  • Patent number: 6433411
Abstract: The specification describes packaging assemblies for micro-electronic machined mechanical systems (MEMS). The MEMS devices in these package assemblies are based on silicon MEMS devices on a silicon support and the MEMS devices and the silicon support are mechanically isolated from foreign materials. Foreign materials pose the potential for differential thermal expansion that deleteriously affects optical alignment in the MEMS devices. In a preferred embodiment the MEMS devices are enclosed in an all-silicon chamber. Mechanical isolation is also aided by using a pin contact array for interconnecting the silicon support substrate for the MEMS devices to the next interconnect level. The use of the pin contact array also allows the MEMS devices to be easily demountable for replacement or repair.

  • Patent number: 6434390
Abstract: A macrodiversity control system provides a wireless unit with a macrodiversity mode depending on the operating category of the wireless unit. For example, a wireless communications system can have wireless units operating in categories related to the mobility of the wireless unit, such as fixed, limited fixed (mobility within the home cell) and/or fully mobile. For a wireless unit, the macrodiversity mode of the wireless unit can be established depending on the operating category for the wireless unit. Where the wireless unit is fixed and has good reception from a home base station, particularly in regions close to the home base station, macrodiversity for the wireless unit can be restricted. Because the mobility of the wireless unit is restricted in the fixed (or limited fixed) mode, the fading of signals between the home base station and the wireless unit should not be severe, thereby macrodiversity is disabled.

  • Patent number: 6434124
Abstract: In a cellular system based on industry standard IS-95 CDMA (code division multiple access), a symbol error count based reverse link outer loop power control technique uses adaptive SER targets. In particular, a base station uses a 2nd order statistic, e.g., standard deviation (variance), to identify, or act as a signature of, a particular cellular (wireless) communications environment. The base station monitors the standard deviation of the symbol error count of a received signal (transmitted from a mobile station). The target signal-to-noise ratio (EbT/N0T) of this received signal is adjusted as a function of the value of the standard deviation and the adjusted EbT/N0T target is used to provide power control.

  • Patent number: 6434388
Abstract: The present invention relates to a cordless communication system with high user capacity, especially cordless communication systems operating under the DECT standard. This system comprises fixed or mobile terminals (T1, T2, T3, T4), radio sets (B1, B2, B3) with which the terminals can communicate, and radio controllers (CR1, CR2) linked groupwise to the radio sets. The collection of radio controllers manages the collection of radio sets. Each terminal continually examines the state of the radio set, saturated or otherwise, onto which it is locked, and then, if the radio set is saturated, triggers a new operation of locking onto another radio set.

  • Patent number: 6434394
Abstract: A multiple handset cordless telephone includes a Caller ID/handset association table to identify a desired intended handset to receive an incoming call before the call is answered. When a match is made as between received call related information and a pre-stored entry in the Caller ID/handset association table, one or more intended handsets are provided with the subsequent ring signals and/or the subsequent voice conversation. If no match is found the cordless telephone operates otherwise in conventional fashion, i.e., all handsets ring in response to the incoming call, and any or all of the handsets may join the conversation at any time.

  • Patent number: 6434202
Abstract: Pulses of high-frequency signals (HFS) with different power levels (P1 . . . n) are generated using a first control element (2) for adjusting a power level (P1 . . . n) of a pulse plateau (BP1 . . . N), and a second control element (3) for adjusting a number of level values (PW1 . . . n, PW′1 . . . n) for forming the respective pulse edge (PF1 . . . N) Using an attenuator (2) as a first control element, the power (PN) of a burst (BPN) of the high-frequency signal (HFS) can be adjusted with high precision in small defined power steps, e.g. in a 2-dB tuning lock (ramping), within a time division multiple access system(TDMA) from one time division (Zm) to the next time division (ZM+1). Furthermore, the rate of change of the burst or of each burst (BPN) can be controlled by means of the second control element in the form of a controllable amplifier, so that an admissible interference spectrum is kept and interferences through spurious radiation are avoided.

  • Patent number: 6434382
Abstract: The cellular call processor having concurrent instances of call models supports mixed media communication connections. The cellular call processor processes each of the media components of the mixed media communication connection in an independent, yet coordinated manner. Thus, each of the media components of the mixed media communication connection can be processed in an efficient media-specific manner and even directed to different destinations. The cellular call processor can implement this capability in a plurality of ways, one of which is to maintain the existing voice call model and create a new call model for each of the other call components in a media-specific manner. Alternatively, multiple instances of the same call model can be used, with each call component being served by a separate instance of the call processing code.

