  • Patent number: 12234090
Abstract: A metal detector is used with a receptacle to receive refuse. The metal detector includes a body defining an opening, a controller, and a coil wound around the opening. The controller detects changes to a magnetic field generated by the coil when an object comprised of a metallic material that is located proximate the coil interacts with the magnetic field and induces a voltage within the coil. A capacitive sensor is mounted to the body and communicates with the controller. The controller is configured to detect the object located within the opening based on a proximity signal produced by the capacitive sensor when the object interacts with an electrical field of the capacitive sensor. When the controller determines that the object is comprised of a metallic material and disposed within the opening based on the induced voltage and the proximity signal, the metal detector correspondingly produces an alarm.

  • Patent number: 12236639
Abstract: Example embodiments allow for fast, efficient detection and pose estimation of objects based on point clouds, depth images/maps, or other depth information about a scene that may contain the objects. Embodiments include translating and rotating the depth image to bring individual points of the depth image to a standard orientation and location so as to improve performance when an object is near the periphery of the field of view. Some disclosed embodiments include applying a random forest to perform pose estimation. By using the decision trees or other fast methods, it can be advantageous to perform pose estimation a plurality of times prior to identifying whether a particular object is actually present in a scene. Prospective pose estimates can be combined with models of the objects in order to evaluate whether the object is present in the scene.

  • Patent number: 12238232
Abstract: Systems and methods for blockchain-based asset authentication are described. The disclosed embodiments leverage the traceability and immutability of blockchains (or distributed ledgers, in general) to enable the authentication and ownership of assets, e.g., luxury goods. In an example, this is achieved by first pairing an authentication chip with a physical product, and writing a transaction correlated with the first pairing to a blockchain. The product being acquired (reacquired) results in the blockchain being updated (e.g., an updated transaction being written to the blockchain) and the (subsequent) owner being provided with a digital passport that can be added to the owner's digital Web3 wallet. The described embodiments advantageously enable digital identities to be associated with physical goods, which adds value for customers making a long-term investment in a luxury good, and promotes sustainability and transparency in manufacturing and retail processes.

  • Patent number: 12238324
Abstract: Innovations in flexible reference picture management are described. For example, a video encoder and video decoder use a global reference picture set (“GRPS”) of reference pictures that remain in memory, and hence are available for use in video encoding/decoding, longer than conventional reference pictures. In particular, reference pictures of the GRPS remain available across random access boundaries. Or, as another example, a video encoder and video decoder clip a reference picture so that useful regions of the reference picture are retained in memory, while unhelpful or redundant regions of the reference picture are discarded. Reference picture clipping can reduce the amount of memory needed to store reference pictures or improve the utilization of available memory by providing better options for motion compensation. Or, as still another example, a video encoder and video decoder filter a reference picture to remove random noise (e.g., capture noise due to camera imperfections during capture).
