  • Patent number: 4019290
Abstract: A rain gutter is disclosed which can be deployed in an upward rain collecting position and downwardly in a discharge position as well as a storage position underneath the eaves of a house through hinge members attached to the gutter. A member is attached to the gutter which is operable from ground level to deploy the gutter either upwardly or downwardly and also to secure the gutter in an upward or downward position thereby eliminating the need of changing the upward or downward position of the gutter by using a ladder to reach the gutter. The gutter is especially useful in cold climates where gutters not only have to be cleaned but additionally have to be protected against ice and snow accumulation which tends to pull the gutter away from the side of the building and is also a source of wet rot since the accumulation of ice and snow directs water from a roof into the area behind the gutter.

  • Patent number: 4016654
Abstract: A range finder is disclosed comprising a tube having an eye opening, an object opening and a sight divided into sections, each section having a sight line or a plurality of sight lines with designated ranges next to each sight line. This arrangement of sight lines allows for the placement of a plurality of easily readable ranges on a relatively small sight. The clustering of sight lines one on top of the other the full height of the sight makes it difficult to use a range finder without some eye strain. The arrangement of sight lines disclosed in the present invention obviates this problem but still allows for the placement of a sufficient number of sight lines so that the range finder is effective over a wide range of distances.

  • Patent number: 4015689
Abstract: An elevator safety construction in which detent means is provided to block any elevator from falling more than one floor in free fall from such accidents as breakage of the supporting lift cables of the elevator in its shaft. Each floor of the building has its own safety blocking brace normally extending into the path of the descending elevator to block its path therepast. Timing mechanism times the speed of the elevator car and as long as it is lower than the predetermined car descent speed, each of the successive blocking braces is withdrawn, allowing the car to descend successively past each brace. If, however, the descent speed of the car is excessive, then lower braces are not withdrawn and the car cannot move past them, thus blocking crashes and injuries or fatalities to occupants.

  • Patent number: 4015608
Abstract: A laryngectomy lung protector is disclosed comprising breathing apparatus which is insertable in the throat in the region of the larynx and is sealed to the throat by means of an adjustable seal encircling and slidably placed on the apparatus which can be moved toward or away from the throat. The apparatus is a hollow frusto-cone, the base of which is sealed and the frustum end of which is inserted in the throat. By moving the cone inwardly or outwardly the diameter inserted in an opening in the throat can be adjusted. Valved air inlet and outlet passages in the cone allow passage of air into and out of an opening in the throat through the frustum end. The inlet valve is connected to a tank containing compressed air or oxygen. A breathing regulator valve may also be used in combination with the tank.

  • Patent number: 4013145
Abstract: A vehicle hill holder such as a wheel chock is disclosed comprising a pair of blocks which have opposable ends, one block having a pair of springs pivotally secured to opposite sides thereof that swing in a direction towards the second block. The free ends of the springs are removable insertable into a lever mounted on the second block, the fulcrum of the lever being in a plane above the base of the blocks and above the end of the first block where the springs are pivotally secured. The lever is depressed in an arc towards the base of the second block and thereby stretches the spring forcing the blocks towards one another to secure a wheel positioned between the blocks. The chocks are separated by raising the lever to release spring tension followed by removing the springs from the lever after which the blocks may be pulled apart from one another.
