  • Patent number: 6072615
Abstract: Apparatus and method for generating a return-to-zero (RZ) optical data stream. A laser or other continuous wave (CW) optical source generates an optical carrier signal which is applied to a phase modulator. A return-to-zero data generator multiplies a non-return-to-zero (NRZ) electrical data stream and a sinusoidal electrical signal to generate an RZ electrical data stream. The phase modulator modulates the RZ electrical data stream onto the optical carrier signal to generate a phase-modulated optical signal. A Stokes portion or an anti-Stokes portion of the phase-modulated optical signal spectrum is then spectrally separated in an optical filter to provide a corresponding output RZ optical data stream. The spectral separation may be provided using a discrete filter coupled to the output of the phase modulator, or using transmission line filtering in a soliton transmission system.

  • Patent number: 6069732
Abstract: An interferometer having semiconductor optical amplifiers in one or both arms of the interferometer converts information from a first wavelength to another predetermined wavelength. The original data signal (at the first wavelength) is coupled into the interferometer in such a way that it is confined to propagate, either co-directionally or contra-directionally, in only one arm of the interferometer together with the lightwave signal at the predetermined wavelength. This arm includes the semiconductor optical amplifier. In this way, the original data signal is utilized effectively to maximize the interference effect, which is required for wavelength conversion, while minimizing the problems associated with simultaneously saturating amplifiers in the interferometer structure.

  • Patent number: 6069883
Abstract: A code division multiple access system method and apparatus provides for allocation of increased bandwidth to a requesting mobile station. An access controller receives a data burst request (from either a requesting mobile station or from an external network already in connection with the mobile station) requesting a first data rate in excess of the basic data rate B allocated to a mobile station of a first cell. The access controller determines an increased data rate which is to be granted to said mobile station without causing excessive interference at said first cell and at least one adjacent cell and transmits a data burst assignment to a base station of said first cell indicating the increased data rate which has been granted to said mobile station.

  • Patent number: 6070185
Abstract: In a communications arrangement, a computer user accesses a server system to seek customer service over the World Wide Web (WWW). The server system assigns a customer service agent (CSA) to communicate with the user to realize the customer service. In a customer service session, the user and CSA may collaboratively browse hypertext markup language (HTML) documents at different uniform resource locators (URLs) to obtain relevant information. However, in accordance with the invention, the version of each document presented to the user may be different from that presented to the CSA. In particular, the CSA version contains proprietary information which is excluded from the user version.

  • Patent number: 6069881
Abstract: A method and apparatus for reasonably discriminating between an appropriately behaved wireless terminal and an inappropriately behaved wireless terminal is disclosed. In particular, some embodiments of the present invention are capable of reasonably discriminating between an appropriately behaved wireless terminal and an inappropriately behaved wireless terminal even though consecutive frames have heterogeneous rates (i.e., full-rate frames, half-rate frames, quarter-rate frames, etc.).An illustrative embodiment of the present invention receives a frame from a wireless terminal and determines how many "gated-on" groups are in the frame. The illustrative embodiment next determines how many power-down commands should be issued or have been issued to the wireless terminal in response to the received frame. Next, the illustrative embodiment compares the number of power-down commands for the frame to the number of gated-on groups for the frame.

  • Patent number: 6069957
Abstract: An encryption system for restricted-access television systems. Decryption keys, which are used to decrypt program material, are transmitted to customers in a restricted-access television system. The keys are transmitted as a hierarchy, wherein one key unlocks another key, and the last key unlocked is used to decrypt program material. Such a hierarchy is sometimes called "key-upon-key" encryption. The system transmits a second key that produces a first key from a cipher text (which first key decrypts a first program material) and wherein the second key also decrypts a second program material.

  • Patent number: 6069532
Abstract: In a class AB amplifier circuit for use in an integrated circuit (IC) device, a bias circuit is used to bias a first field effect transistor (FET) in an output stage. A second FET in the bias circuit is connected to the first FET. The drain current of the first FET contributes to the output of the amplifier circuit. In response to a difference in inputs to the amplifier circuit in a transient state, the second FET operates in a non-saturation mode especially when the voltage of the power supply to the amplifier circuit is required to be low, e.g., 2 volts. As a result, an input voltage to the first FET which operates in a saturation mode increases, thereby increasing its drain current contributing to the amplifier circuit output. This increased drain current advantageously prevents the otherwise significant distortion in the amplifier circuit output during the transient state.

  • Patent number: 6069807
Abstract: For use with a switched-mode power converter having a modulator that develops a drive signal for a power switch, a compensation circuit, a method of compensating for a change in an output characteristic of the converter and a converter employing the circuit or the method. In one embodiment the compensation circuit includes (1) a sensor that senses the output characteristic and (2) a filter, coupled to the sensor, that develops an intermediate signal representing a change in the output characteristic. The modulator adjusts a switching period of the drive signal as a function of the intermediate signal thereby to decrease a reaction delay of the converter.

  • Patent number: 6067705
Abstract: A multipin header connector pin extraction tool having a resilient tool head with pin grasping fingers resiliently held in spaced, pin receiving relationship for receipt of a contact pin to be extracted is attached to an elongate tool shank slidingly received within an elongate bore within an elongate tool handle. A pair of opposed cam surfaces and a plurality of detent ball bearings held in associated bearing access openings are carried by the handle. A locking collar slideably moves between a nonlocking position and, when the tool shank has been moved to pin grasping position and a detent groove has been aligned with the access openings, a locking position. The detent ball bearings are held in locking engagement with the detent groove after the tool handle has been pushed against the tool head which is held against the header to cam the fingers into grasping relationship with the object pin.

  • Patent number: 6069950
Abstract: A current-limiting circuit (110) of a battery-feed circuit (FIG. 1) for a digital telecommunications line (T,R) provides a low start-up current limit (I3) when power is initially applied to the digital line. It automatically and gradually changes (40) to a high current limit (I1) as the load on the line is charged. When the load is fully charged, the circuit provides a low impedance to the line. Upon occurrence of a fault, the circuit switches back to the initial low current-limit state. The circuit comprises a feed transistor (Q1, Q11), a control transistor (Q2, Q12), and a high-impedance resistive circuit (R1-R4, R15). The feed transistor limits (403) current flowing to the R lead of the line to the high limit when the voltage across the feed transistor is low (0-V2) and the feed transistor is saturated.

  • Patent number: 6070191
Abstract: A server system for processing client requests received over a communication network includes a cluster of N document servers and at least one redirection server. The redirection server receives a client request from the network and redirects it to one of the document servers, based on a set of pre-computed redirection probabilities. Each of the document servers may be an HTTP server that manages a set of documents locally and can service client requests only for the locally-available documents. A set of documents are distributed across the document servers in accordance with a load distribution algorithm which may utilize the access rates of the documents as a metric for distributing the documents across the servers and determining the redirection probabilities. The load distribution algorithm attempts to equalize the sum of the access rates of all the documents stored at a given document server across all of the document servers.
