  • Patent number: 6438131
Abstract: Information is communicated in an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) or other packet-based communication system using a service specific convergence layer which associates a holdover indicator with each of a number of packets generated in a voice and telephony service layer. The service specific convergence layer may be a Service Specific Convergence Sublayer (SSCS) of an ATM Adaptation Layer (AAL) Type 2 connection, and the holdover indicator may be a holdover bit in a user-to-user-indication (UUI) field of a Common Part Sublayer (CPS) header of the AAL 2 connection. The holdover indicator may specify, for example, whether a speech detector used for providing silence elimination in the transmitted information is in a holdover mode. The indicator can thus be used by a receiver to determine if a period of silence has begun in the transmitted information, so as to facilitate the generation of comfort noise. The holdover indicators can also be used to provide rate control in a CPS transmitter of an AAL 2 device.

  • Patent number: 6438266
Abstract: Disclosed is a scheme for creating, manipulating and transmitting images of a 3-D object through networks. A useful layering coupled with vector quantization allows an efficient combination of compressing and encoding of both the topology (connectivity) and geometry (vertex coordinates) of polygon meshes such as triangles. Connectivity information is contained in both generalized triangle strips and exception strips, the latter characterized by triangles for which all three vertices lie in the parent vertex layer. Geometry encoding is achieved with a productive vector quantization scheme which uses correction vectors for which distortion is merged into a following correction vector. Progressive connectivity transmission is achieved by using both intra-layer and inter-layer decomposition and reconstruction. The process encodes connectivity and geometry separately. Encoding of 3-D objects having left-right mirror symmetries using the process is described.

  • Patent number: 6434631
Abstract: A method and system for servicing disk I/O requests from domains which have been guaranteed minimum quality of disk service maintains I/O requests for each domain are in separate queues. The queues are serviced by a disk scheduler which selects requests from the queues in accordance with a fair queuing scheduling algorithm that considers the estimated time required to service the request at the head of a queue with regard for the size of the input or output associated with the request, the proportion of disk bandwidth assigned to the particular domain, and the state of the other queues.

  • Patent number: 6434367
Abstract: In a wireless communications system, a base station transmits power control signals (e.g., the power control bits of a power control sub-channel) to a mobile using a forward-link channel that is decoupled from all other signals transmitted from that base station to that mobile. For example, the decoupled forward-link channel may be a common power control channel. The mobile then uses the power control signals received in the decoupled forward-link channel to control its power level for transmitting one or more reverse-link channels to the base station. The ability of base stations to use decoupled forward-link channels in order to transmit their power control signals to a mobile enables a mobile to operate with different active sets for the forward and reverse links. This enables forward-link data traffic to be implemented using a simplex mode, even when the mobile is operating in soft handoff in the reverse link.

  • Patent number: 6434125
Abstract: In a digital cellular communications network, calls to and from a fax machine or other data equipment coupled to a digital phone require special encoding circuitry. Calls to and from a fax machine or other data device using amplitude and/or phase modulated tones can be handled more efficiently by monitoring such incoming calls for the presence of audio control tones. Upon the detection of such tones, appropriate encoding circuitry is automatically switched in to properly encode/decode data tones so as to permit the automatic transmission of data over a wireless cellular network using CDMA, TDMA or other digital protocols.

  • Patent number: 6434134
Abstract: The number of packet routing addresses utilized within a wired subnet offering wireless services via subnet base stations is reduced by assigning a packet routing address to a wireless device accessing a wired subnet upon power up of the wireless device. A Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server is utilized to assign the packet routing addresses, and supplies addresses either directly or indirectly via a node acting as a DHCP relay for a DHCP server. If the assigned packet routing address is a care-of address for a foreign domain, the address is released upon wireless device power down or upon handoff of the wireless device to a new domain. If the assigned packet routing address is an address for the wireless device within a home domain, the address is released upon wireless device power down.

  • Patent number: 6434566
Abstract: A method and system for efficiently resolving the multi-method dispatching problem provided. The dispatching problem is reduced to geometric problems on multi-dimensional grids and new data structures are provided for the resulting geometric problems. In particular, methods having the same name are mapped to a set of rectangles based on a pair of numbers associated with each argument. The pair of numbers is an interval identifying the position of the argument in a class hierarchy tree. The interval is found by computing an Euler Tour of the class hierarchy tree. For a given method invocation in an object-oriented program, the method invocation is mapped to a point based on one of the numbers in the interval associated with each argument in the invocation. The problem of finding the most specific method for the method invocation is thus transformed into the so-called point enclosure problem in geometry, in which the smallest rectangle is found which encloses a given point.

  • Patent number: 6434726
Abstract: During device design, wire bonds are typically considered lumped electrical parasitic elements. To minimize their effect, designs attempt to reduced their length. In the invention, wire bonds are considered as transmission lines and their spacing and configuration on the device planned accordingly. Specifically, bond wires are treated as “coplanar wires.” By selecting a proper combination on wire diameter, bond wire spacing, separation of the bond wires from the substrate and the substrate dielectric constant, a desired bond wire impedance is achievable.

  • Patent number: 6434742
Abstract: The present symbol renaming process allows a symbol in a first source code file to be renamed by the linker. This allows new layers of software to be added under an existing interface without recompiling existing code. Symbol renaming in the linker also allows a programmer to easily fix mismatched symbols in linked files without recompiling the source code in all of the linked files. The linker scans a first intermediate object code file to detect a substitution indicator indicating a variable or function in a second file is to be renamed. The symbol to be replaced is read and then the substitution symbol is read. The linker then replaces every occurrence of the symbol as the symbol is read from a second file with the substitution symbol in the intermediate code file generated by the linker.

  • Patent number: 6434390
Abstract: A macrodiversity control system provides a wireless unit with a macrodiversity mode depending on the operating category of the wireless unit. For example, a wireless communications system can have wireless units operating in categories related to the mobility of the wireless unit, such as fixed, limited fixed (mobility within the home cell) and/or fully mobile. For a wireless unit, the macrodiversity mode of the wireless unit can be established depending on the operating category for the wireless unit. Where the wireless unit is fixed and has good reception from a home base station, particularly in regions close to the home base station, macrodiversity for the wireless unit can be restricted. Because the mobility of the wireless unit is restricted in the fixed (or limited fixed) mode, the fading of signals between the home base station and the wireless unit should not be severe, thereby macrodiversity is disabled.
