  • Patent number: 6538600
Abstract: The invention is directed towards a method for estimating a PRN synchronization and Doppler shift of a satellite signal at a reference location within a cell and sector of where a wireless terminal or WAG client is located. The estimates are based on information conveyed by a GPS signal acquired by an auxiliary system or WAG server, which may be at a location different from the wireless terminal or WAG client. The PRN synchronization and Doppler shift estimates are also based on some reference time, which is a time that is sufficiently far into the future to allow the WAG client to demodulate and decode the PRN synchronization and Doppler shift estimates from an assisting message transmitted by the WAG server and to use such estimates to acquire GPS signals, wherein the assisting message indicates the PRN synchronization and Doppler shift estimates.

  • Patent number: 6539089
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for implementing a plurality of numbering plans in a telecommunications network. A network can support a private numbering plan for identifying private lines, as well as conventional public numbering plans. An illustrative hybrid numbering plan has a generic format of NPA-PPP-EXTN. The NPA value is a geographic component, in a similar manner to the PSTN plan. The PPP value identifies private lines or trunks. The EXTN value carries either the dialed digits or the derived digits through the network to the terminating private line. The EXTN digits may be required by a destination PBX to route a call to a connected station or another PBX. A numbering plan flag differentiates each of the different numbering plans employed by a network, such as the private numbering plan and the public numbering plan, to establish a plurality of routing domains.

  • Patent number: 6539090
Abstract: Apparatus and a method for controlling the establishment of telecommunications calls. In response to a service request from a calling party, a switch serving the calling party transmits a query identifying the called party to a shared database. The database provides information identifying the switch for accessing the called party, and information for identifying port(s) for accessing the called party from that switch. When a customer moves from one location to another, the database is updated to reflect the switch and port identification associated with the new location of the customer. If the called customer is a mobile customer, the database maintains information concerning the current location of that customer so that calls can be immediately switched to that customer.

  • Patent number: 6538991
Abstract: A packet network of interconnected nodes employs a constraint-based routing method to determine a path through the network for a requested label-switched path (LSP). Each of the nodes includes one or more routers that forward packets based on a forwarding table constructed from paths determined in accordance with the constraint-based routing method. The constraint-based method determines the path of the requested LSP based on the effect that routing those packets of the requested LSP may have on current and/or future demands on the capacity of network nodes for currently provisioned LSPs. Such constraint-based routing method may not necessarily route packets of a requested LSP along the shortest path, or minimum number of hops, through the network. Given the packet network and LSP request, a linear programming system is defined by a set of linear programming equations.

  • Patent number: 6535738
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for improving system capacity without compromising soft handoff by optimizing the number of communication links used in soft handoff. The number of communication links used in soft handoff are optimized by minimizing the number of base stations in the active sets based on signal characteristics of associated communication links. By minimizing the number of base stations in the active sets, the number of traffic channels reserved for soft handoffs may be reduced since less traffic channels would be needed for soft handoffs, thereby increasing system capacity by increasing the number of available traffic channels for assignment to mobile-telephones in non-soft handoff situations.

  • Patent number: 6535660
Abstract: A Raman-amplified optical transmission system 80 includes a source of optical transmission signals having a system wavelength, &lgr;s, that are connected to one end of the of a first optical fiber 50-1 having a large effective area, i.e., Aeff≧70 &mgr;m2. The other end of the first optical fiber is connected to a second optical fiber 50-2 having a small effective area, i.e., Aeff≦60 &mgr;m2. Preferably, the first and second optical fibers have opposite dispersion signs. A wavelength-division multiplexer 87, for example, couples optical transmission signals &lgr;1 . . . &lgr;n, from an optical pump 88 to the second optical fiber that cause it to exhibit stimulated Raman scattering, which provides amplification of the optical transmission signals. Preferably, the optical pump signals propagate along the second optical fiber in a direction that is opposite the direction of the optical transmission signals. Exemplary cables 500, 600 are disclosed that include both large and small-effective-area fibers.
