Abstract: A computer user interface generation system and method is disclosed, wherein computer user interfaces can be generated dynamically during activation of the computer application for which the generated user interface provides user access to the functional features of the application. The generated user interface may be a graphical user interface (GUI) that uses instances of various user interaction techniques. A user interface specification is provided in a configuration database for generating the user interface, and by changing the user interface specification in the configuration database, the user interface for the computer application can be changed during activation of the application.
Abstract: An apparatus includes a crystalline substrate having a top surface, a crystalline semiconductor layer located on the top surface, and a plurality of dielectric regions. The crystalline semiconductor layer includes group III-nitride and has first and second surfaces. The first surface is in contact with the top surface. The second surface is separated from the top surface by semiconductor of the crystalline semiconductor layer. The dielectric regions are located on the second surface. Each dielectric region is distant from the other dielectric regions and covers an end of an associated lattice defect. Each lattice defect threads the crystalline semiconductor layer.

Abstract: A method and system in accordance with the present invention greatly reduces the gain error due to Raman gain tilt for individual channels in an optical communication system during a transient event by determining a shift in average power (and thus wavelength) and using the determined shift to alter the average gain in the optical communication system. In various embodiments of the present invention, the average gain of the optical communication system is altered by altering the average gain of an amplifier in the optical communication system. In alternate embodiments of the present invention having an in-line optical filter, the average gain of the optical communication system may be altered by altering the filtering of the optical channels in the optical communication system.
Abstract: A method for preserving information from an airborne aircraft (10) includes receiving an activation signal, and in response thereto, establishing a call from the aircraft (10) to a ground support facility (210) over a wireless telecommunications network (200). Sounds within the aircraft (10) are monitored, and an audio signal reflecting the same is generated. Flight data from the aircraft (10) is obtained and encoded. The audio signal and encoded flight data are multiplexed to generate a combined output signal (300) which is transmitted via the call from the aircraft (10) to the ground support facility (210).

Abstract: A system and method for accessing registers of a PHY device in a network including an extended protocol software layer between the protocol and application layers, on the one hand, and the MAC driver, on the other hand. The extended protocol layer generates the PHY device register read and write commands and embeds them within standardized Ethernet data packets. The extended PHY device is adapted to distinguish these register read and write command packets from normal data packets and intercept and parse them to retrieve the commands. Likewise, the extended PHY device embeds the read and write acknowledgments in standardized Ethernet data packets that the extended protocol layer, in turn, can distinguish from normal Ethernet data packets and intercept and parse them to retrieve the acknowledgments.

Abstract: A message to be transmitted through a network is encrypted such that the resulting encrypted message has associated therewith a proof of correctness indicating that the message is of a type that allows decryption by one or more escrow authorities. Each of at least a subset of the servers of the network includes a module for checking the proof of correctness if the corresponding encrypted message passes through the corresponding server in being transmitted from a sender to a recipient through the network. The encrypted message is therefore transmitted through the network to the recipient such that in traversing the network the proof of correctness associated with the encrypted message is checked by a designated check module of at least one server of the network. If the check of the proof of correctness indicates that the proof is invalid, the module of the server performing the check may direct that the encrypted message be discarded.
Abstract: An asynchronous transfer mode network, in accordance with the present invention, includes a plurality of remote terminals remotely disposed relative to a central office. The remote terminals are connected by a ring with two paths. The ring transfers signals thereon in opposite directions relative to each path. The central office feeds duplicate signals on each path. Each remote terminal includes a first multiplexer for routing signals transferred on the ring to and from an asynchronous feeder multiplexer. The asynchronous feeder multiplexer is adapted to route components of downstream signals on a first path of the ring to a destination and to replace the components of the signals on the first path with copies of components of signals running in an opposite direction on a second path of the ring such that at any location in the network both paths provide all signals.

Abstract: A CDMA wireless communication system for communicating with wireless terminals. The system comprises a channel estimator for determining characteristics of the wireless channels of the wireless terminals. The channel characteristics are used by a code optimizer to assign spreading codes to the wireless terminals. In one embodiment, the code optimizer utilizes an iterative code optimization algorithm and maintains a processing set of wireless terminals. The code optimizer chooses target wireless terminals and performs a random code search in order to find an improved code for the target wireless terminal. The improved code found in the random code search is further improved by performing a gradient search of codes in the signal space in the vicinity of the improved code and by performing a gradient search of transmission delays. The improved codes are transmitted to the wireless terminals for use in reverse link communication.

Abstract: A receiver desensitization system sets the sensitivity of a receiver by injecting a desensitization signal appearing as noise onto a receive path of the receiver to adjust the noise power level relative to the power level of signals on the receive path. For example, a desensitization source provides a desensitization signal appearing as noise onto a desensitization path. An adjustable attenuator on the desensitization path adjusts the power level of the desensitization signal to provide a desired level of desensitization. The desensitization path is coupled to a receive path of a receiver, and the desensitization signal is injected into the receive path. The desensitization signal desensitizes the receiver by raising the noise power level relative to the signal power level on the receive path. The desensitization signal can be injecting into the receive path after a main amplifier on the receive path.

