Abstract: The present invention provides an economical route to environmentally friendly polymeric coatings with a high content of raw materials from renewable resources. These polymeric coatings offer performance characteristics that are competitive with conventional coating systems. The unique polymers on which this invention is based are copolymers of triglyceride oils, such as soybean oil, linseed oil, or another natural oil, with a vinyl compound, such as an acrylate or methacrylate, or a vinyl aromatic monomer. The present invention more specifically discloses a water dispersible, self-crosslinkable prepolymer composition which is comprised of a triglyceride oil having appended thereto (1) hydroxyl groups, (2) epoxy groups, (3) moieties which contain at least one aldehyde group or at least one ketone group, and (4) moieties which contain at least one vinyl and/or substituted vinyl group. In one embodiment of this invention the moiety which contains at least one vinyl group is derived from maleic anhydride.
Abstract: The present invention relates to novel thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) compositions that have crystalline chain ends. The TPU compositions of the invention can provide improved resiliency, lower surface free energy, and/or reduced stickiness, while maintaining other desirable physical properties. The present invention also provides the described TPU compositions that are further grafted with vinyl alkoxysilane moieties allowing for crosslinked networks of the TPU compositions. The present invention also provides plasticizer-free, very soft TPU compositions without the processing difficulties often associated with such materials. The invention further provides means of reducing the surface tension of a TPU composition which can allow for improved blend compositions, and means of crosslinking the described TPU compositions.

Abstract: Thermoplastic polyurethanes, including those based on aliphatic isocyanates, are of great interest for industrial applications that require UV-stability. To overcome the low reactivity of some diisocyanates a catalyst is usually added to accelerate urethane formation. In most applications, organotin-based compounds are used, however, due to growing concerns about the toxicity of some of these organotin compounds, their use is being restricted and the need for alternative catalysts is growing. The thermoplastic polyurethanes described herein are made using tin-free catalysts while retaining the UV-stability and other properties required for many industrial applications.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a thermoplastic polyurethane which is comprised of the reaction product of (1) a hydroxyl terminated polyester intermediate, (2) a polyisocyanate, and (3) a glycol chain extender; wherein the hydroxyl terminated polyester intermediate is comprised of repeat units that are derived from 1,3-propylene glycol and a dicarboxylic acid; wherein the hydroxyl terminated polyester intermediate has a number average molecular weight from 500 to 10,000; and wherein the thermoplastic polyurethane includes hard segments that are the reaction product of the polyisocyanate and the glycol chain extender. This thermoplastic polyurethane is unique in that it has a greatly reduced tendency to bloom. This is highly desirable in applications where high clarity is desired because blooming causes articles containing the thermoplastic polyurethane to be hazy or foggy in appearance.