  • Patent number: 6434618
Abstract: A programmable network element (400) operates on packet traffic flowing through the element in accordance with a gateway program (404, 405, 406) which is dynamically uploaded into the network element or unloaded from it via a mechanism separate from the actual packet traffic as the element operates. Such programmable network element can simultaneously operate on plural packet flows with different or the same programs being applied to each flow. A dispatcher (402) provides a packet filter (403) with a set of rules provided by one or more of the dynamically loaded and invoked programs. These rules define, for each program, the characteristics of those packets flowing through the network element that are to be operated upon in some manner. A packet that flows from the network through the filter and satisfies one or more of such rules is sent by the packet filter to the dispatcher.

  • Patent number: 6430671
Abstract: An integrated circuit, e.g. an AC '97 conforming audio codec, includes a digital filter and gain module including multiple channels of gain control and multiple channels of digital filtering. A gain control module includes an overflow check of data samples requiring differing lengths of clamping. Each channel of the digital filter includes a finite impulse response (FIR) filter, and an infinite impulse response (IIR) filter. The digital filtering is implemented largely in hardware independent of the number of channels required and/or independent of the required order of the filtering. Thus, filter channels can be added or additional filtering implemented merely by increasing the clock speed without changing the digital filter design. The FIR filter is capable of being reset each frame to prevent a DC buildup at internal nodes. The IIR filter performs a plurality of 2nd order biquadratic equations in an overall average of as few as four clock cycles per 2nd order biquad.

  • Patent number: 6430401
Abstract: In a communications system implementing, e.g., an in-band on channel AM (IBOC-AM) (also known as “hybrid IBOC-AM”) scheme, multiple bit streams are used to represent an audio signal to be transmitted over one or more frequency bands including, e.g., parts of an AM frequency band for radio broadcast. These bit streams contain various and/or equivalent amounts of audio information. In an illustrative embodiment, at least one of the bit streams is a core bit stream containing core audio information. The remaining bit streams are enhancement bit streams containing enhancement audio information. The core bit stream is necessary for recovering the audio signal with minimal acceptable quality. Such quality is enhanced when the core bit stream, together with one or more of the enhancement bit streams, is used to recover the audio signal. In accordance with the invention, the AM frequency band is divided into subbands.

  • Patent number: 6430403
Abstract: A temperature compensated zero bias RF detector circuit includes a zero biased diode detector circuit feeding the positive input of a differential amplifier circuit. The negative input of the same differential amplifier circuit is a temperature compensation voltage. The temperature compensation voltage is produced by current flow from a bias source through a reference diode and through the resistor back to ground. The bias supply remains constant over temperature, whereas the temperature compensation voltage changes with temperature as the forward voltage across the reference diode changes with temperature. The differential amplifier outputs a temperature compensated detection voltage. The differential amplifier is followed by a voltage level shifter, which adjusts the output temperature compensated voltage to a suitable level for measuring equipment or for use by other processing circuits.

  • Patent number: 6427040
Abstract: In accordance with the invention, an optical waveguide grating with an adjustable optical spacing profile comprises a waveguide grating in thermal contact with one or more resistive film coatings. A coating extends along the length of the grating and its local resistance varies along the length of the grating. In one embodiment, a plurality of overlaping coatings are chosen so the resistance variation of each is different, thereby permitting a variety of heat generation profiles to be effected by independent control of the coatings. The different heat generation profiles, in turn, proportionately change the grating geometric spacing and local refractive index along the grating length, providing the desired adjustable optical spacing profile. Other embodiments use resistive films with abruptly changing or periodically changing heating variation.

  • Patent number: 6427213
Abstract: An apparatus, method and system are provided for file synchronization for a fault tolerant network, and are both application and platform independent. The fault tolerant network generally includes an active network entity, such as a telecommunication server, and a standby network entity to assume the functionality of the active network entity in the event of a failure of the active network entity. The method of the present invention includes accessing a file within the active network entity, such as through a read or write request of any network application. A file access request within the active network entity is generated and transmitted to the standby network entity, which also performs the file access request. The standby network entity then generates and transmits a file access confirmation to the active network entity. The active network entity then determines whether the file access request of the active network entity has a corresponding file access confirmation from the standby network entity.
