  • Patent number: 6398816
Abstract: A method for enhancing and/or increasing the efficiency of repair of tissues, primarily bone or cartilage, using genetically engineered cells has been developed. In the preferred embodiment, mesenchymal stem cells are isolated from periosteum tissue, and transfected with the gene encoding a growth factor for the particular cell type to be repaired. For example, for repair of bone, a gene (or genes) encoding bone morphogenic protein is transfected into periosteal cells. The transfected periosteal cells then express the bone morphogenic protein in culture to promote bone repair as a function of the expressed bone morphogenic protein. Cells can be transfected using any appropriate means, including viral vectors, as shown by the example, chemical transfectants, or physico-mechanical methods such as electroporation and direct diffusion of DNA.

  • Patent number: 6339885
Abstract: In the astrolabe herein, both the rete and the plate rotate, although around different centers. The stars are drawn onto the plate, and the coordinate system is represented by the rete. In contrast to the conventional astrolabe, where the stars and the coordinate system are projected onto a plane parallel with the earth's equator, the improved astrolabe projects stars and the coordinate system using a stereographic projection onto a plane parallel with the plane of the ecliptic. This projection puts the celestial pole at the center of the rete, and the line orthogonal to the ecliptic is projected onto the center of the plate, which points about 23.5 degrees off the earth's axis. As with a conventional astrolabe, the rete is rotated to represent the sidereal motion of the stars. In contrast to the conventional astrolabe, the plate may also be rotated to represent the precession of the earth's axis.

  • Patent number: 6340053
Abstract: Self-enclosing heat exchangers are made from stacked plates having raised peripheral flanges on one side of the plates and continuous peripheral ridges on the other side of the plates, so that when the plates are put together, fully enclosed alternating flow channels are provided between the plates. The plates have raised bosses defining fluid ports that line-up in the stacked plates to form manifolds for the flow of heat exchange fluids through alternate plates. Expanded metal turbulizers are located in the flow channels. The turbulizers have portions thereof crimped closed to control the flow inside the channels and prevent unwanted bypass flow.

  • Patent number: 6289106
Abstract: The present invention consists of an improved distortion reduction cap and center pole speaker assembly and an improved method of coupling the cap to a speaker center pole. The cap includes an axial flare which is stretched over and pressed into a corresponding axial gripping surface to provide a permanent coupling of the cap to a speaker center pole that does not vibrate or come loose and that eliminates air gaps between the cap and the center pole. The method of coupling the cap to the speaker center pole consists of forming the caps through known die cut stamping and forming a slightly raised corresponding axial gripping surface on the center pole of a speaker pole yoke assembly. The cap is placed over the center pole and then forced into a molding applicator tool.
