  • Patent number: 6075816
Abstract: A blind convergence technique is restricted to using a subset of equalizer output samples. Illustratively, a receiver implements a windowed MMA approach. In this windowed MMA approach, a sample window overlays the two-dimensional plane representing the set of equalizer output samples. • Patent number: 6073476
Abstract: A calibration sample for a particle analyzer comprises a deposition tube containing a known distribution of submicron size particles. The sample is produced using a microwave discharge in a microwave chamber to generate particles from a feedstock gas at subambient pressure, transporting the particles downstream from the microwave chamber and depositing them on the tube. The downstream tubing can then be removed, stored, transported and used as a calibration sample. In subsequent use, gas flowing through the tube entrains particles from the inner wall, producing a particle-laden gas whose particle size distribution and composition are identical to that produced originally--even after storage for months. The sample, requiring no special equipment, can be used at remote sites to prove-in and calibrate particle analyzers.

  • Patent number: 6075629
Abstract: A bi-directional protection facility is provided in an optical communication system in which an optical communications node communicates with another optical communications node via first and second bi-directional communications paths respectively serving as a service path and protection path, and in which a filter at each node processes signals respectively received over the service and protection paths and generates an in-band signal and out-of-band signal for each of the paths. A control unit then generates a Loss of Signal indication for the service path if the level of the out-of-band signal is found to be greater than the level of the in-band signal and protection switching is effectuated as a function of the presence of the control signal. In addition, an outgoing signal to the other communications node is interrupted for a sufficient period of time to cause a LOS at that node and thus trigger protection switching thereat to complete the bi-directional switching process.

  • Patent number: 6075820
Abstract: An IF sampling receiver for use in a wireless communication system includes first and second channels, with one channel generating an in-phase (I) component of an incoming analog IF signal, and the other channel generating a quadrature (Q) component of the analog IF signal. Each of the two channels of the IF sampling receiver includes a corresponding sigma-delta modulator channel. Each of the two sigma-delta modulator channels may be separated into m parallel branches by applying a polyphase decomposition technique to one or more resonators associated with the sigma-delta modulator. The invention thus provides a general framework for configuring a given channel of a sigma-delta modulator to include m parallel branches. The invention also provides a technique for separating a given sigma-delta modulator into n parallel channels, where n is greater than 2. Each of the n parallel channels may then be separated into m parallel branches.

  • Patent number: 6076136
Abstract: A memory access system is provided for accessing a first data unit and a second data unit in a single memory access cycle. The memory access system provides at least a memory, an even address decoding circuit, an odd address decoder, and shift logic. The memory is interleaved by at least one address bus signal into an even memory bank and an odd memory bank. The even memory bank and the odd memory bank are each organized by a plurality of corresponding rows. Each one of the rows contains at least one storage location for a data unit, with one address mapped to one storage location. The even address decoding circuit decodes an address bus signal supplied to the input terminal and activates an output terminal coupled to enable the given row of the even memory bank. The odd address decoder decodes the address bus signal to activate an output terminal coupled to enable the row of the odd memory bank in which the first data unit resides.

  • Patent number: 6075825
Abstract: In an ultra high speed optical communications system, the clock signal from a data stream in NRZ format is recovered using an inexpensive, low Q filter. Resulting clock jitter is reduced with a clock divider which lowers the speed of the signal by 1/n, where n is a an integer. The divided clock signal is filtered again by a low frequency high Q filter. This invention eliminates the need for a costly high frequency high Q filter, while providing a divided down clock for data de-multiplexing. At the lower speed, an inexpensive D flip flop is used with the divided down clock for data recovery.

  • Patent number: 6075427
Abstract: An MCM including a resonator made using conventional MCM fabrication techniques. The MCM's resonator is constructed with overlapping first and second spiral-shaped regions of metallic material separated by a layer of dielectric material. A via disposed in the layer of dielectric material, couples the spiral-shaped regions of metallic material together, thereby utilizing self winding and internal capacitance to gain resonance at frequencies between 500 MHz to 3GHz. The internal capacitance is increased by controlling the overlap between the first and second spiral-shaped regions of metallic material. On a high-resistivity substrate, the monolithic resonator achieves a Q of at least 19 at approximately 900MHz and at least 24 at approximately 2GHz.

  • Patent number: 6075813
Abstract: In a system for simulcasting digitally modulated and analog FM signals over the same FM frequency band, the effect of the analog FM signal on the digitally modulated signal in the simulcast is calculated and canceled from the latter signal before its transmission. As a result, the digital transmission is free from interference from the analog FM signal. Moreover, the digital transmission is achieved by adaptively inserting a time varying number of carriers modulated by digital data into the FM band. The carriers are selected frame by frame to control their interference with the analog FM signal. In accordance with the invention, the carriers are selected in a predetermined order, and in a preferred embodiment grouped contiguously with one another in the FM band. As a result, the rate of control information required to identify the inserted carriers to a receiver is advantageously low.

  • Patent number: 6075785
Abstract: A method and apparatus for accessing data of a telecommunications interface control RAM to meet the two different requirements of the two types of devices accessing the control RAM. Data for output ports are typically aligned such that time-slot 0 for each port leaves the network at the same time. The hardware therefore requests that the control RAM be organized such that the first N locations correspond to time-slot 0 of all output ports, the next N locations to time-slot 1 of all ports, and so on with the final N locations corresponding to the last time-slot of all ports. The software addressing under processor control, on the other hand, uses data structure groups which are a function of the communication ports.

  • Patent number: 6075779
Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention is a method for controlling the number of mobile-telephones transmitting acknowledgments to broadcast short messages (BSM) over a same set of random access channels at a same time. In this embodiment, the transmissions of BSM acknowledgments is controlled by the wireless communication system using random access channel restrictions and random access techniques. Specifically, the random access channel restrictions reduce collisions among acknowledging mobile-telephones and call processing mobile-telephones by allocating one or more specific random access channels over which a BSM acknowledgment can be transmitted, and the random access techniques reduce collisions among acknowledging mobile-telephones by distributing transmissions of the BSM acknowledgments over a period of time.

  • Patent number: 6072809
Abstract: A method is disclosed for maintaining and updating statistical trends of network delay to provide a predictive approach to synchronization. Necessary information, such as timing and stream ID information, is gathered from streams of data and future network delay values are predicted by constructing a measured packet-delay distribution curve. In a preferred embodiment, the inventive system maintains a delay histogram with a discrete set of quantization bins, each storing the relative frequency with which a particular delay value is expected to occur among the arriving packets. The histogram is then used to approximate the distribution in the form of a curve.
