Abstract: Virtual reality system facilitating the setup and conduction of a virtual reality episode by receiving virtual reality data captured by virtual reality environment (VRE) user equipment, and transmitting the virtual reality data via a network to other virtual reality components capable of presenting the virtual reality data. The setup and conduction of the virtual reality episode occurs in real-time, such that a user can participate in an episode that represents events presently occurring in an environment. The VRE user equipment includes wireless devices such that one or more mobile users at a plurality of locations may simultaneously participate in a virtual reality episode.
Abstract: A support for a mirror which reflects a laser ray to a detector. The mirror is gimballed about two perpendicular axes. The mirror is supported solely by strain gauges. Rotation of the mirror about an axis causes one of the strain gauges to produce a signal indicative of the rotation. The signals are used as feedback signals to indicate position of the mirror, and thus position of the reflected ray.

Abstract: A duobinary modulator and a method of modulating an optical signal so as to be coded in a duobinary manner, using optical modulating specifically adapted for this purpose is provided. Two input electrical signals are respectively input to two binary encoders. The binary encoders encode the input electrical signals and generate a pair of encoded binary signals which are then input to an analog amplifier. The analog amplifier amplifies the encoded binary signals and generates a pair of duobinary signals. Then, the duobinary signals are input to a dual-electrode modulator which modulates a pair of optical beams with the duobinary signals to generate a pair of modulated optical duobinary signals. Both modulated optical duobinary signals are then combined to generate the desired high-speed modulated optical duobinary signal.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for diffusion annealing impurities onto a plurality of wafers is described. A hollow wafer holder includes a plurality of first and second slots. The first slots are sized and shaped to receive a pair of wafers. The first slots are angled relative to a longitudinal axis of the wafer holder. The wafer holder is positioned at a first location within an ampoule, with a diffusion source being positioned at a second location within the ampoule. The ampoule is sealed and placed within or near a heat source. The heat source alters the physical state of the diffusion source to allow the entrained impurities to diffuse throughout the ampoule. The inclination of the first slots allows a sufficient clearance between the wafers and the ampoule to allow impurities within a gaseous diffusion source to extend throughout the ampoule. The presence of the second slots allows a more uniform diffusion of the impurities to the wafers.

Abstract: A memory cell of a non-volatile memory includes a control gate oxide layer having graded portions with greatly reduced stress on a polysilicon floating gate layer. The method of making the control gate oxide layer preferably includes growing a first oxide portion by upwardly ramping the polysilicon floating gate layer to a first temperature lower than a glass transition temperature, and exposing the polysilicon floating gate layer to an oxidizing ambient at the first temperature and for a first time period. Also, the method includes growing a second oxide portion between the first oxide portion and the polysilicon floating gate layer by exposing the polysilicon floating gate layer to an oxidizing ambient at a second temperature higher than the glass transition temperature for a second time period. The second oxide portion may have a thickness in a range of about 25 to 75% of a total thickness of the graded, grown, control gate oxide layer.
Abstract: A wireless communication system or method capable of providing both a two-way telephone service and a two-way paging service on the same infrastructure. The system or method is capable of distinguishing whether a subscriber is a telephone or paging subscriber. If the subscriber is a two-way paging subscriber, the system or method allows the calling party to have the capability of conversing directly with the called party for a limited time or the options of leaving voice, numeric or alphanumeric messages for the called party to retrieve later.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for use in a wireless communications network searches for the best serving access point of a base station as a function of communication link quality and load levels, thereby allowing a subscriber terminal to react to changes in RF conditions and load levels. In one implementation, a wireless modem in a fixed wireless access network initiates an access point searching algorithm in response to a triggering condition, such as initially powering-up the subscriber terminal or degradation of communication link quality or load levels. After detecting beacons for a plurality of neighboring access points, the wireless modem selects the best access point as a function of communication link quality and relative load levels to maintain adequate service quality and to react to changes in load levels. After an initial selection, the wireless modem may continually monitor quality/load conditions to determine whether to select a new access point.

Abstract: An apparatus, method and system are provided for personal telecommunication incoming call screening and alerting for call waiting applications. During a first telecommunication call, the method includes, first, receiving a second telecommunication call, and second, determining a relative priority of the second telecommunication call compared to the first telecommunication call. When the second telecommunication call has a same relative priority or a higher relative priority than the first telecommunication call, the method provides a first level of priority service to the second telecommunication call, such as interrupting the user and providing a distinctive user alert during the first telecommunication call indicative of the same or higher level of priority.
Abstract: A scalable, reconfigurable, and cost-effective add/drop arrangement is provided which enables a wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) system to be upgraded to accommodate new or changing add/drop requirements without disruptions in existing service. The add/drop arrangement is based on a modular architecture wherein one or more modular optical routing devices are coupled in an optical fiber path to facilitate the selective adding/dropping of individual optical channels and to facilitate in-service upgrades without disrupting existing transmissions in the optical fiber path. In an exemplary embodiment, at least two directional optical transfer devices, such as optical circulators, are coupled to a drop path for dropping optical channels from the WDM signal, an add path for receiving optical channels to be added to the WDM signal, and a common path between the directional optical transfer devices.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to an optical time-domain reflectometer which employs a so-called “out-of-band” offsetting to cancel the effects of Raman non-linearities which extract energy from the traffic signal wavelengths and amplify the test signal back-scattering. Losses and faults in the optical fibers are monitored by measuring the back-scattered portion of the light launched into the fiber, with the test signal back-scattering judiciously offset to account for the Raman non-linearities. That is, the effects of the Raman non-linearities are taken as a baseline measurement and, then accordingly used as a basis to offset the test signal back-scattering.
Abstract: An apparatus, method and system are provided for a handoff of a mobile broadcast of information specific to a geographic region. The mobile broadcast is typically transmitted on a first broadcast channel from a serving switching center and a serving transceiver to a mobile unit, such as to a cellular telephone. The preferred system includes a plurality of mobile switching centers coupled via signaling and trunk lines to a plurality of transceivers. The serving switching center selects a target switching center and transmits a handoff directive, the handoff directive including a broadcast parameter designating the mobile broadcast. In the preferred embodiment, the broadcast parameter is an eight bit designation of the broadcast channel, and may be included within a field of ANSI-compatible messages, such as Facilities Directives and Handoff Measurement Requests, and distinguishes the handoff of the information broadcast from other types of communication handoffs.

Abstract: Four different light signals, all of the same optical frequency, but, having different states of polarization, are transmitted through an optical device and the mean signal delay of each of the light signals is measured. Calculations, based upon the relationship, &tgr;g=&tgr;0−½ {right arrow over (&OHgr;)}·{overscore (s)}, describing the polarization dependence of &tgr;g (a measured mean signal delay) through the device as a function of &tgr;0 (a polarization independent delay component of the device), {right arrow over (&OHgr;)} (the PMD vector at the device input) and {overscore (s)} (the input Stokes vector of the light signal), yield the PMD of the device. Also, by comparing data taken at adjacent wavelengths, the chromatic dispersion of the optical device can be accurately measured even in the presence of PMD.

Abstract: An Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Loop (ADSL) Discrete Multi-Tone system has disjoint and adjacent upstream and downstream channels. During the training phase of an ADSL connection, an ADSL DMT transmitter first determines a round trip propagation delay by transmitting a ranging signal to a far-end ADSL endpoint. During the subsequent communications phase, the ADSL transmitter synchronizes transmission of DMT symbols to a reference clock. In addition, the cyclic extensions of each DMT symbol are increased as a function of the propagation delay.
