Abstract: In a UMTS (universal mobile telecommunications system) based system, a wireless receiver comprises a convolutional decoder, a processor and memory. The convolutional decoder processes a received signal and provides a Yamamoto-Itoh (YI) metric to the processor. The processor (a) retrieves, from a look-up table stored in the memory, a compensation factor as a function of the YI metric value provided by the Viterbi decoder; (b) retrieves, from another look-up table stored in the memory, an initial BER estimate as a function of the YI metric; and (c) modifies the initial BER estimate with the retrieved compensation value to provide a BER estimate.
Abstract: An amplifier bias system and method has only reduced resonances at least throughout the envelope frequency of the signal to be amplified. Thus, the amplifier bias system can provide bias current to the amplifier with minimal voltage variations over the envelope frequency band, especially during signal peaks. For example, the amplifier bias system can be used as an amplifier gate or drain bias network where the amplifier bias system is coupled between the power supply and the gate or drain terminals of the amplifier. The amplifier bias system can include an amplifier bias filter having an impedance which is relatively low at least throughout the envelope frequency of the input signal and relatively high at radio frequency.
Abstract: A method is disclosed comprising placing a first device in an enclosure, placing a second device in the enclosure, sealing the enclosure, and after sealing the enclosure, causing the first device to exchange a key with the second device. After the key exchange, the first and second devices can be taken out of the enclosure and can use the key to communicate with each other securely and in an authenticated manner. The devices may be electronic devices or optical devices. The enclosure prevents electromagnetic radiation of a certain bandwidth from escaping and thus prevents an adversarial device from eavesdropping on communication between the first and second devices. The enclosure may include a filtering material such as a metal net. The enclosure may be, for example, a plastic bag or a glass container.
Abstract: A method for correcting the phase of a clock in a data receiver which receives a data flow representing different signal levels with logical high and low signal values and signal transitions positioned therebetween, wherein the positions of such signal transitions between respective two adjacent logical signal values are evaluated for correcting the phase of the clock. The position of a signal transition between a first pair of signal values on one level (11) or a second pair of signal values on the other level (00) is weighted stronger in the evaluation then the positions of signal transitions between adjacent single signal values (1,0) of different signal levels.

Abstract: A method for mapping a network, in accordance with the present invention, includes providing distance measurements between tracers in the network, determining routes along which the distance measurements are made, and creating a system of equations which links the distance measurements between the nodes with a sum of the delays between the nodes which comprise the routes. Additional information is extracted about distances of subpaths of the routes to provide additional details to a map of the network. The additional information provides a capability of estimation of distances between nodes without tracers.
Abstract: The system for interconnecting circuit-based terminal devices with packet-based terminal devices in a voice communication connection (packet-based terminal device addressing system) provides service capabilities that allow a calling party to address packet-based terminal devices without consuming telephone numbers. In this case, the calling party, using a circuit-based terminal device such as a traditional telephone or video telephone, initiates a call to a called party, using the called party's telephone number. The packet-based terminal device addressing system presumes that the owner of the packet-based terminal device also owns a circuit-based terminal device and therefore reuses the point of presence address of the circuit-based terminal device (telephone number) for the packet-based terminal device.
Abstract: A method for controlling data flow including: measuring an source specific incoming data rate of one source; comparing the source specific incoming data rate with a corresponding predetermined data rate; if the source specific incoming data rate exceeds the predetermined data rate, eliminating incoming data packets for reducing the source specific incoming data rate to be smaller than the predetermined data rate, if the source specific incoming data rate does not exceed the predetermined data rate, transmitting the incoming data packets to switching means, connected to said input port, characterised in that a backpressure warning signal (bpws) is generated if the source specific incoming data rate exceeds at least one of the at least one predetermined data rates and said generated backpressure warning signal is sent to a source of the incoming data packets. Hereby further transmission of data packets is prevented.

Abstract: A DPRAM is placed in the RF path before the digital to analog converter, to provide dynamic path gain compensation to the digital signal prior to conversion to an analog signal. The DPRAM stores corrections to the signal to compensate for amplitude losses in the signal arising from heat and non-linearities. The DPRAM has two sets of identical addresses. A logic switch, alternately directs an input signal to one of the two sets of addresses. Pre-calculated signal values which compensate for path gain are stored in one of the two sets of addresses in the DPRAM. The signal input to the DPRAM is directed to the other block. The value of the signal input to the DPRAM will determine the address to which the new value can be found. It is this new value which is actually input to the DAC and from which an analog signal is created.

Abstract: A coupler assembly for an optical backplane system having a backplane and two or more circuit packs connected to that backplane. Each circuit pack has an optical transceiver and the backplane has an optical pipe (e.g., an array of waveguides) adapted to guide optical signals between the transceivers of different circuit packs. A coupler assembly is provided for each transceiver to couple light between that transceiver and the optical pipe. Advantageously, the coupler assembly has a movable optical element that can accommodate possible misalignment between the backplane and the circuit pack. In one embodiment, the movable optical element is an array of MEMS mirrors, each mirror adapted to direct light between an optical transmitter or receiver and the corresponding waveguide of the optical pipe.

Abstract: A procedure for designing WDM optical networks provides both working circuits and protection circuits for carrying traffic demands between node pairs. The protection circuits are activated for the purpose of network recovery in case of a fault on a working circuit. Each protection circuit is link-disjoint, and preferably node-disjoint, from its corresponding working circuit. The network is subdivided into logically defined rings, such that each working and protection circuit lies on one or more of the rings. In particular embodiments of the invention, the joint routing of circuits is carried out so as to minimize the total length of the working and protection circuits according to a length that includes a weight for each link. The weight is selected to promote the efficient packing of optical fibers with wavelength channels.

Abstract: A system and method that provides lifeline service to DSL customers when a loss-of-power message is sent to the central office from an integrated access device on the customer premise. If a predetermined number of loss-of-power messages are received then power is provided to the integrated access device from the central office. To this end, a power supply at the central office provides power through an isolator circuit to a relay. The relay is connected through to the twisted pair to the integrated access device. The data connection may also be powered in this manner or, in order to save further wattage, the data connection may be disconnected for the duration of the power outage.
Abstract: In one embodiment, a waveguide lens of the invention has a pair of planar waveguides, e.g., a single-mode waveguide connected to a multimode waveguide. The widths of the two waveguides and the length of the multimode waveguide are selected such that particular mode coupling between the waveguides and multimode interference (MMI) effects in the multimode waveguide cause the latter to output a converging beam of light similar to that produced by a conventional waveguide lens. Advantageously, waveguide lenses of the invention may be used to implement low-loss, low-crosstalk waveguide crossings and/or compact waveguide turns. In addition, waveguide lenses of the invention can be readily and cost-effectively incorporated into waveguide devices designated for large-scale production.
