Abstract: Systems and methods for determining operation of a cylinder deactivating/reactivating device are disclosed. In one example, a warm engine is rotated without being supplied fuel to determine the presence or absence of valve actuator degradation. Degraded valve actuators may be determined when there is a lack of a temperature rise in the engine exhaust system.
Abstract: Various aspects for scaling an availability of information are disclosed. In one aspect, a response performance associated with responding to data consumption requests is monitored. A characterization of the response performance is ascertained, and a scaling of resources is facilitated based on the characterization. In another aspect, a data consumption status indicative of data consumed is ascertained. Here, a scalability interface is provided, which displays aspects of the status, and receives an input from a content provider. An allocation of resources is then modified in response to the input. In yet another aspect, a response performance associated with responding to data consumption requests is monitored. An application programming interface (API) call is generated based on a characterization of the response performance, and transmitted to a content provider. An API response is then received from the content provider indicating whether a scaling of resources for hosting the data was performed.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure relate to delivery systems including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). For instance, a UAV may have one or more computing devices. These computing devices may be configured to receive sensor data for a predetermined delivery area and use the sensor data to identify one or more grid cells of a grid corresponding to a map of the predetermined delivery area. The identified grid cells correspond to locations acceptable for delivery by the UAV. The computing devices may also be configured to receive, from a mobile receptacle unit (MRU), information identifying a set of grid cells of the grid identified by the MRU as being acceptable for delivery, determine a delivery location by identifying a common grid cell between the identified one or more grid cells and the set of grid cells, and send the common grid cell to the MRU in order to attempt a delivery.
Abstract: A method of recovering metals from electronic waste comprises providing a powder comprising electronic waste in at least a first reactor and a second reactor and providing an electrolyte comprising at least ferric ions in an electrochemical cell in fluid communication with the first reactor and the second reactor. The method further includes contacting the powders within the first reactor and the second reactor with the electrolyte to dissolve at least one base metal from each reactor into the electrolyte and reduce at least some of the ferric ions to ferrous ions. The ferrous ions are oxidized at an anode of the electrochemical cell to regenerate the ferric ions. The powder within the second reactor comprises a higher weight percent of the at least one base metal than the powder in the first reactor. Additional methods of recovering metals from electronic waste are also described, as well as an apparatus of recovering metals from electronic waste.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a self-describing fiducial includes a communication element that optically communicates navigation-aiding information. The navigation-aiding information may include a position of the self-describing fiducial with respect to one or more coordinate systems and the communication element communicates the navigation-aiding information to one or more navigating objects in the vicinity of the self-describing fiducial. In another embodiment, the communication element is further configured to communicate supplementary information describing a spatial relationship between the self-describing fiducial and the surrounding environment.

Abstract: In a nitrogen generator, multiple, concurrent gas pressure monitors constantly and simultaneously monitor gas pressures at key points in the nitrogen generation process, and a controller generates an alarm when the pressure at any point falls below a respective predetermined pressure level, and remains there for longer than a respective predetermined duration. In some embodiments, a run time of the nitrogen separation unit is additionally monitored. Additionally, in some embodiments, if the output pressure of nitrogen gas falls below a predetermined pressure level, a bypass route is activated to route compressed air directly to the output, thus sacrificing nitrogen gas purity but maintaining required minimum pressure for downstream systems.
Abstract: A method for solving a computational problem reducible to a problem of summing probabilities over all solutions to a decision problem includes using a quantum computer to identify a coarse estimate of a sum of the probabilities over all solutions to the decision problem. The method also includes using the quantum computer to identify a finer estimate of the sum. The finer estimate is determined using a quantum amplitude estimation algorithm in which a number m in a number register controls a number R×m of quantum amplitude amplification iterations to be applied to a solution space register (where R is a specified multiple) and a quantum Fourier transform is applied to the number register. The method further includes using the coarse estimate to de-alias the finer estimate over all solutions. In addition, the method includes outputting a solution to the computational problem determined using the de-aliased finer estimate.
Abstract: Configurations for a power module having a flexible circuit assembly and corresponding method. The flexible circuit assembly has at least one electrically conductive portion. A first plurality of cells is placed adjacent to one another to form a first cell layer, the first cell layer being positioned on a first side of the flexible circuit assembly. Each of the first plurality of cells has a respective cell body with at least four respective edges. The first plurality of cells has respective cell tabs, including a respective first tab and a respective second tab both extending from one of the at least four respective edges. The flexible circuit assembly is configured to be aligned with the first cell layer such that a voltage sensing circuit joint is concurrently completed when the respective cell tabs of the first cell layer are joined to respective captured portions of the flexible circuit assembly.
Abstract: Scenes can be imaged under low-light conditions using flash photography. However, the flash can be irritating to individuals being photographed, especially when those individuals' eyes have adapted to the dark. Additionally, portions of images generated using a flash can appear washed-out or otherwise negatively affected by the flash. These issues can be addressed by using a flash at an invisible wavelength, e.g., an infrared and/or ultraviolet flash. At the same time a scene is being imaged, at the invisible wavelength of the invisible flash, the scene can also be imaged at visible wavelengths. This can include simultaneously using both a standard RGB camera and a modified visible-plus-invisible-wavelengths camera (e.g., an “IR-G-UV” camera). The visible and invisible image data can then be combined to generate an improved visible-light image of the scene, e.g., that approximates a visible light image of the scene, had the scene been illuminated during daytime light conditions.
