Abstract: Computer systems and computer-implemented methods for modifying a machine learning network, such as a deep neural network, to introduce judgment to the network are disclosed. A “combining” node is added to the network, to thereby generate a modified network, where activation of the combining node is based, at least in part, on output from a subject node of the network. The computer system then trains the modified network by, for each training data item in a set of training data, performing forward and back propagation computations through the modified network, where the backward propagation computation through the modified network comprises computing estimated partial derivatives of an error function of an objective for the network, except that the combining node selectively blocks back-propagation of estimated partial derivatives to the subject node, even though activation of the combining node is based on the activation of the subject node.
Abstract: In one aspect, a gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) system is disclosed herein. In some embodiments, the GC-IMS system includes a GC column comprising an inlet and an outlet, and a sample delivery system in fluid connection with the inlet of the GC column and configured to provide a sample to the GC column. The GC column is configured to process the sample and produce a processed sample at the outlet. The GC-IMS system may also include an IMS tube. In some embodiments, the IMS tube includes a sample inlet in fluid communication with the outlet of the GC column, a wall that includes an orifice, and an outlet. The sample inlet may be configured to receive a portion of the processed sample. The IMS tube may be configured to analyze a second portion of pressurized gas.
Abstract: An ontology matching system performs operations to refine a natural language processing (NLP) model that encodes terms of a first hierarchical ontology and of a second hierarchical ontology as embeddings in a latent space. The operations include performing at least a first round of triplet loss training to decrease separation between select pairs of the embeddings sampled from the different ontologies that satisfy a first hierarchical relation while increasing separation between other pairs of the embeddings that do not satisfy the first hierarchical relation. The system then determines, from the refined NLP model, a stable matching scheme that matches each term in the first hierarchical ontology with a corresponding term of the second hierarchical ontology. Responsive to receiving terms of the first hierarchical ontology from an application, the system uses the stable matching scheme to map each of the terms to corresponding terms of the second hierarchical ontology.

Abstract: This application describes techniques for testing fiber optic telecommunication systems, such as undersea fiber optic cable systems. Testing terminals may be deployed at a location of terminating equipment for a fiber optic cable. The testing terminals may be operated remotely. The testing terminals may be configured to programmatically test the cable by loading one or more tests and automatically configure the cable's transmitters and receivers based on predetermined loading schemes selected based on the tests to be performed. The testing terminals may iterate over channels and fiber pairs of the cable and may use back-to-back tests to remove artifacts from test results. Using the described techniques, a cable's channels and fiber pairs can be fully characterized in the amount of time afforded for a typical testing schedule, which was not generally possible using conventional testing.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure relate to controlling a vehicle having an autonomous driving mode. For instance, that the vehicle is approaching a crosswalk may be determined. A set of segments may be identified for the crosswalk. A set of potential occluded pedestrians may be generated. Each potential occluded pedestrian of the set is assigned a speed characteristic and a segment. The segments of the set of potential occluded pedestrians may be updated over time using the assigned speed characteristics. Sensor data from a perception system of the vehicle is received, and one or more potential occluded pedestrians an having an updated assigned segment corresponding to a segment that is visible to a perception system of the vehicle may be removed from the set of potential occluded pedestrians. After the removing, the set may be used to control the vehicle in the autonomous driving mode.
Abstract: Systems and methods are described for providing an interface and facilitating selection of sponsored content networks that provide sponsored content items. This may include providing, by a mediation server, a user interface to a publisher server, the user interface configured to provide access to data stored on the mediation server; receiving a metric associated with a rule for filtering content items associated with the publisher; applying the metric to a content network list associated with the publisher using the user interface to generate an updated content network list; and transmitting mediation code including the updated content network list to the publisher server, wherein the mediation code, when executed by a user device, (i) causes the user device to control display of content items according to the updated content network list and (ii) allows the user device to flag at least one content item for modifying the updated content network list.
Abstract: A method for reducing current ripple at an output of a power supply includes sensing an alternating current (AC) input voltage waveform; determining a correction factor for a switching frequency of the power supply based on the sensed AC input voltage; and applying the correction factor to the switching frequency of the power supply to modify the power supply switching frequency. A modification of the switching frequency synchronizes the switching frequency of the power supply to the AC input voltage waveform.
