  • Patent number: 6389113
Abstract: A technique for monitoring the calls placed to the telephone number associated with the party under surveillance. When a call to the telephone number associated with party under surveillance is placed, the call is routed via an assigned meet-me bridge, and a third party is provided with the unique telephone number of the meet-me bridge via a pager. When the third party places a call to the assigned meet-me bridge, the incoming call to the party under surveillance and the call by the third party are bridged. Thereon, the third party is placed on mute and the third party may silently listen to the conversation between the caller and the called party. When a call (i.e., a page) to a telephone number associated with a pager of the party under surveillance is received, a third party is alerted.

  • Patent number: 6388642
Abstract: A bidirectional multispeed indexing control system for a display unit which has an increment input and a decrement input so as to be controllable to sequentially index through an ordered list of discrete elements. The control system has a two-button user interface. The user presses one button to increment once, and holds that button to continuously index at a slow fixed speed. To increase the indexing speed, the user presses the second button while continuing to hold the first button. Indexing speed will continue to increase until either a maximum speed is reached or the user releases the second button, at which point the indexing speed decreases from the value reached while holding the second button. To stop indexing, both buttons are released. To increment in the opposite direction (i.e., decrement), the order in which the buttons are pressed is reversed.

  • Patent number: 6389138
Abstract: A complex spreading and/or scrambling code sequence generation system uses a first complex code sequence having at least two components and a second complex code sequence having at least two components. The components of the first complex code sequence are respectively mixed with the corresponding components of the second complex code sequence to generate the complex scrambling code sequence. In doing so, an offset between the components of the complex scrambling code sequence is achieved for the same and/or different users. The complex scrambling code sequence can be used for spreading, scrambling, de-spreading or descrambling an information signal.

  • Patent number: 6389203
Abstract: In accordance with the invention, a tunable optical all-pass filter with a substrate-supported multilayer waveguiding structure. A first layer including a waveguiding optical ring resonator, a second layer for spacing, and a third layer including a curved waveguide. The curved waveguide is optically coupled to the resonator by two spaced apart optical couplers extending through the spacing layer, and tunability is provided by a first phase-shifter to control the optical pathlength of the resonator and a second phase-shifter operative on the waveguide to control the strength of coupling between the waveguide and the resonator. In one embodiment, the waveguide and the resonator are horizontally spaced apart in the non-coupling regions to provide optical isolation. In another, the waveguide and resonator can overlap horizontally, but the spacer layer is thicker in the non-coupling regions to provide optical isolation.

  • Patent number: 6389462
Abstract: In order to transparently redirect an HTTP connection request that is directed to an origin server (107) to a proxy cache (110-1), a proxy redirector (104) translates the destination address of packets directed to the origin server to the address of the proxy. During a handshaking procedure, a TCP connection is transparently established between the client (110-1) and the proxy cache. When the client transmits a GET request to what it thinks is the origin server, which request specifies the complete address of an object at that origin server that it wants a copy of, the proxy redirector modifies the complete address specified in that GET request before it is sent to the proxy cache. Specifically, the IP address of the origin server found in the destination field in the IP header of the one or more packets from the client containing the GET request is added by the proxy redirector as a prefix to the complete URL in the GET request to form an absolute URL.

  • Patent number: 6388800
Abstract: A fiber Raman amplifier with increased gain and improved pump conversion efficiency is formed by including a high pass optical filter in the amplifier structure. The filter may comprise one or more discrete components, or may be formed as a “distributed” filter along the length of the fiber amplifier. The cut-off frequency for the high pass optical filter is selected to be immediately below the frequency of the input signal to be amplified. When used in an arrangement with multiple input signals, the cutoff frequency is controlled to be immediately below the lowest input signal frequency.

  • Patent number: 6389084
Abstract: A method and apparatus for equalizing a signal to accurately deconvolute the channel includes deriving a functional relationship between Doppler frequency and variance between the instantaneous energy of the received signal and the mean energy of the received signal. Theoretical values of Doppler frequency for a range of values of variance are mapped based on the derived functional relationship. The variance of a received signal is determined and the corresponding Doppler frequency estimate selected from the map. Optimal equalization learning parameters are then selected based on the corresponding Doppler frequency estimate so that the received signal may be deconvoluted independent of the impact of Doppler frequency.

  • Patent number: 6388779
Abstract: The invention involves a holographic system containing a photopolymer-type storage medium located in the system's optical path, where the medium is rotated around a first axis such that the surface of the medium is in a non-orthogonal relationship with the optical path, and a spatial light modulator also located in the optical path, where the modulator is rotated around a second axis that is substantially orthogonal to the first axis, and wherein the surface of the modulator is in a non-orthogonal relationship with the optical path. This arrangement compensates for at least a portion of aberration introduced by the photopolymer media, thereby allowing presentation of a flatter, more focused, and less distorted image at the sensor.

  • Patent number: 6388526
Abstract: Circuits for continuously varying the gain control for a low noise amplifier (LNA) of a wireless receiver are described. The gain, input third order intercept point (IIP3) and noise figure (NF) of an LNA are continuously varied according to the received power levels, causing the receiver to utilize less current at different power levels. At high gain levels the IIP3and NF are at a minimum, while at low gain levels the IIP3and the NF are at a maximum. By continuously varying the gain of an LNA throughout the operational range, the present invention achieves wider dynamic range and higher power efficiency. According to one aspect, the present invention includes a power coupler and a power detector which are utilized to produce a rectified voltage which is proportional to the input power or output power of an LNA. The rectified voltage is utilized by a control circuit which produces a signal which controls the gain, IIP3and NF of the LNA.

  • Patent number: 6388559
Abstract: A remote control system uses a state signal that indicates whether a door or lock is opening, open, closing or closed. The state signal that indicates whether a door or lock is opening, open, closing or closed is transmitted. The remote control device receives the state signal, while the remote control device is proximate to the door or lock. The received state signal is stored in the remote control device. An alarm signal is generated, if the state signal is not received by the remote control device, and the stored state signal indicates that the door or lock is opening or open. The system may be used to monitor and control an automatic garage door opener, a power door locking system in an automobile, a trunk locking system in an automobile, or door or window locking systems in a building.

  • Patent number: 6389186
Abstract: In accordance with the invention, a pumped waveguide device comprising a pump waveguide and an active waveguide is provided with a pump power monitor by disposing between the pump source and the active waveguide, an indicator waveguide having a core doped with a material sensitive to the pump light. For example the material can fluoresce in response to pump light or absorb pump light and generate heat. Pump power is then accurately measured by the fluorescence or heat from the indicator waveguide. Since the fluorescence or heat is generated in the doped core, the measurement is sensitive to the pump power that will enter the active waveguide and is relatively insensitive to changes in mode distribution. Exemplary embodiments include monitored cladding pumped fiber lasers, amplifiers and light sources.

  • Patent number: 6389131
Abstract: A method and apparatus for establishing calls initiated by an initial call attempt request to permit the characteristics of call connections established in response to the ICA request to be controlled by translation information of a defining port. The defining port can be a real port of a switch, or a pseudo port having associated therewith a block of translation information, but no physical network equipment. Among the characteristics that can be controlled are a billing number of the call, and a routing plan for determining a route based on destination information specified in the ICA request, and the line or trunk features offered in the switch. Advantageously, the characteristics of the ICA request connection can be specified by translation information instead of being inflexibly tied to the pre-defined standard characteristics.
