  • Patent number: 7333457
Abstract: A wireless data communication system includes a high speed dedicated physical control channel (EU-DPCCH) used with transmissions from a mobile device to support an uplink high speed data channel. In one example the EU-DPCCH has a sub frame structure that is the same as an associated dedicated data channel and a fixed spreading factor. The EU-DPCCH allows communicating control information from the mobile device such as a pilot reference, hybrid automatic repeat request information, and backlog information regarding a buffer of the mobile device.

  • Patent number: 7333567
Abstract: A digital detector processes at least one received digital signal to generate a squared signal, encodes the squared signal, applies first and second portions of the encoded signal to a multiplier and a look-up element, respectively, and processes outputs of the multiplier and look-up element to generate a detector output signal representative of a power level of the received digital signal. In an illustrative embodiment, the digital detector is configured so as to exhibit a waveform dependence substantially the same as that of an analog logarithmic amplifier detector. The digital detector and analog logarithmic amplifier detector are utilizable in a closed-loop gain control arrangement for providing a desired gain for a signal path of a base station transmitter in a wireless communication system.

  • Patent number: 7333688
Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for manipulating light beams propagated through PLCs in free space. Light beams propagated in through an input/output waveguide of a PLC are propagated through a waveguide array to generate a phased array output at an edge facet of the PLC. The phased array output at the edge facet is spatially Fourier transformed by a lens in free space, generating a spectrally resolved image at the back focal plane of the lens. The spectrally resolved image is reflected, at least in part, by a reflector device and coupled into a desired waveguide array of a PLC to produce a desired output.

  • Patent number: 7334249
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for dynamically altering a portion of a digital video image based upon a user profile. A source, such as a network feed or video server, sends a digital video image to a broadband network. The broadband network includes a multicast router, a service node, and a broadband access network. The multicast router receives the digital video image and sends it to a video processor. The video processor can be located in the service node or in a subscriber terminal connected to the broadband network. The video processor retrieves a profile associated with a user. The profile includes information pertaining to a desired characteristic relating to the first user. The video processor digitally alters a portion of the digital video image with a replacement digital image based upon the desired characteristic to produce a dynamically altered video image.

  • Patent number: 7333813
Abstract: Mobile devices are assigned to their correct base stations after taking into consideration interference from all other mobile devices. The resulting assignments are more efficient than previous assignments. In addition, transmit power levels are assigned after each mobile device is assigned to a base station. The assigned power levels allow for more efficient use of power during the transmission of data signals.

  • Patent number: 7333553
Abstract: An apparatus and method for tunably delaying a signal and using that delayed signal in a duobinary transmitter is described. The transmitted duobinary signal is representative of the binary signal, and is formed by, among other things, introducing into a copy of the binary signal a delay that may be adjusted to be greater than or less than the bit period of the signal. Once the binary signal has been converted into a duobinary signal, it may then be converted into an optical duobinary signal. Alternatively, the conversion from binary to duobinary in accordance with the invention may be performed in the optical domain.

  • Publication number: 20080037753
Abstract: A call priority management system is implemented on or as part of one or more communication networks, for allowing authorized calling parties to control call disposition when the party being called is already on another call. In operation, when a first terminal initiates communication with a second terminal that is already in communication with a third terminal, the system determines if the newly initiated communication is a priority communication. By “priority” communication, it is meant a communication associated with a user and/or terminal having a designated or assigned privilege to interrupt ongoing communications at the second terminal. If so, the ongoing communication between the second and third terminals is interrupted, and a communication link is established between the first and second terminals. Prior to interruption, the calling party may be informed that the second/called terminal is already engaged in another call, for optionally interrupting the ongoing call.

  • Patent number: 7330699
Abstract: Method for multicasting messages to users of a wireless communication system includes the steps of establishing a power ratio threshold for transmitting the messages, measuring respective power ratios of the users, comparing the established power ratio threshold to the measured power ratios, determining a first subset of the users and a second subset of the users based upon the measured power ratios and delivering the messages to the first subset of the plurality of users via a first transmission scheme. The first transmission scheme delivers the messages to all of the users of the first subset via a broadcast channel. The method also has a step of delivering the messages to the second subset of the users via a second transmission scheme. The second transmission scheme delivers the messages to each of the users of the second subset via respective dedicated channels.

  • Patent number: 7330663
Abstract: A multi-channel (e.g. WDM) receiver, in which l PMD compensators are time-shared by n (n>1) communication channels, where 1?l?n?1. The receiver implements PMD monitoring to identify channels exhibiting relatively high amounts of PMD. Some or all of the identified channels are then subjected, before decoding, to PMD-reduction processing, while the remaining channels are decoded without such processing. Channel allocation for the processing may be changed dynamically depending on the current amounts of PMD exhibited by various channels. Due to efficient utilization of PMD compensators, multi-channel receivers of the invention are capable of performance comparable to that of the corresponding fully compensated (i.e., having a dedicated PMD compensator for each channel) receivers, but at appreciably lower cost.

  • Patent number: 7330717
Abstract: A system and a method for charging for directed provisioning and using of dynamic content to limited resource devices, through an integrated platform which handles all aspects of aggregation and management of such dynamic content. The integrated platform features a billing system for performing billing actions. The billing system of the present invention interacts with other components of the integrated platform in order to be able to determine the charge for particular triggering events, such as downloading dynamic content, and/or events which are actually triggered by the application itself. The charge is preferably determined according to one of a plurality of rules, as applied by a rules engine of the billing system. These rules are part of a charging policy, which may optionally be determined by the content provider.

  • Patent number: 7330462
Abstract: In a packet switch for communicating packet switched data to and from a plurality of wireless mobile stations, a method and apparatus for automatically releasing resources tied up for communicating with dormant mobile stations. If the station has been dormant for a sufficiently long time, an alerting message is sent to the user of that mobile station. The user can then respond by requesting a release of the packet switched data (PSD) call currently connected to that mobile station or can request that the connection remain up. Advantageously, if the user of the station does not respond, then following a timeout the PSD call is released and the resources required for keeping the dormant call in existence are made available for new calls.

  • Patent number: 7330669
Abstract: An optical receiver adapted to apply multiple-sampling processing to an intermediate frequency (IF) signal generated based on heterodyne detection of an optical communication signal. In one embodiment, the receiver has an optical-to-electrical signal converter coupled to a signal decoder adapted to process the IF signal generated by the converter to generate a bit sequence corresponding to the optical communication signal. To generate a bit value, the signal decoder first obtains two or more sample-bit values by sampling the IF signal two or more times per signaling interval. The decoder then applies a logical function to the sample-bit values, which produces the corresponding bit value for the bit sequence. Due to the multiple-sampling processing, a receiver of the invention does not require the time-consuming fine wavelength tuning of its local oscillator, which advantageously reduces the channel switching time achieved in the receiver compared to that in prior-art heterodyne receivers.
