  • Patent number: 7317686
Abstract: A network node computes a fair share data rate for the sharing of a shared communication channel in a local area network. The network node determines the required information for computing the fair share by snooping the network, by receiving the required information from other network nodes, or a combination of the two techniques. Alternatively, instead of computing the fair share data rate, the network node may receive the fair share data rate which was computed by another network node. The fair share data rate is enforced by the network node in a network protocol stack layer above the media access control layer. In one embodiment, the network protocol stack layer above the media access control layer is the link layer.

  • Publication number: 20080001306
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming an electrically and/or thermally conducting interconnection is disclosed wherein a first surface and a second surface are contacted with each other via a plurality of nanostructures disposed on at least one of the surfaces. In one embodiment, a first plurality of areas of nanostructures is disposed on a component in an electronics package such as, illustratively, a microprocessor. The first plurality of areas is then brought into contact with a corresponding second plurality of areas of nanostructures on a substrate, thus creating a strong friction bond. In another illustrative embodiment, a plurality of nanostructures is disposed on a component, such as a microprocessor, which is then brought into contact with a substrate. Intermolecular forces result in an attraction between the molecules of the nanostructures and the molecules of the substrate, thus creating a bond between the nanostructures and the substrate.

  • Publication number: 20080002190
Abstract: A method for target acquisition and tracking of a moving station or target (e.g., an unmanned aerial vehicle) for carrying out free space optical communications uses an “elapsed time”-based approach to determine the position of the moving station at any future time, based on the time difference since the moving station's last known position. For example, the vehicle may be for purposes of reconnaissance, where the optical link provides a secure and high-bandwidth communications pathway between the moving station and a ground station. A mathematical model of the moving station's expected periodic flight path is combined with position and time elements to accurately predict the future position of the moving station for target re-acquisition. The model is a cubic spline interpolation of known flight path waypoints. The system may also employ multiple waypoints in initial acquisition, by alternating acquisition attempts over several waypoints instead of “staring” at a single waypoint.

  • Patent number: 7315555
Abstract: An IP sub-network includes a gateway and a plurality of sub-network processors in communication with the gateway. An IP address is associated with each sub-network processor, the IP address having a sub-network address portion corresponding to the sub-network and a host address portion corresponding to the sub-network processor. Each sub-network processor generates a transaction identifier for each signaling message that is communicated by the gateway to the signaling network. The transaction identifier is based on the IP address and can be generated by separating the sub-network address portion of the IP address and concatenating the host address portion with a numerical value, which corresponds to a predetermined, non-random ordering scheme. A signaling message can be routed to a sub-network processor by concatenating the sub-network address portion with the host address portion used as part of the transaction identifier.

  • Patent number: 7315699
Abstract: An optical device extracts an information bearing sideband such as an FSK or SCM signal (label) from a composite signal that includes the sideband and an orthogonally modulated signal such as an intensity modulated signal (payload) by splicing the composite signal into a polarization maintaining fiber at a desired angle so that the composite signal is separated into two orthogonal polarizations that experience differential group delay in the fiber. The polarized output signals from the fiber are then coupled to a polarization beam splitter at an equivalent or complementary angle to the desired angle so that one sideband of the composite signal appears at a first output of the beam splitter while another sideband appears at a second output of the beam splitter. The sidebands can then be converted to an electrical data signal by using an appropriate receiver, such as a balanced receiver for FSK signals.

  • Patent number: 7313285
Abstract: Techniques for compressing and decompressing images captured from viewpoints throughout an n-dimensional space. As opposed to conventional approaches, these techniques exploit image coherence over the entire n-dimensional space, providing quick access to images along arbitrary contiguous viewpoint paths during computer graphics applications. This is accomplished by combining a hierarchical data structure with a compression methodology. Such techniques provide for generating and arranging reference images and residual images into a spatial image hierarchy such as a binary tree structure. Images and residuals may be encoded using intra-image compression. A captured image is extracted via a sequence of image warping and addition operations.

  • Patent number: 7313092
Abstract: The present invention is a methodology to prioritize packets based on the conditional probability that given the values of attributes carried by packet, the packet is a legitimate one. We will call this the conditional legitimate probability of a packet from here onward. The conditional probability of each packet is evaluated based on Bayesian estimation technique. This is accomplished by comparing the attributes carried by an incoming packet against the “nominal” distribution of attributes of legitimate packet stream. Since an exact prioritization of packets based on their conditional legitimate probability would require offline, multiple-pass operations, e.g. sorting, we take the following alternative approach to realize an online, one-pass selectively dropping scheme.

  • Patent number: 7312910
Abstract: A new dispersion managed soliton transmission system where the D map period is the same as the amplifier period and the pulse breathing the in the +D sections of the D maps is approximately symmetrical. Pulse breathing symmetry by one or both of two techniques. In one technique a guiding filter is placed at the beginning of the D map period such that the guiding filter reduces the bandwidth of soliton pulses passing through it by a minimum amount. Consequently, pulse breathing symmetry is restored. The path average pulse energy vs. D behavior of solitons propagating through the D map is changed such that (1) solitons of modest bandwidths have adequate energy at or near D=to provide for error-free transmission over transoceanic distances at or near D=0, and (2) such that the path average pulse energy is nearly independent of D, at or near D=0 for solitons of various pulse widths. The transmission system having this D map is much more tolerant of variations in D and pulse width than the prior art.

  • Publication number: 20070291735
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for aligning the transmitters of two or more bidirectional ports of an integrated circuit (IC), particularly an application-specific IC (ASIC) or field-programmable gate array (FPGA). Misalignment of two or more transmitters is determined by the IC itself without the use of external test equipment. Receivers of the bidirectional ports whose transmitters are to be aligned are used by the IC to detect misalignment. Any misalignment of the receivers is also determined and either eliminated or taken into account when aligning the associated transmitters. Variants for ICs with and without internal loop-back capability and for ICs with and without differential outputs are described.
