of frame loss for frames transported between the access network and the core network and/or within the core network, and mapping the rate of frame loss to a quality estimation value using data collected by simulating frame loss on representative speech samples and determining quality estimation values for the damaged speech samples.

Abstract: With a nonparametric G-Rake receiver, combining weights may be determined using a nonparametric mechanism in multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) scenarios. In an example embodiment, a method for a receiving device having a nonparametric G-Rake receiver entails calculating an impairment covariance matrix and determining combining weights. More specifically, the impairment covariance matrix is calculated based on a pilot channel using a nonparametric mechanism in a MIMO scenario in which a code-reuse interference term exists. The combining weights are determined for the nonparametric G-Rake receiver responsive to the impairment covariance matrix and by accounting for the code-reuse interference term.

Abstract: A base station in an OFDMA system which determines a modulation and coding scheme to use for a packet of a certain size to be transmitted by a Mobile Station. The base station schedules transmissions by mobile stations and transmits packets. The base station includes a processing unit which determines a number of time-frequency resources required to transmit the packet for a modulation and coding scheme, determines an SINR based on the number of time-frequency resources used and available power at the mobile station, determines a transmission rate as a ratio of the packet size transmitted to the number of time-frequency resources used, sets a rate to zero if the determined SINR is lower than a threshold SINR required for the modulation and coding scheme, and selects the modulation and coding scheme with a highest transmission rate. The base station includes a memory storing modulation and coding schemes.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for identifying correct peaks in outputs of matched filters in user equipment for communication systems are provided. A received signal is correlated with a replica of a synchronization signal, thereby producing a correlation output signal. Peaks are detected in the correlation output signal. The peak is tested at a plurality of predetermined locations that are based on properties of the synchronization signal, thereby producing a plurality of peak test signals. The maximum of the peak test signals is determined.
