  • Patent number: 6819930
Abstract: Allocation of a wireless communications system channel resource is managed by utilizing traffic segment allocation. This is realized by partitioning the channel resource into an assignment channel and a traffic channel in a fixed manner. The assignment channel includes assignment segments and the traffic channel includes traffic segments. The traffic segment is the basic traffic channel resource unit used to transport traffic data and has a prescribed finite time interval and bandwidth. Each traffic segment is associated with a so-called assignment segment in a prescribed manner. One or more traffic segments may be associated with a particular assignment segment. A base station broadcasts via an assignment segment which wireless terminal is to use a particular traffic segment. This is realized by transmitting a simply identifier for the particular wireless terminal assigned to the particular traffic segment in the assignment segment.

  • Patent number: 6819157
Abstract: A delay compensation circuit that determines the effects of process, voltage, and temperature (PVT) conditions of a chip by measuring the effective delay time of delay components inside the chip. The delay compensation circuit includes a plurality of sampler modules, each of which receives a delayed clock signal from one of a series of delay cells within a tapped delay circuit. The delay compensation circuit generates an output value based on the total number of sampling modules that lock into a fixed input signal using the delayed clock signals. Since the delay time of each delay cell changes based on variations of PVT conditions, the output values generated by the delay compensation circuit are determinate of PVT conditions in the chip. These output values can be used to design components to compensate for variances in PVT conditions or to control a variable delay component based on detected PVT conditions.

  • Patent number: 6820090
Abstract: In a method for acquiring statistical information from data, an initial cumulative distribution function (CDF) that characterizes an initial set of data is acquired. The acquisition of this CDF comprises acquiring a set of quantile endpoints that define the CDF. At least one additional CDF, which characterizes a further set of data, is also acquired. Information that describes the initial CDF is combined with information that describes one or more additional CDFs, and the result is used to obtain a composite CDF that describes a combined set of data that includes the initial data set and the one or more further data sets. Then, a new set of quantile endpoints is determined, that defines the composite CDF. The sequence of steps described above is repeated at least once more. The previously obtained composite CDF is used as the initial CDF for each repetition of this sequence.

  • Patent number: 6819659
Abstract: An improved technique for reducing unnecessary routing area updates ensures that the location of a mobile terminal is known when the mobile terminal starts data communication after being in a standby state. If no packet transmission is taking place when a mobile terminal moves between the first and second wireless access systems in a common routing area of a packet radio access network, no routing area update takes place. If packet transmission is initiated, no routing area update may be required if the mobile is connected to the same wireless access system as in its previous packet transmission. If packet transmission is initiated, a routing area update may take place if the mobile is connected to a different wireless access system than in the previous packet transmission. If packet transmission is initiated by the mobile, the packet transmission initiation may include the routing area update.

  • Publication number: 20040224473
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for manufacturing bipolar transistors having reduced parasitic resistance and therefore improved performance compared to conventionally made bipolar transistors. Dry etching of a compound semiconductor in the transistor allows a perimeter of the compound semiconductor layer to be substantially coextensive with a perimeter of an overlying metal layer. This, in turn, reduces the gap between the compound semiconductor and subsequently deposited metal layer to be minimized, thereby reducing the parasitic resistance of the bipolar transistor.

  • Patent number: 6816736
Abstract: In a unique paging time slot format, each of the allocated paging time slots occurs periodically and is split into several prescribed paging time slots including at least one first type paging time slot having a relatively short duration and at least one second type paging time slot having a longer duration. The at least one first type paging time slots is of relatively short duration and transports an indication whether a particular associated wireless terminal was paged. The second type paging time slot is of longer duration than the first type time slot and transports the entire paging message. Specifically, a wireless terminal that is normally in a standby mode only has to enter a monitor mode, i.e., “wake up”, to monitor the relatively short first type paging time slot to determine whether it has been paged.

  • Patent number: 6816460
Abstract: In an ad-hoc mobile network, a geometry-based routing algorithm (GRA) is used to route traffic from a source node to a destination node. In the GRA, a source node maintains location information and routing information for all nodes in a local area and approximate location information for at least some nodes outside the local area. If the source node has to send a packet to a destination node outside their local area, then the source node uses the approximate location information of the destination node to identify which node in its local area is closer to the destination node than the source node. The source node then sends the packet to the identified local node for further routing.