Abstract: Methods are disclosed for mitigating the impact of resource limitations caused by privileged use schemes, such as WPS and/or GETS, on non-privileged users of a communication system. In one embodiment, a resource controller or switch (#), responsive to receiving (202) an information request from a non-privileged user, retrieves (206, 214) information regarding the percentage or quantity of resources that are being used by privileged users. In one embodiment, upon determining (304) that resources are unavailable for a non-privileged user, a bid option (314) and/or queuing option (322) is offered so as to reduce occurrences of calls (or re-attempted calls) being terminated due to lack of resources.
Abstract: In an electronic device, plural circuit boards are plugged into respective connectors, or sockets, in a common backplane circuit board. The backplane maintains the flat circuit boards in fixed relation to one another. Each circuit board is provided with a respective optical transmitter and/or receiver to allow for the transmission of (typically digital) information via a high speed carrier in a light beam through unobstructed free space between the circuit boards. The circuit boards may also be provided with optical splitters and/or combiners as well as apertures to permit light signals to pass through the board's substrate to allow for communication between plural circuit boards. The circuit boards may further include small lenses and/or opaque elements to provide an optical path having selected physical characteristics.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for dynamic allocation of conferencing resources in a telecommunications system is provided. The method and apparatus provide for dynamic allocation of conferencing resources in two forms, first a predefined order of allocation of time slots for use in conferencing is described. This predefined order of allocation minimizes the risk that a conference will be interrupted if additional line cards are added to the system while the conference is in progress. The second form of dynamic allocation of resources involves locating and selecting the digital signal processing (DSP) resources to perform the conferencing function. For this allocation, the conference type is first identified. The conference will be determined to be a static, dynamic or critical conference by the CPU/Matrix card. Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus of transmit diversity that is backward compatible and does not significantly degrade performance in additive white guassan noise (AWGN) conditions using a transmission architecture that incorporates a form of phase sweep transmit diversity (PSTD) referred to herein as biased PSTD. Biased PSTD involves transmitting a signal and a frequency swept version of the same signal over diversity antennas at different power levels. By transmitting the two signals at different power levels, the depths of nulls normally seen in AWGN conditions when PSTD is utilized is reduced and performance degradation in AWGN conditions is mitigated.

Abstract: An antenna element is provided which responsive in multiple frequency bands, has symmetric beam patterns, and is easily and cheaply fabricated. The antenna element includes at least three conductive plates arranged in a stack At least one pair of adjacent plates contain apertures that are mutually aligned relative to the stacking direction. The antenna element further includes at least one air stripline arranged to create radiative electromagnetic excitations of the apertures when the stripline or striplines are energized by a suitable radiofrequency voltage source or sources.
Abstract: Communication between a service switching point (SSP) and an external (or stand alone) Intelligent Peripheral (IP) has not been defined by any of the standard bodies. ITU-T Q.1600 and ETSI 300 374-1 defines the network configuration of SCP, SSP and stand-alone IP units using SS7 ISUP connection, but ITU-T Q.1600 and ETSI 300 374-1 does not specify in detail the SS7 ISUP messages for bi-directional communication between a SSP and an IP unit. This invention details the message flow between a SCP, a SSP and an ISUP IP unit, especially in the messages between the SSP and IP unit using SS7 ISUP protocol. With the signaling method of the present invention, SCP can send INAP operations, such as PA, PCUI to instruct an external IP unit to play an announcement or collect user information, then an IP unit can send back the related operations back to SCP. In this case, the resource of the IP unit can be shared by other switches and SSPs in the network.
Abstract: A simulator and/or simulation process operates by receiving a message from a system; comparing the received message to information stored in a response file used to simulate system response; and simulating a response to the system by outputting a response stored in association with a stored message matching the received message. The response file includes at least one message, a message marker associated with each message, at least one response associated with each message, and an end-of-response marker associated with each response. At least two responses are stored in association with a message, and the at least two responses are sequentially output in response to sequential receipt of the message. As such, the simulator can reply to any message by looking up its associated response in the response file. If more than one associated response appears in the response file, receipt of identical messages will illicit sequential and differing responses.
Abstract: A method and communications receiver is disclosed that removes Doppler frequency shift in a spread spectrum communications signal. A pilot channel rake section has I and Q Doppler estimation channels for estimating the Doppler change in frequency based on a common pilot channel. A data channel rake section has I and Q data channels for receiving the Doppler change in frequency from the pilot channel rake section and canceling any Doppler error.
Abstract: A control system comprising an electrical circuit that produces distortion where the electrical circuit has a frequency band of operation. A pilot modulated carrier signal is frequency hopped about the frequency band of operation. The hopping pilot modulated carrier signal does not interfere with any signal applied to or generated by the electrical circuit as it is not at any time located within the frequency band of operation. Information obtained from the hopping pilot modulated carrier is provided to the control system which uses such information to cancel the distortion produced by the electrical circuit.
