Abstract: In a mobile communication system, independent versions of a signal are transmitted over plural antennas. The antennas are either spatially separated or orthogonally polarized with respect to each other so that the independent versions of the signal are not subjected to correlated fading. Each independent version of the signal is transmitted from a respective antenna a fixed delay after transmission of a previous version of a signal from a different antenna. The fixed delay is at least one information bit of the signal. Received versions of the signal are equalized in an equalizer or RAKE architecture to provide a composite signal. The equalizer has respective sets of equalizer taps that are separated from adjacent sets of equalizer taps by the fixed delay. The RAKE architecture has respective sets of RAKE fingers that are separated from adjacent sets of RAKE fingers by the fixed delay.

  • Patent number: 6285664
Abstract: A method and system that minimizes pilot signal overlap and radio frequency (“RF”) interference by estimating changes in pilot coverage for different traffic channel loading and power conditions. Once base stations are positioned, a terminal for measuring received pilot signal strengths, such as a mobile station or pilot scanner, is used to collect and generate the baseline pilot survey data, which is then stored on a disk or tape. Base station transmit pilot EC/IOs, i.e., traffic channel loads on forward links, are also stored on disk or tape. The invention uses two adjustment factors associated with transmit power and traffic channel loading to optimize for different RF conditions, specifically for different base station transmit power or forward link loading conditions. For each RF condition, the methodology calculates the changes in the baseline pilot survey data. This reflects what EC/IOs a mobile station would receive under the given conditions.

  • Patent number: 6285980
Abstract: A natural number recognition method and system that uses minimum classification error trained inter-word context dependent models of the head-body-tail type over a specific vocabulary. One part of the method and system allows recognition of spoken monetary amounts in financial transactions. A second part of the method and system allows recognition of numbers such as credit card or U.S. telephone numbers. A third part of the method and system allows recognition of natural language expressions of time, such as time of day, day of the week and date of the month for applications such as scheduling or schedule inquires. Even though limited natural language expressions are allowed, context sharing between similar sounds in the vocabulary within a head-body-tail model keeps storage and processing time requirements to manageable levels.

  • Patent number: 6286027
Abstract: An apparatus and method in digital processing provides a simple and efficient way of communicating parameters from a parent thread to child thread with two step thread creation. The method comprising the steps of: allocating hardware context for the child thread; enabling the parent thread to execute other instructions wherein parent thread register writes update both parent and child architectural registers; and spawning the child thread. In essence, the parent thread sends parameters to the child by writing to the parent's registers prior to spawning of the child thread.

  • Patent number: 6284883
Abstract: The invention is a method for separating target oligomers that are nucleic acid oligomers or analogs of a nucleic acid oligomer having a desired first subunit sequence, from impurity oligomers that is do not comprise the first subunit sequence. According to the invention, a mixture of oligomers comprising the target oligomers and the impurity oligomers, are loaded onto a separation medium under conditions such that the mixture of oligomers physically moves through the separation medium. The separation medium contains separation oligomers comprising a subunit sequence that is complementary to the first subunit sequence, and the separation oligomers are distributed in the separation medium during movement of the target and impurity oligomers through the separation medium. Conditions are controlled so that the rates of hybridization and dissociation of complementary portions of the target oligomers and the separation oligomers in the separation medium are about the same.

  • Patent number: 6285812
Abstract: In accordance with the invention, an optical fiber grating device is made by providing a fiber with an electrically actuable component optically responsive to voltage or current and a plurality of conductive elements to locally activate the component and thereby to produce local optical perturbations in the fiber. In a preferred embodiment, a fiber is provided with a core of liquid crystal material and a plurality of periodically spaced microelectrode pairs. Application of a voltage to the microelectrodes results in a periodic sequence of perturbations in the core index which produces a grating. When the voltage is switched off, the grating switches off. Other embodiments utilize helical conductive elements.

  • Patent number: 6285877
Abstract: The cellular call processor having concurrent instances of call models supports mixed media communication connections. The cellular call processor processes each of the media components of the mixed media communication connection in an independent, yet coordinated manner. Thus, each of the media components of the mixed media communication connection can be processed in an efficient media-specific manner and even directed to different destinations. The cellular call processor can implement this capability in a plurality of ways, one of which is to maintain the existing voice call model and create a new call model for each of the other call components in a media-specific manner. Alternatively, multiple instances of the same call model can be used, with each call component being served by a separate instance of the call processing code.

  • Patent number: 6285876
Abstract: The test unit delays its transmission of a reverse-link signal over the hard-wire connection to a base station by a specified transmission delay in order to ensure that the reverse-link signal is received at the base station within the base station search window. The present invention is especially useful in configurations in which the base station advances the timing of its forward-link signals to account for delay between the base station and its antennas and where there is a relatively large distance between the base station and its antennas. In such a configuration, without the transmission delay of the present invention, a reverse-link signal transmitted by a test unit over the hard-wire connection to the base station may arrive at the base station before the start of the base station search window, in which case, the test unit would not be able to initiate or maintain communications with the base station.

  • Patent number: 6285665
Abstract: The power level for uplink data transmission in a wireless communications network utilizing an on-demand multiple access method with a fair queuing service discipline (ODMAFQ) for efficient utilization of the limited bandwidth available in the wireless network is established curing the initial access request message. The power level in a wireless network having a base station and several remote hosts is established by first transmitting a short connection request message to the base station from one of the remote hosts at an initial power level that is set relative to the nominal open loop power level. If the first remote host's transmission is unsuccessful, the power level is incremented by a power increment amount that may be predetermined, and the steps of transmitting and incrementing are repeated until the transmission from remote host to base station is successful.

  • Patent number: 6285761
Abstract: The present invention is a method for outputting larger bit size pseudo-random number zi that is cryptographically secure. Since larger bit size pseudo-random numbers are being outputted, larger bit size segments of messages may be encrypted resulting in a speedier encryption process than encryption processes of the prior art. In one embodiment, the present invention is a pseudo-random number generator defined by a modular exponential function xi=gxi−1 mod p. The output of the pseudo-random number generator being a pseudo-random number zi comprising a j−1 bit size segment of xi. The value of j being less than or equal to m−2c (i.e., j≦m−2c). In an embodiment of the present invention, the pseudo-random number zi includes the j least significant bits of xi excluding the least significant bit of xi.

  • Patent number: 6285863
Abstract: A system and method for providing automatic gain control (AGC) with high dynamic range. An AGC system comprises an open loop control system and a closed loop control system. The open control loop system senses the power level of an input signal and preprocesses the input signal based on its sensed power level. For instance, a strong input signal is attenuated by a fixed level via an analog attenuator, a weak input signal is amplified by a fixed factor via a low noise amplifier, and an intermediate level input signal is directly passed to the closed loop control system of the AGC without any attenuation or amplification. By preprocessing the input signal, the closed loop control system can operate in a range that is optimal for its performance. For instance, a gain variable amplifier of the closed loop control circuit can be prevented from operating in a high attenuation status where its noise figure is very high. A wide band receiver using the AGC system may have a dynamic range over 100 dB.
