  • Patent number: 6377972
Abstract: A new architecture and operational techniques for supporting high quality live and on-demand streaming multimedia on a data network. By using Helper machines inside the network as data forwarding, caching, and buffering agents, and by forming meshes among Helper machines, advantages of homogeneous, synchronous multicast transmission and of heterogeneous, asynchronous reception are achieved. The architecture provides essentially transparently support to the receivers for near-zero start-up latency, improved playback quality, improved CR-like operations. These are achieved while reducing network and server load compared to today's multimedia networking techniques.

  • Patent number: 6377675
Abstract: A method and apparatus for even SLS code distribution is provided. SLS codes are assigned to signaling links that connect signaling nodes in a telecommunications network. The SLS codes determine a physical link used for routing messages in the network. Each link has a nominal set of SLS codes, which provide for even SLS distribution when all links are available. When a link is unavailable, its nominal SLS codes are reassigned to an available link. When an unavailable link is restored, the nominal SLS codes for the restored link are allocated to the restored link (302). Then a determination is made of the desirable number of SLS codes each available link should have for even SLS distribution (303). Any links that have more than the desired number of SLS codes for even distribution have the number of SLS codes assigned to that link reduced by allocating the excess SLS codes to a buffer (305, 308).

  • Patent number: 6377377
Abstract: The present invention is a transmitter device and related system and method for use in high speed optical transmission systems. In one exemplary embodiment of the present invention, light from a laser diode power output is split into two branches of substantially equal power. At least a first optical modulator, for example a phase modulator, receives light from the first branch and modulates URZ data from a URZ coder thereon. The modulator, which may also be second optical modulator receives light from the laser diode on the second branch and modulates delayed data (URZd) representative of the URZ data from the URZ coder thereon. The net delay at the receiver in the delayed URZd data is preferably T/2, where T is a pulse period of URZ data. The first and second sets of data originating from the first and second branches of the transmitter, respectively, are uniquely added together at the transmitter, fiber or receiver in order to realize UNRZ data.

  • Patent number: 6374099
Abstract: A high priority and/or emergency overload access control system treats a wireless unit as a higher priority wireless unit when the wireless unit is attempting to access a wireless communications system with a high priority call, such as an emergency call. For example, the overload access control system can recognize if the wireless unit is attempting to initiate a call to an emergency number. If so, the wireless unit can perform a persistence test as an emergency class (e.g. overload class 10-15) wireless unit in attempting to access the wireless communications system. Thus, the wireless unit will experience an increased probability of passing the persistence test and thereby reducing the persistence delay in attempting to access the wireless communications system with the emergency call.

  • Patent number: 6374103
Abstract: A method and apparatus for arranging transmission of overhead messages on the paging channel of a wireless communications system is described. Certain paging channel slots are established, based on a timing reference, that must contain an overhead message. In the intervening slots or slot fragments, the base station transmits mobile-directed messages, when they are available. When no mobile directed messages are available for transmission, the base station selects an overhead message from a queue for transmission on the intervening paging channel slot or slot fragment.

  • Patent number: 6373832
Abstract: A system, a transceiver, and methods for code division multiple access (CDMA) communication. The system includes first and second code division multiple access transceivers. The first code division multiple access transceiver has a plurality antennas disposed to provide transmission via a plurality of paths and the second code division multiple access transceiver has a rake arrangement for processing a plurality of signals received at the rake arrangement with differing delays or other characteristics. A driving arrangement is provided for causing the first code division multiple access transceiver to use a relative few, e.g., one, of the plurality of antennas. When, however, an indication is obtained that an adequate number of resolvable signals are likely not received at the rake arrangement of the second transceiver, a circuit switches the driving arrangement to cause the first transceiver to use more of the plurality of antennas.

  • Patent number: 6374221
Abstract: Automatic retraining of a speech recognizer during its normal operation in conjunction with an electronic device responsive to the speech recognizer is addressed. In this retraining, stored trained models are retrained on the basis of recognized user utterances. Feature vectors, model state transitions, and tentative recognition results are stored upon processing and evaluation of speech samples of the user utterances. A reliable transcript is determined for later adaptation of a speech model, in dependence upon the user's successive behavior when interacting with the speech recognizer and the electronic device. For example, in a name dialing process, such a behavior can be manual or voice re-dialing of the same number or dialing of a different phone number, immediately aborting an established communication, or braking it after a short period of time.

  • Patent number: 6374355
Abstract: In the method for securing over-the-air communication in wireless system, a mobile sends a system access request and dummy data associated with the system access request to a network. The network sends a first data stream including a first data portion to the mobile in response to the system access request and the dummy data. The mobile extracts the first data portion from the first bit stream, and sends a second bit stream to the network. The second bit stream includes a second data portion. The mobile and the network both generate a key based on the first data portion and the second data portion, and establish a first encrypted and authenticated communication channel in cooperation using the key. The mobile then transfers authorizing information to the network over the first encrypted and authenticated communication channel. If accepted, a second encrypted and authenticated communication channel is established.

  • Patent number: 6374264
Abstract: A method of detecting and recovering from data corruption of a database is characterized by the step of protecting data of the database with codewords, one codeword for each region of the database; and verifying that a codeword matches associated data before the data is read from the database to prevent transaction-carried corruption. A deferred maintenance scheme is recommended for the codewords protecting the database such that the method of detecting and recovering from data corruption of a database may comprise the steps of protecting data of the database with codewords, one codeword for each region of the database; and asynchronously maintaining the codewords to improve concurrency of the database. Moreover, the database may be audited by using the codewords and noting them in a table and protecting regions of the database with latches.
