  • Patent number: 6297592
Abstract: An improved gridded microwave tube is provided, the tube containing a cold cathode, an anode, and a grid located between the anode and cathode. In one embodiment, the cold cathode has a refractory metal substrate and carbon nanotube emitters, the emitters having a diameter of 1 to 300 nm and a length of 0.05 to 100 &mgr;m. The grid-cathode spacing is 1 to 100 &mgr;m, the grid contains apertures having a maximum dimension of 0.5 to 100 &mgr;m, and the grid thickness is 0.5 to 100 &mgr;m. Emission from the cathode directly onto the grid material itself, which undesirably heats the grid, is reduced by either (a) the presence of a shadow mask between the grid and the emitters or (b) selective formation of the emitters in locations that correspond to the grid apertures. The microwave tube operates at a frequency of greater than 0.5 GHz, advantageously greater than 2 GHz.

  • Patent number: 6297503
Abstract: A method of detecting defects within a semiconductor device is disclosed. An ion beam is focused in predetermined directions onto an area of a semiconductor device that is believed to have a suspected defect. A portion of the semiconductor device is milled and forms a thin film specimen to be removed from the semiconductor device. The thin film specimen is removed from the semiconductor device and placed onto an insulated film mount. Electrical connection points are created on previously unexposed portions of the thin film specimen by depositing a line of conductive material using a focused ion beam. The surface of the thin film specimen is scanned with an electron beam in a scanning electron microscope and observed for contrast. Processing errors are determined and the lateral resolution is about the electron beam size.

  • Patent number: 6298065
Abstract: A method and system for decreasing the probability of blocked access to a local exchange carrier's telecommunications network comprises a multi-mode line card for determining whether a particular call is a voice or data call. If a call is determined to require data transmission, the line card assigns time slots for interconnection of the line card to a serving digital switch. If no meaningful data is received, no time slots are assigned. In this manner, time slots interconnecting the serving digital switch to a line card are established only if data or voice is being transmitted from a subscriber line.

  • Patent number: 6295457
Abstract: A system for directly connecting a mobile communication system to a data network is provided. A user initiates data communication with the data network from a mobile communication system equipped with a computer, a modem and a mobile communication device. Data communication signals, which may be designated for routing to the data network, are transmitted from the mobile communication device to a hybrid base station having a standard base station, a control unit and a data network gateway, via a wireless telecommunication network. The signals are received by the hybrid base station and routed to the control unit which determines whether the received data communication signals are of the type designated for routing to the data network.

  • Patent number: 6295340
Abstract: A variable voice compression device and method in a voice messaging system is provided. The device includes a call related information/coding table or database which contains associations between call related information regarding desired calling parties, and selected coding techniques and effective data rates resulting in varying voice compression ratios. Upon receipt of an incoming call, call related information sent from the central office is compared to entries in the call related information/coding table or database. If a match is found, the subsequent voice message is encoded with a coding technique and effective data rate determined from the matching entry in the call related information/coding table or database. Otherwise, the voice message is encoded with a default coding technique and effective data rate.

  • Patent number: 6295515
Abstract: A static partial order reduction generator and process result in a substantially reduced state space graph of a multi-process system, independently of the model checking process. The process of this invention creates a modified state graph generator with appended rules that allow any desired state searching tactic (breadth first, depth first, etc.) to be employed when states and transitions are considered in the course of verification. This permits use of existing model checking tools without needing to modify them. The static partial order reduction is made possible by realizing that a prior art condition that at least one state along each cycle of the reduced state graph must be fully expanded can be guaranteed by considering the individual processes that make up the system and identifying certain transitions in those processes.
