Abstract: This invention relates to a process for producing electron deficient olefins, such as 2-cyanoacrylates, in a polar solvent, such as an ionic liquid.
Abstract: The present invention relates to cationically curable compositions for curing on a surface comprising a cationically curable component, an accelerator species comprising at least one vinyl ether functional group and an initiator component capable of initiating cure of the cationically curable component. The initiator comprises at least one metal salt, which is chosen so that it is reduced at the surface, and where the standard reduction potential of the initiator component is greater than the standard reduction potential of the surface, and where when the composition is placed in contact with the surface, the metal salt of the initiator component of the composition is reduced at the surface, thereby initiating cure of the cationically curable component of the composition. The accelerator species comprising at least one vinyl ether functional group greatly enhances the rate of cure.

Abstract: The present invention relates to radically curable compositions for curing on a surface comprising a radically curable component, and an initiator component capable of initiating cure of the radically curable component. The initiator comprises at least one metal salt and a free radical generating component. The metal salt of the composition is chosen so that it is reduced at the surface, where the standard reduction potential of the metal salt is greater than the standard reduction potential of the surface, and where when the composition is placed in contact with the surface, the metal salt is reduced at the surface, and interacts with the free radical generating component, thereby initiating cure of the radically curable component of the composition. No catalytic component is required in the composition for efficient curing.

Abstract: An apparatus (1) for the application of a composition curable by irradiation to a fastener (2) having: a conveyor (3) for conveying fasteners to an application station (5); an application station (10) comprising an applicator from which the composition is dispensed. The conveyor rotates the fasteners past the applicator for application of composition. The same or another conveyor (8) conveys the fasteners to an irradiation station (10) and rotates the fasteners for irradiation thereof. The irradiation station irradiates and thus cures the composition applied to each fastener.

Abstract: This invention relates to novel iminium salts, which may be in the form of ionic liquids, and a process for producing electron deficient olefins, such as 2-cyanoacrylates, using such an iminium salt, for instance in the form of an ionic liquid.
Abstract: This invention relates to processes for producing electron deficient olefins, such as 2-cyanoacrylates, using an iminium salt, and if desired contacting the reaction byproduct with alkali to generate an amine and separating that amine therefrom.

Abstract: A nozzle assembly (3, 20) with a re-useable break off cap (20) for dispensing a product from a container (1). On a dispensing end (5) of the nozzle (3) a break-off cap (20) is integrally formed thereon and closes off the dispensing end (5) of the nozzle (3). The break-off cap (20) is removable by breaking a frangible connection (22) between the nozzle (3) and the break-off cap (20). Removing the break-off cap opens the dispensing end (5) of the nozzle (3) thereby allowing product to be dispensed through the nozzle (3). The break-off cap (20) removed from the nozzle (3) can then be re-engaged with the nozzle (3) to close off the dispensing end (5) thereby preventing further product from being dispensed. The cap can be attached to or removed from the nozzle (3) as often as a user requires. Packaging which includes a tray (111) or pouch into which the nozzle assembly (3, 20) and container (1) can be inserted.

Abstract: This invention relates to (meth)acrylate-based polymerizable compositions and adhesive systems prepared therefrom, which include a alkylated borohydride or tetraalkyl borane metal or ammonium salt and a polymerizable siloxane. The inventive compositions and adhesive systems are particularly well suited for bonding applications which involve at least one low energy bonding surface, for example, the polyolefins, polyethylene, and polypropylene.
Abstract: This invention relates to toughened cyanoacrylate compositions which exhibit improved peel strengths and fixture speeds. The toughened cyanoacrylate compositions include a toughening agent comprising poly(vinychloride-co-vinyl acetate) and poly(methylmethacrytlate).
Abstract: Quaternary boron salts are used as initiators of polymerisation in adhesive compositions for bonding low surface energy substrates such as polyolefins. The quaternary boron salts are of the formula I wherein R1 is C1-C10 alkyl, R2, R3 and R4, which may be the same or different, are, C1-C10 alkyl or C3-C10 cycloalkyl, phenyl, or phenyl-substituted C1-C10 alkyl or C3-C10 cycloalkyl, provided that any two of R1-R4 may optionally be part of a carbocyclic ring, and M+ is a metal ion or a quaternary ammonium ion. When M+ is a quaternary ammonium ion, the initiator may be used in a two-part composition having a (meth)acrylate monomer in both parts and the initiator compound in one part, the two parts being in a weight ratio of about 1:1.
